A Changing Nation

Mr. Short 12th Grade/History

Common Core Standards: 1. The rise of corporations, heavy industry, mechanized farming and technological innovations transformed the American economy from an agrarian to an increasingly urban industrial society. 2. Immigration, internal migration and urbanization transformed American life. 3. The Progressive era was an effort to address the ills of American society stemming from industrial capitalism, urbanization and political corruption. Lesson Summary: In this lesson students will learn to understand how industrialization, urbanization, and immigration shaped the country into what it is today. Students will study the industrialist Vanderbilt, Carnagee, Rockefeller, Ford, and Morgan to learn their areas of industry. Compare and contrast the different types of industry using video clips from the time period. Discuss the innovations that come about during industrialization and how those innovations are interconnected with one another. Example: the elevator could not have been invented without the innovation of skyscrapers. Skyscrapers could not have been invented if not for the Bessemer process to mass produce steel. After the students understand these ideas, I will then lead a guided discussion on what modern innovations are connected with each other. Estimated Duration: The lesson will take up to 200 minutes to complete and will be separated into 50 minute intervals over 4 class days.

Commentary: To kick the lesson off I will go over the basics of Capitalism and what elements are needed for country to industrialize. Then I will I ask what forms of technology the students use on a daily bases that resulted from industrialization. Then I will show the students video clips of how goods were manufactured before and after Fords assembly line, after which, I will lead a guided discussion on the pros and cons of each. The big problem I for see with this lesson plan is that this area of American history is a touchy subject for most people. People are too quick to choose sides when discussing industrialization, thus the lesson will be lost. I plan to combat this by explaining the mentality students must have when looking at history. This is commonly known as the historians mentality where they must hold an objective view of the material, and not a bias one.

Instructional Procedures: Day 1: For the first day of this lesson, I will make an introduction to the industrial revolution and what elements are

needed to for a country to industrialize. The seven elements for industrialization are as follows: vast and varied resources, new inventions and technology, interconnected transport system, lack of government controls, capitalist/industrialist, skilled labor, and unskilled labor. This will be the first part of the lecture and will be assisted by a PowerPoint presentation. Students will be able to follow along and look back at the slides through the use of the school website where the lecture slides will be available at all times. This lecture will take up most of the available class time, but is necessary as an intro into the rest of the section. The last fifteen minutes of the class will be for the students to pick a name off a list provided by me. On this list are people who played a significant role during the industrial revolution. Enough names will be provided so everybody will have his or her own person. Once everyone has a person, each student will then be required to create a Facebook page for that person. This is to be completed that night as homework and will be added to throughout the week. After making the Facebook page they are to friend request my class page by 10pm that night to receive full credit. This Facebook page is to be as detailed as possible requiring the student to do their own research on his or her person. Birthdates, occupation, city of residence, must all be accurate. Throughout the week students will add onto this pages leaving as if they really were that person. These comments are to be well typed and thought out. Examples will be provided to get the students imagination flowing. Day 2: For this class period we will be going over technological innovations and mechanization. Before the lecture begins, I will lead a class discussion on current technology. This is to get the students to start thinking critically before the lecture starts. I will ask a set of questions to the class to get the ball rolling. For example: What technology do you use in your day to day lives? After I get enough participation, I will begin how this technology interconnects. For example a student answers smartphone. As a class we will thin discuss what other innovations made the smartphone possible. This part of class will not go over fifteen minutes. The rest of class time is for the lecture. Again this will be assisted by a PowerPoint which will include video clips of industrial age machinery. There will be two clips that are especially important. One will be of the cottage assembly method, and the other will be of the assembly line method. This will be the homework for the night. Students are required to write a two column paper comparing and contrasting the two. Also the students are to work on the Facebook pages adding entries as well. Day 3: This class period will focus on urbanization and immigration. This lecture will include the difference between the new and old immigrants. We will discuss why the new immigrants of the time were so discriminated against during the time. This will also focus on why the new immigrants were mostly restricted to the unskilled labor force. Also this lecture will cover the migration of people from rural areas to urban areas, also known as internal migration. To give the students a visual image, the PowerPoint will include Jakobe Reese photos of tenement living. This will then lead into the next guided discussion on why the migration from rural to urban areas happened. This will take the last ten minutes of class time. The nights assignment will be for the students to add on to their Facebook pages and each student is to pick a Jakobe Reese photo and write two paragraphs on what they see. Day 4: This lecture will focus on progressivism and labor unions. This will cover the reforms of President Theodor Roosevelt and other progressive politicians of the time. Labor unions will be discussed in depth as well. The focus for labor unions will be the difference between the AFL (skilled) and the unskilled labor unions. The

nights assignment will be the last entries on the Facebook pages.

Pre-Assessment: I will lead a class question and answer portion before the start of the first lecture. This is to get a feel for what the students may or may not know. Also I will use this time to debunk any common myths of the subject that may arise. Scoring Guidelines: This will be purely teacher judgment. Post-Assessment: The Facebook pages will be graded after the end of the section and will act as the post assessment. Scoring Guidelines: The Facebook pages will need be graded as such: 25% for all entries with a 5% deduction for all late entries 50% for accurate and detailed information 15% for creativity 10% for proper punctuation, grammar, organization, etc. (I understand its a Facebook page where usually these things dont apply, but it is still a school assignment.)

Differentiated Instructional Support To meet the needs of individual students, I will make myself available for one on one counseling. Any questions about the Facebook project or other assignments can be asked at any time via face to face or email. Students who seem to be doing well will be assigned to help others who may be struggling with the lesson.

Homework Options and Home Connections The Facebook page will be the big assignment for the lesson. This will give the students a chance to think like his or her person. This will provide the student with a better idea of the time period. A two paragraph description of a Jacob Reese photo. A two column paper discussing the differences between cottage and assembly line methods.

Interdisciplinary Connections Throughout the lesson I will be going over some literature of the time period. American Literature I will cover the art styles that emerged from the time period because of the need for better advertisement Art Materials and Resources:
