READING RESPONSE PAPER Reading Response Paper: The Limits of Technology In the article The Limits of Technology John Clayton and Stephen J. Macdonald, focus on technology and its relationship with social inclusion as well as its impact on socio-economics and class positions (Clayton & Macdonald, 2012). In discussing social inclusion and its relevance to technology, a small and destitute city in the UK, is brought to attention. The article examines the socially excluded neighbourhood of Sunderland. The cities past struggles of economic decline and high unemployment make for a suitable choice in the articles investigation. The article

explores the marginalized social groups within Sunderland and the digital divide (Clayton & Macdonald, 2012) among its individuals. The article attempts to draw a connection between an individuals access to technology, such as the Internet, to their social ranking, financial well-being, education and career opportunities. Clayton and Macdonald discover that people of lower occupational groups have less knowledge and less access to the Internet, which can be contributed to their level of income. In addition, the Internet has a much larger influence on people of higher income in terms of their educational achievement and employment more so then the latter. This article argues that Internet is a key determinant in obtaining an education as well as a career. Although if an individual is proactive and is motivated in achieving their career aspirations, having access to technology such as the Internet is not the determining factor in their success. If an individual has the determination to excel in their education or career goals they have the same abilities as those who have access to the Internet just different resources. A individual who is able to go online and have the ability to access numerous job and education opportunities is just as likely to prosper as a person who

doesnt have the same resources but is able to access the same information through means of other advertising. In conclusion, although access to technology is not the main determent in an individuals success and status, it can be influential and beneficial as it contributes to social inclusion. Becoming integrated into a digitally enabled society (Clayton & Macdonald, 2012) allows for easily accessible opportunities. However it is not the absolute variable in the achievement of ones goals. The article outlines the influence of the Internet on our culture. Similarly to the Internet, sound and media has an impact on society and the way in which individuals lives are shaped.
