Brian Mears Mod 4 Farm to Table Aquaponics and Hydroponics What is Hydroponics?

Hydroponics is the act of growing plants in water. More specifically it involves adding minerals and nutrients with the use of a medium that allows the roots to hold on to anything. The medium can be thick or porous depending on what you want from your hydroponics system. How does it work? Ions and nutrients in the water are absorbed by the plant basically making soil an unneeded additive. Types of Hydroponics Static, Rotary, Fogponics, Bubbleponics, Deep water Culture, Continuous flow, Aeroponics, Passive Subirrigation, Ebb and flow, Run to waste. Aquaponics What is aquaponics? Aquaponics combines aqua culture and hydroponics. Aquaculture is the growing of aquatic animals.

Tilapia, blue gill/brim, sunfish, koi, fancy goldfish, pacu, various ornamental fish such as angelfish, guppies, tetras, swordfish, mollies, carp, barramundi, silver perch, golden perch, yellow perch, Catfish, Large mouth Bass
Aquatic animals excrete waste, ammonia is turned into nitrate to feed plants. Symbiotic relationship. Requires fish tank, a basin for waste, a filter to rid the system of bacteria and to change ammonia to nitrate. 10 Guidelines See presentation Pros and Cons of Aquaponics Pros and Cons of Hydroponics Which ones better? Hydroponics is better for small growth due to the ability to control the system with chemicals and additives. Aquaponics allows for less chemical use but requires the need to care for the fish as well. Aquaponics in my opinion Is better due to the ability to produce more in a more organic symbiotic fashion.
