DEPARTMENT OF ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY

Course Number & Title: Construction Estimating & Design Analysis Using BIM Course Author(s): Todd A. Baxter Author Affiliation: C.W. Driver Phone: 909.222.9135 E-Mail: tbaxter.ucla@gmail.com

COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION:

This course will provide an overview of construction cost estimating and design analysis using the latest BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology, which is rapidly transforming the way buildings are designed, estimated, and constructed. Students will receive hands-on training with cutting-edge BIM estimating products including Autodesk Revit, Autodesk QTO, Autodesk Navisworks, and Sage-Timberline Estimating as they estimate and analyze a number of projects built in Southern California. This course is intended for project managers, architects, designers, engineers and contractors seeking to maximize their professional potential in the fast growing field of BIM technology in construction.

PREREQUISITE(S):
*Revit Architecture I (Recommended) *Introduction to Building Information Modeling (Recommended) *Fundamentals of Construction Costs and Estimating (Recommended)

COURSE MAJOR TOPICS:

INTRODUCTION:
Estimating & design analysis through BIM are of most worth to a project during the early phases of design and construction (Lean Construction Institute, 2013). Furthermore, an owners decision to build, a designers capacity to design, and a construction companys ability to control costs is based on the accuracy of its cost estimate. This class is designed to help the student gain knowledge and experience in construction estimating and design analysis by understanding the dynamic process of extracting resource quantities from the BIM models and analyzing the impacts of the variance between estimates. This course will begin with an introduction to estimating and the fundamental practices that are currently being used throughout the industry. By week 3, the course will transition into hands-on lab time where each student will have the opportunity to learn how to extract quantities for estimating and analytical evaluations using Revit Architecture and Navisworks Manage. Sage-Timberline will also be discussed and demonstrated to help bring everything together in a structured database. Each student comes to this class with a varying level of understanding, experience, and perspective within the AEC industry. Those who have previously been involved in estimating know that is not just a science, but an art, which requires experience. Of course, one of the hardest things to teach is experience--and in many cases this is impossible. An instructor can relate experiences, but no amount of lecturing really teaches experience. The assignments, which you will be given in this class, are designed to GIVE you experience in construction estimating so that the student can understand the process. The assignments are designed to be challenging

COURSE GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The objective of this course is to give students a thorough understanding of the estimating process and demonstrate the methods of quantity take-offs and design analysis using the tools of BIM. Students will gain an appreciation for the importance of accuracy, organization, and attention to detail. Specific objectives are: 1. To develop the ability to perform and document quantity surveys accurately by applying standard estimating techniques using Revit Architecture & Navisworks Manage. 2. To develop the ability to manipulate a model to extract the proper parametric properties. 3. To develop the ability to analyze model variances and price them accurately and quickly. 4. To introduce and apply computerized spreadsheet applications to estimating. 5. To introduce and demonstrate the use of an estimating database.

SOFTWARE, LAB ACCESS, OTHER MATERIALS:

1. Each student will be required to have his or her own data storage. 2. This course requires the use of the software in Room 213. Student Versions of the Autodesk Software may be downloadable after the first week of class.

COURSE PREPARATION AND GUIDELINES:

1. Be sure to do your work on time. Late assignments will be penalized 20% per day late. It is recognized that events arise from time to time which are beyond a students control; however, notice PRIOR TO DUE DATES is required to avoid late penalties. 2. Assignments will be graded for accuracy, completeness, organization and professionalism. A good portion of professionalism is presentation. Assignments are to be presented in digital format. Exceptions will be noted by the instructor.

HOMEWORK & CLASS PARTICIPATION:

Reading assignments are to be completed prior to class. Homework assignments will be collected at the beginning of class. You will be expected to participate in class and be a part of the discussions.

EXAMS & QUIZZES:

Exams and quizzes will be given throughout the quarter. If you are unable to attend on the day of an exam, you must make arrangements ahead of time to take the exam at another time.

POLICIES:
Estimating is often done on a team basis where members of the team divide up an estimate and each person completes a specified portion. The individual estimates are then compiled to come up with the final bid. Because most of you have not had the opportunity to be involved in estimating the various phases of construction, each student in this class is expected to do his or her own work. It is permissible to work together, to help each other figure out how certain aspects of the project come together and to navigate the software. However, each student should find the answers independently and all work should be compiled, organized and presented independently.

HONOR & INTEGRITY:

It should be obvious that of all characteristics, personal integrity ranks among the highest, and may be, the most important. Almost every day AEC professionals are confronted with decisions that challenge their honesty and integrity. It is expected that each student has decided to exhibit honor and integrity in pursuing a career in the AEC industry.
