In 1984, the UN General Assembly put forward the Declaration on the Right of Peoples to Peace, which was non-binding, and later a binding treaty (the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons) was formed that obliged all signatory nations to cease production of nuclear weapons and disarm any already made, in an effort to prevent nuclear war. Wars still break out regardless of the UNs various peace-related declarations and treaties, however, a number have been ended because the UN Security Council has stepped in to keep the peace.
