Practice education is an integral core element of the curriculum ena$ling you to integrate theory and practice in a meaningful< reflecti+e and realistic manner. =ou will ha+e opportunities to apply< practice< consolidate and transfer e6isting s*ills and< in addition< learn new s*ills rele+ant to each practice setting. =ou will also gain e6perience in practicing in a safe and ethical manner. The placement module has a set of learning outcomes pre&determined $y %)C. 'earning outcomes articulate with prior and future academic studies in the programme< encouraging e6ploration and e+aluation of practice< enhancing learning and transfer of *nowledge s*ills and instilling essential professional +alues. Throughout practice education the integration of *nowledge and practice forms the *eystone of continuing professional de+elopment through meaningful and reflecti+e learning. Integration is facilitated $y7 articulation of %)C $ased modules with the practice placement preparation of students prior to each placement de$riefing of students following each practice placement strong communication lin*s $etween %)C and practice placement pro+iders preparation of practice educators through inductions< presentations and wor*shops. discussions and meetings with indi+idual or groups of practice educators )oodle discussion areas use of learning agreements on all practice placements use of self e+aluation reports instruction on portfolio&$uilding 0tudent representati+es< placement pro+iders and practice educators are +alued mem$ers of programme planning teams and their contri$utions gi+e useful insights into effecti+e and practical ways of facilitating the em$edding of *nowledge within practice. P*rp&se &% the Pl$(e'ent The aim of the placement is to pro+ide you with practical e6perience rele+ant to your programme. "a+ing the chance to o$ser+e and participate in media and communication related wor* in an organisation or studio may also pro+ide you with a rele+ant career choice. Ti'in+ The placement is scheduled to last si6 wor*ing wee*s although you and your placement host may arrange further employment if you so wish. =ou may underta*e the placement anytime from November 2012 for the 3ilm -irecting strand and from March 2013 for the >ournalism strand. The placement can either $e run on 2 days per wee* $asis for 2 months. ;ltimately< the timing of each placement will $e a mutual decision made $y you and the host in con?unction with the placement coordinator.

This is someone for you to discuss issues< concerns< wor*loads or responsi$ilities with. %ny pro$lems on placement< which cannot $e resol+ed $y the host organisation< should $e referred< as soon as possi$le< to )agda #emoundou< Placement Coordinator @see contact details $elowA. It would $e useful to set up a meeting with your pl$(e'ent e)*($t&r in the organisation $efore or at the $eginning of the placement to discuss a programme of acti+ities. =ou need to $e enthusiastic and $e willing to ta*e on tas*s and challenges and complete them to the $est of your a$ility. If you are not clear a$out what is re2uired of you B %09. The importance of punctuality< attenti+eness and willingness to help cannot $e stressed strongly enough. =ou are encouraged to ta*e the opportunity to gain e6perience to ma*e a good impression to en?oy your placement. 3# Resp&nsi2ilities )*rin+ pr$(ti(e e)*($ti&n This section outlines the roles and responsi$ilities of the +arious indi+iduals in+ol+ed in practice education. These are practice educator< student< personal academic tutor< and the practice placement co&ordinator. Resp&nsi2ilities &% the pr$(ti(e e)*($t&r Practice educators play a *ey role in the professional de+elopment of )ass Communication and )edia %rts students. Their duties are7 CTo o$tain information on the %)C5s e6pectations for the specific practice placement< course assessment re2uirements and regulations for practice education from the Placement Coordinator. CTo forward pre&placement information to you in ad+ance of the start of the placement. This includes an o+er+iew of the host organiDation< clear directions and tra+el information< recommended pre&placement reading and any other information considered helpful. CTo offer you an induction into health and safety at wor* at the start of the placement.

CTo pro+ide a timeta$le outlining the o+erall structure of the placement and your responsi$ilities. CTo negotiate a super+ision structure with you incorporating the learning agreement as part of this process. CTo offer indi+idualised constructi+e feed$ac* to you on a regular $asis. CTo pro+ide the appropriate information to the placement coordinator towards your proper assessment< according to the guidelines pro+ided $y %)C. CTo contact your placement coordinator immediately< if there are concerns pertaining to your well&$eing< $eha+iour or 2uality of performance. Resp&nsi2ilities &% the Pers&n$l A($)e'i( T*t&r The personal academic tutor @P%TA is a lecturer from the programme team who acts as a named point of contact for you and your practice educator during your practice placement. Their duties are7 CTo offer support throughout the placement< responding to re2uests for ad+ice and information from you and your practice educator< offering pastoral support and guidance as re2uired. CTo moderate the student on&line discussion area in %)C )oodle. CTo arrange a three way meeting $etween the practice educator< you and the practice coordinator if there is a serious concern re2uiring to $e addressed. CTo liaise with the practice coordinator if concerns arise a$out your performance during a professional practice placement. Resp&nsi2ilities &% the st*)ent =ou will wor* closely with their practice educators during practice placements. It is ac*nowledged that practice educators5 first responsi$ilities is to ser+ice users and that in addition to facilitating students learning they ha+e many additional responsi$ilities to deal with on a day to day $asis. Gi+ing consideration and thought to practice educators5 needs and responsi$ilities should ena$le you to esta$lish a good colla$orati+e wor*ing relationship. =ou will ha+e7 To assume responsi$ility for your learning using a+aila$le resources. To discuss any planned a$sence with the placement coordinator in $)v$n(e of the start date of the placement. Planned a$sence from placement will $e allowed only in e6ceptional circumstances. To attend and participate in all preparatory placement acti+ities on the appointed dates specified $y the %)C. To study and $ecome con+ersant with the %)C5s e6pectations< assessment re2uirements and ethical regulations for your practice placement. To read any pre&placement information materials pro+ided or recommended $y the practice educator. To a$ide at all times $y all health and safety at wor* issues and $e cognisant of policies and procedures specific to the placement location. To $e responsi$le for any tra+elling and accommodation costs incurred to and from placement. To $e punctual at all times and dressed appropriately as $efitting for the placement setting and the wor* in+ol+ed. To reflect the status of a team mem$er and respectfully engage with other mem$ers of staff at the placement setting as appropriate.

To inform the practice coordinator in ad+ance if a contingency arises that does not allow you to attend placement on a particular day. To prepare three self e+aluation reports in accordance with the guidelines pro+ided $y %)C. To collect materials towards the enrichment of your portfolio< always adhering to the regulations of the placement location. To $e fully prepared for super+ision sessions and contri$ute to the super+ision process in a reflecti+e manner. To contri$ute towards and acti+ely participate in the e+aluation of performance displaying openness to and ac*nowledgement of other people5s ideas. To contact the placement coordinator and %)C< if there are factors ad+ersely affecting performance during practice placement. To return copies of student self e+aluation reports to the placement coordinator within , wor*ing days of completion of placement.

Resp&nsi2ilities &% the pl$(e'ent (&3&r)in$t&r The placement co&ordinator @PCA at %)C ta*es the lead in practice placement. 0Ehe is responsi$le for the de+elopment and re+iew of practice education through planning and co& ordination of practice placements for )ass Communication and )edia %rts students within the +arious professional placements< esta$lishing ro$ust communication networ*s with placement educators and practical placement locations @P'A. 0Ehe has7

To *eep accurate records of practice placements pro+ided and to createEmaintain a data$ase of practice educators. To colla$orate with %)C5s administration to identify new placement opportunities. To liaise with managers to monitor and increase a+aila$ility of practice placements. To *eep up&to&date with current practices in education. To negotiate practice placements with rele+ant esta$lishments and practice educators on an annual $asis and ensure that there are contingency mechanisms for late changes. To colla$orate with placement pro+iders to comply with practice education guidance and standards pro+ided $y :); and %)C. To co&ordinate %)C5s contact mechanisms for students and practice educators during practice placements. To ensure that students are ready for placement in that they recei+e the re2uired information< paperwor* and preparation prior to the commencement of the placement< including an up&to&date placement 0tudent Guide. To colla$orate with you in de+ising a learning agreement for practice placement. To discuss with you any issues or circumstances that may impact on the placement @such as the need for %d?ustments on the grounds of disa$ilityA and agree on how this will $e shared. If you do not wish to disclose information it is important that you understand the implications of this decision and sign a disclaimer. To pro+ide the practice educator with rele+ant information that may impact on the deli+ery and management of the practice placement learning e6perience e.g. learning contract< religious o$ser+ance needs etc. Information disclosed should $e agreed $eforehand with the student. To prepare you for your roles and responsi$ilities during practice education. To inform you on health< safety< confidentiality and other regulations in the P's. To *eep in contact with students and practice educators throughout practice placements and assessments pro+iding guidance and counsellingEconciliation as re2uired. To $ring to the attention of the %)C< as soon as possi$le< potential difficulties arising which may result in the cancellation of a placement.

To co&ordinate and ensure the completion of all re2uired tas*s and reports during practice placements. To monitor and e+aluate placements with practice educators. To ensure staff acting in their capacity as practice educators ha+e ade2uate training and demonstrate ongoing commitment to their professional role. To offer support to practice educators ta*ing into account the time and resources necessary for student super+ision. To ta*e cognisance of comments made in your self e+aluation reports and to use this as an integral part of a constructi+e e+aluation process. To re+iew your progress and placement grade as assessed and recommended $y practice educators. To +isit you at P's on regular $asis at times mutually con+enient to all parties. To organise and deli+er the post&placement tutorials. To attend and participate in meetings< wor*shops and other e+ents associated with practice education.

Le$rnin+ $+ree'ent =our o$?ecti+es for the placement should $e agreed $etween you and the host organisation $efore your Placement $eginsF ideally< during the meeting with your practice educator< at which host re2uirements and your s*ills and e6perience should $e discussed. This will ena$le you to focus on aspects of practice in which you wish to gain more e6perience and help you to capitalise upon learning opportunities specific to each practice setting. 0uch learning agreements foster the integration of theory and practice through their emphasis upon prior learning and e6ploration of the process and outcome of learning. 0tudents negotiate and fulfil the learning o$?ecti+es and are acti+e partners in their own learning process. Conse2uently< there is shared responsi$ility for the outcome of the learning e6perience as students wor* in partnership with their practice educator@sA to try to secure a successful outcome. )ore importantly< o$?ecti+es set should re2uire you to interface with a wide range of indi+iduals on a num$er of tas*s or pro?ects. 0tudents and host organisations $oth get more out of this type of arrangement than if you are confined to a limited num$er of tas*s wor*ing mainly on your own. =ou should also ha+e the opportunity to put into practice some of the *nowledge you ha+e attained on the course as well as pic*ing up practical +ocational *nowledge. 4# Prep$rin+ st*)ents %&r pr$(ti(e pl$(e'ents %pproaches to your preparation for placement are $lended within this programme to allow fle6i$ility of deli+ery and to accommodate your different learning styles. These include interacti+e wor*shops< group wor*< personal de+elopment planning< self Be+aluation acti+ities< directed reading and e&learning. 9ey aspects of the preparation process will now $e descri$ed in more detail $elow. M&&)le Practice placement modules are supported $y %)C5s +irtual learning en+ironment )oodle. This pro+ides a useful platform for the implementation of a phased approach to placement preparation. In addition each )oodle module area houses a $an* of information resources and materials including useful we$ lin*s< discussion areas< sources of accommodation< hand$oo*s< assessment forms< templates for reflection and reading materials.

-&r4sh&ps Interacti+e wor*shopsE tutorials facilitated $y the practice coordinator ena$le you to prepare for the practice placement. They focus upon topics salient to the practice placement such as7 re+iew of the aims for your placement and e6ploration of how these will facilitate the integration of theory and practice professional conduct during practice placements learning cycle and learning stylesEpreferences preparation for and re+iew of self e+aluation on placements de+eloping and using learning agreements on the practice placement de+eloping and using a professional portfolio Ethi($l Iss*es 0tudents recei+e education and training upon a range of issues such as7 0afe guarding +ulnera$le adults Confidentiality ad+erse physical or psychological reactions addressing sensiti+e topic areas These topics are compulsory elements of the curriculum and are treated prior to the practice placement. 0tudents are also assisted in completing rele+ant ethical issues paperwor* when appropriate. In)ivi)*$l s*pp&rt 0tudents5 personal academic tutors and the practice coordinator are $oth a+aila$le +ia e&mail andEor telephone to answer any 2ueries throughout practice placements @see pg 13A. The practice coordinator also carries out +isits to placement sites at the re2uest of practice educators andEor students. 5# D&(*'ent$ti&n =ou are re2uired to su$mit +arious documentsEcertificates in preparation for progression to your placement. =ou will present this e+idence to your practice coordinator during the induction phase of placement. C&p/ &% Cri'in$l Re(&r) 0ince you will $e interacting with e6ternal groups< you must pro+ide a copy of your Criminal #ecord @the e2ui+alent of the 0cottish Protection of Gulnera$le Groups %ctA. %ll students ha+e to su$mit their criminal record document< which is issued e6clusi+ely $y the Gree* ?udicial authorities< prior their registration at the $eginning of each academic year. Placement pro+iders may re2uire additional chec*s $efore accepting students on placements. Dress C&)e % placement pro+ider may re2uire a particular dress code. =ou will $e informed on it $y your Placement Coordinator and at your induction at the placement. 6# -&r4 Pr&+r$''e We recommend to placement pro+iders that they draw up a timeta$le of acti+ities for you. We do< howe+er< stress to them that we< and our students< appreciate the need for a fle6i$le and adapta$le approach. They are also aware that %)C is happy to discuss a suita$le programme of acti+ities with the host organisation if appropriate.

Placement wor* can ta*e a num$er of forms. =ou may $e as*ed to co+er a role while the mem$er of staff is on lea+e. =ou may $e gi+en a specific pro?ect to complete. %lternati+ely you may $e as*ed to help out on a range of pro?ects or acti+ities. =ou may also ?o$ shadow. =our placement will in+ol+e time spent shadowing indi+iduals in the host organisation< accompanying staff to meetings< o$ser+ing and discussing daily staff routines. It will also pro+ide hands&on e6perience of what it is li*e to wor* in a P#Ecommunications department or consultancy. =ou may $e re2uired to do some administrati+e tas*s< $ut also need to as* if you can write releases< Hsell stories5 to ?ournalists< write copy for leaflets and newsletters< $uild a digital presence online< help organise e+ents etc. #egarding the 3ilm -irecting students< the range of tas*s may include wor*ing as Production %ssistants< %ssistants of the Prop )aster< 0cript 0uper+isors @Continuity PersonsA in a film shooting< selecting shots in the postproductionEediting process< communicating with the production crew and the actors< e.t.c. Pl$(e'ent P&rt%&li& =our placement pro+ides an e6cellent opportunity to practice professional s*ills e.g writing press releasesF copies of all your wor* should $e retained to get included into portfolios that will assist you at inter+iews for ?o$s after graduation. )oreo+er< the super+isors pro+ide a certificate of attendance to the students who were interns in their wor*spaces< referring to the tas*s that they carried out and their general progress within a real life wor* en+ironment. Please note however that you must have permission to take any copies or originals from host organisations even if it is all your own work ! as it remains the property of the host and could be competitor sensitive. The use of portfolios gi+es students opportunities to e+idence and reflect on their learning. This process prepares students for using portfolios to e+idence their continuing professional de+elopment after completion of their studies. 7# St$n)$r)s $n) Res&*r(es We as* the host organisation to clarify issues of confidentiality< dress code< wor*ing hours< sic*ness procedures etc with you in ad+ance of you ?oining them< either during a meeting or +ia e&mail or letter. 0tudents on placement will $e e6pected to adhere to the host organisation5s health and safety procedures. We also as* the host organisation to allocate a personal wor*space dedicated to each of the interns< within the organisation< allowing for some degree of integration. 8# Ass*rin+ the 8*$lit/ &% pr$(ti(e pl$(e'ents % +ariety of systems and mechanisms are currently in operation $y %)C as de+eloped $y :); to ensure that the 2uality of practice education is monitored and re+iewed there$y contri$uting towards enhancement of the placement e6perience.

%ll potential placement sites are +isited $y the practice coordinator. Initial +isits will in+ol+e discussions with the -irector of %)C and the Programme 'eader to consider the feasi$ility of locating students in the organisation for practice placements. The range of issues to $e e6plored and discussed will include7 #oles and responsi$ilities of all sta*eholders B College< students and placement pro+idersF "ealth< safety and insurance issuesF E2ual opportunitiesE anti&discriminatory policies and how these might $e applied to practice educationF 0uita$ility of the location for studentsF 0taffing le+elsF 0taff e6pertise including e6perience of student super+ision and attending practice educators5 coursesF #esources a+aila$le for students including li$rary< accommodation< transport< technology< access to internet< study space< etcF

The o+erall structure of the curriculum and the support a+aila$le from the %)C is also to $e discussed. Ince the -irector of %)C< Programme 'eader and the Practise Placement Coordinator are $oth satisfied that the organisation has the potential to support student placements< a further meeting will $e arranged to gi+e all staff the opportunity of discussing the matter further. %t the meeting< the PPC presents information a$out7 #oles and responsi$ilities I+erall structure of the curriculum and its educational philosophy 8rief resume of content of each programme module %ims of the practice placement Contact mechanisms with the College $efore< during and after placements

Ither internal 2uality assurance mechanisms include7 0taff andEor students with legitimate concerns a$out a practice placement $ring the matter to the attention of the College PPC. The PPC will e6plore the issues raised in partnership with the placement site. The PPC may then facilitate or ad+ise upon appropriate strategies for assessment andEor learning opportunities for e6ample< resetting of specific o$?ecti+es. 0hould concernsEissues remain unresol+ed< the placement may $e withdrawn temporarily or permanently from the potential pool of practice placements. Practice education is routinely discussed at the programme and student staff consultati+e committees.

9# "in$n(i$l Arr$n+e'ent =ou will ?oin a host organisation for a placement period. Jo payment will $e e6pected from the host during the period of internship< although e6penses are always welcome and appreciated. If you and your host organisation agree that you will wor* for more than the scheduled period< you should $e remunerated for the e6tra time. =ou and your host organisation should negotiate the remuneration independently of %)C. 1:# Ins*r$n(e &% St*)ents &n Pl$(e'ent

0tudents on placement are fully co+ered $y %)C5s lia$ility insurance. 11# 1&sts "osts +ary from year to year and include P# consultancies and in&house communication departments< 3ilm K TG production companies< pri+ate K national TG channels we$ channels< we$ magaDines K papers< radio stations K we$ radio stations. Irganisations participating in our placement scheme come $oth from the pri+ate and pu$lic sectors. In the decade long realisation of the programme< a networ* of super+isors has $een esta$lishedF colla$oration with them is on a recurrent $asis and each year students are as*ed to fill their intern posts. )any of the 8% in )ass Communication and )edia %rts graduates ha+e $ecome employed in the wor*spaces of their internship. Ensure that you gi+e due consideration to the type of host employer that you would li*e to undergo your placement with prior to the placement networ*ing e+ent. =ou will $e gi+en information in ad+ance of the e+ent detailing which employers will participate. =ou would $e ad+ised to carry out some research on those of interest. The employers& practice educator attend seminars at %)C conducted $y the module co& ordinator on the educational process. Practice educators will ha+e to super+ise the presence of the students in the practice locations< as well as the assessment and mar*ing process. In se+eral occasions the practice educator is already a tutor in the programme or an educator in the two year programme of the IGT< and therefore possesses teaching e6perience< is familiar with the students and colla$orates with %9)I Educational Irganisation. S*pp&rtin+ st*)ents )*rin+ pr$(ti(e e)*($ti&n The programme team is committed to the learning e6perience of the student $eing one that facilitates an acti+e and interacti+e process promoting intellectual autonomy. The +alue of di+ersity that indi+iduals as adult learners $ring to the programme is recognised. %ttention is paid to the s*ills of the students ac2uired within practice education that foster their a$ilities to $e self& directed learners. )oodle pro+ides a forum for group discussion and communication to facilitate sharing throughout the learning e6perience. %t designated points throughout the placement students participate in on&line discussions< which are moderated $y their personal academic tutors. Guidance on preparation for and participation in these on&line discussions is pro+ided to students during preparatory sessions held at the College. 9nowledge sharing amongst the on& line community is acti+ely encouraged $y the coordinator through the use of peer&generated feed$ac*. % Practice placement de$riefing wor*shop is normally held following the placement offering you a further opportunity to integrate the e6perience of practice placement conte6t with the %)C learning en+ironment. Within this wor*shop< students will $e encouraged to re+iew their personal and professional de+elopment with the professional practice coordinator< discuss rele+ant issues and prepare for future practice placements.

If your performance is causing concern on any practice placement< a +isit can $e arranged. % student may $e +isited on more than one occasion. 1,# Assess'ent &% st*)ents; per%&r'$n(e )*rin+ pr$(ti(e e)*($ti&n =ou are assessed on your practice placement $y the practice coordinator in colla$oration with yourself and< if appropriate< other departmental staff. The process of assessment is ongoing throughout the placement and in+ol+es $oth the practice coordinator and you in e+aluating performance< using e+idence from your practice. This process of self&assessment contri$utes towards the de+elopment of your professional ?udgment. There are three self&e+aluation report forms to $e completed one for each stage of your practice placement< reflecting the learning outcomes for the placement and e6pectations for professional de+elopment and practice. The assessment forms focus on fi+e areas of *nowledge< s*ills and attitudes appropriate to each stage of professional de+elopment. The assessment of the student is conducted $y the practice educator and the module coordinator and the final mar* is agreed upon $y $oth educators.
