The titrator TitroLine KF trace is a very complex and completely coulometric titrator used to measure the humidity ratio according to Karl-Fischer. The titrators operability allows you to work in an uncomplicated way. The display asks you to select the respective functions and/or to set the respective parameters. The titrators display shows you the actual status even during the operation sequence. The methods for sample titrations and the collection of blank values are already pre-assigned. Thus, it is possible to start the titration directly after installation. Normally, it is not necessary to change the titration parameters. Almost all parts are already pre-assembled. Thus, the measuring place can easily be installed within minutes. Due to the connection of a PC-keyboard, e.g. TZ 2835, it is easier to weight samples and to enter alphabetical sample designations.
1.2 Reagents
Solutions to be used: All common and modern Karl-Fischer reagents can be used for the coulometry process. There is a general rule: It is strictly necessary to mind all valid safety guidelines for chemical products. This applies particularly to inflammable and/or caustic liquids.

Fill the KF Anolyte into the brown 1 l-reagent bottle. You can also connect the GL 45 adaptor directly to the anolyte bottle if it has a GL-45 thread. It is also possible to use other reagent bottles with a GL 45 thread or a S 40 thread (adaptor TZ 1795) instead of the provided square laboratory bottle. Power Supply of the Titration Stand TM KF The titrator stand is energised via the titrator. Connect the titration stand and the titrator with the provided low voltage cable TZ 1577. Please use the upper connection socket at the magnetic stirrer/TMKF. The socket on the titrator is to be found directly below the USB-port. (See Fig. 16). Working with the titration stand Dosage: Pump the anolyte into the titration vessel by pressing the front part of the rocker switch. As long as you press the button the dosing process proceeds. Siphon off: Siphon off the solution from the titration vessel by pressing the back part of the rocker switch. As long as you press the button it will be siphoned off. Note: Mind the fill level of the waste bottle. Before you siphon off the titrating solution please make sure that the disposal bottle can absorb this amount of solution.
The built-in magnetic stirrer stirs the liquids in the titration vessel. You can adjust the stirring speed at the turning knob at the front side of the titration stand ( Fig. 19).
Fig.19 Troubles Problems might occur if the tubes are not connected properly or the pressure / low pressure system has a leakage. Then, after a few seconds operating time of the pump, no reagents will be conveyed anymore. When checking the tubes please observe that the bottle screwing and all adaptors are leak-proof. The same applies to the tube connections of the drying bottle. Note: Buckled tubes cause incorrect dosages and also the siphon off process does not work properly. Please check the tubes and their connections for leak-tightness on a regular basis. Replace if necessary.
If the reagents continue to run in from the storage bottle after the actual dosage process has ended, position the bottle at lower level than the titration vessel. If the reagents continue to run in from the storage bottle between the dosage process and the siphon off process, please wait a few seconds between the changes. We recommend to remove the glass adaptor with the dosing and exhaust hose after adding the KF-anolyte and to close the ground-in opening with the provided die glass stopper NS 14,5.

Start Drift The value of the start drift in g/min must be equal or even lower in order to start a titration. If the value is exceeded, the TitroLine KF trace is in the conditioning mode. The standard value is 10,00 g/min. This value can be entered from 0,01 to 250 g/min. Stop delay time Is the time in seconds in which the drift-stop criteria are being checked. The stop delay time can be set between 0 and 60 seconds. The preset standard value is 5 s. Stop Drift The stop drift in g/min is not an absolute end value. The end value of a titration is always the currently measured drift + stop drift. An example: If the current drift shows a value of 1,5 g/min and the stop drift is set to 2,0 g/min, then the end drift actually to be reached is 3,5 g/min. This means: The lower the entered stop drift, the longer takes the measurement. If a high stop drift (e.g. 20 g/min) is entered, the measurement ends significantly faster. Low value = exact measurement, high value = inexact measurement. As stop drift 2 g/min are preset as standard value. The value can be entered from 0,01 to 25 g/min. Diagram 1 shows on the left the titration curve with the measured variable water per time and the derived variable drift per time.

Diagram 1: Water and drift on the left, drift tolerance on the right Stop Drift Tolerance If the drift change is within the stop drift tolerance during the entire follow-up time, the measurement will be ended.
As stop drift tolerance 0,01 g/min is preset as standard value. The value can be entered from 0,01 to 25,00 g/min. In case the drift stop has not been reached as criterion, as new stop criterion is the stop drift tolerance will be used. It is the derivative of the drift with respect to time. Diagram 2 shows the typical progression of the stop drift tolerance. Thus, the automatic stop of titrations with side reactions is possible.
Diagram 2: The criterion stop drift as difference to the start drift, the stop drift tolerance as stability criterion for the drift. Only one of the two end criteria stop drift and stop drift tolerance must be met to end the measurement.

Min. Titration Time After the minimum titration time has passed, the adjusted stop criteria are checked. The min. titration time can be adjusted from 0,1 to 30,0 minutes. The standard value is preset to 0,5 minutes for all methods. Particularly when worked with a baking oven the minimum titration time must be higher. Max. Titration Time The maximum titration time is used with samples that generate an increased drift in the end and when it is not possible to achieve stable end values. The max. titration time can be adjusted from 0,0 to 60,0 min. The standard value is preset to 10,0 min. for all methods.

7.1 Theory
In coulometry, the KF solution contains iodide. This iodide will be oxidised to iodine at the anode of the generator cell. At the cathode, in parallel thereto, mainly hydrogen will be generated which will mount in the form of small bubbles to the surface and hence become withdrawn from the balance. The iodine being generated reacts immediately with the water according to the Karl Fischer reaction. During the entire titration process, only iodide is present in the solution. This will change all at a sudden as soon as no more water is left in the titration cell. As a result of the further addition of iodine, iodine and iodide will be coexisting in parallel and form a reversible redox pair A voltage is applied to the indicator electrode, and this will cause the iodide to release its electron at the positive anode, and iodine will form. At the cathode, the electron will again be passed on to the iodine, and again iodide will form. In this way, it is possible to measure a current which will detect the end of the reaction. However, this occurs only directly at the surface of the two platinum pins which means that no iodine can react with the water of the sample. In volumetric titration, the iodine is dosed using a motor piston burette, but the detection of the end of titration is identical ( Fig. 77)
Fig. 77
84
Fig. 78 The minimum filling height inside the titration vessel should be 3 cm so that the generator electrode is properly immersed ( Fig. 79): The maximum filling height is 1 cm below the vessels top. The stirring speed should be adapted manually to the filling height. However, the minimum setting of the speed should not be less than stage 3-3.5.
Fig. 79. Within a short time, as a function of the amount of humidity contained in the titration vessel, the drift will reach a stable value. Under normal conditions, this value will be between 0.5 g/min and 10 g/min. A drift below 0.5 g/min is indicative of a previous overreaction (e.g. caused by too slow stirring), whereas a too high drift indicates an intrusion of humidity or side reactions of a preceding sample. If an increased drift is stable over a couple of minutes, titration is nevertheless possible since a delta criterion, defined as a function of the initial drift, is input as a break criterion (please refer to titration parameters).

7.3 Handling
The indicator electrode is placed in the titration vessel in the opening with the NS 7.5 and connected to the device using the two blue plugs. Use a funnel to fill in the reagent up to a minimum filling height of 3 cm. Subsequently, insert the generator electrode. Place a drying tube with a fresh dried molecule sieve (0.3 nm) on top of the generator electrode. Prior to that, the molecule sieve is to be dried at a minimum temperature of 250C for six hours. Use the enclosed cable to connect the generator electrode to the titrator, with the green plug connecting to the green socket and the black plug to the black one. Use a fresh septum to close the sample filling hole. The septum has to be impermeable to atmospheric humidity If you are using a generator electrode with a diaphragm, a funnel or a needle with syringe should be used immediately after the insertion of the generator electrode to fill the cathode reagent in the generator electrode up to the filling height of the anolyte. Apart from that, the working procedure is the same. Handling the sample using a one-way syringe Usually, samples are drawn up using a one-way syringe or a calibrated glass syringe and then injected into the titration vessel. In this context, the absolute water quantity per sample should be within the range of 20 g to 2000 g of water. If the water quantity is less than that, "accuracy" will decrees, if it is larger, the duration of the titration will increase. A water quantity of 2000 g will be titrated in less than two minutes. The following weighed-in quantities are recommended with the corresponding quantities of water in the sample: Water amount Unit Sample amount in the sample 10 ppm 1,0 - 10 100 ppm 0,5 - 5,0 1000 pm 0,1 - 1,0 1 % 50 - 500 10 % 5 - 100 100 % 1 - 10 Weighing-in of a sample, adding and weighing back Unit g g g mg mg mg Water amount [g] 10 - 100 50 - 500 100 1 000 500 - 5 000 500 - 10 000 1 000 - 10 000
86
If a sample is drawn up using a syringe, it has to be ensured that no air will be drawn through the sample. Depending of the atmospheric humidity, air may contain a lot of water, possibly even more than the sample itself. It is possible to rinse the syringe beforehand with the sample. The diameter of the needle is to be adapted to the viscosity of the sample. With low viscous samples, one should use a 0.8 or even a 1.0 mm needle. The larger the diameter of the needle, the more often needs the septum to be replaced. The low drift is a good indicator for a tight septum. Under normal conditions (small needle diameter), it is possible to titrate approximately 20-30 or even more samples using one septum. Place the syringe with a sample on the analytical balance, then tare the balance. The sample is dosed into the titration vessel, the syringe is put back on the analytical balance and weighed back. The weighed-in quantity, now with a negative sign, is input as absolute value in the titrator or automatically transferred, respectively. If a multiple determination is being carried out, it has proven in practice to draw the entire sample quantity into the syringe and then inject partial quantities of it into the titration vessel. As a rule, this will lead to smaller standard deviations compared to drawing up each small partial quantity anew. The main reason for this is found in the risk of taking up atmospheric humidity from the air. Generally, it is also possible to use a calibrated syringe (e.g. from Hamilton) to add samples as a volume. As a matter of course, if the result is to be calculated in terms of ppm or %, the density of the liquid has to be taken into account. It may be input in the calculation formula.
Fig. 81
87
Place the filled syringe on the balance as illustrated, then tare the balance ( Fig. 82). On the Titroline KF trace, the method is started by pressing the Start key.
Fig. 82 Subsequently, a part of the syringe contents, for instance approx 1 ml, is injected into the titration vessel ( Fig. 83). The syringe containing the residual quantity of standard solution is weighed back, the quantity reading is input as weighed-in quantity on the coulometer ( Fig. 84).

External extraction is used in the following cases: o If the water is extracted from the sample only slowly o If one has to reckon with side reactions. o Frequently in the case of solid samples o If a special solvent has to be used The description of external extraction can be found in an additional document. If required, please feel free to contact us.
7.5 Verification
The verification of the coulometer is done using a standard. We recommend the use of liquid standards with percentages of 0.1 mg of water per gram up to 1 mg of water per gram Recovery is determined by a multiple determination of a standard. The mean value and the relative standard deviation are determined. Triple up to tenfold determinations are usual. The mean value reflects the recovered value of the standard. The relative standard deviation indicates the reliability of the determination. Typical values of a standard with 1 mg of water / g of standard with a weighed-in quantity of 0.5000 g up to 2.0000 g are given below: Recovery: 950 - 1050 ppm (97% - 103%) Reproducibility: +/- 30 ppm (SD); +/- 3 % (RSD) Linearity can be performed in the same working step if weighing-in was made using different quantities. Using the 1 mg of water / g standard, the weighing-in operations can start at 0.5 g to be increased, for instance, up to 2.0 g in six steps. The correlation coefficient and the zero passage may be used as check parameters. The example below shows weighing-ins of approximately 500 to 1500 mg of water standard. Recovery and relative standard deviation are within the range of acceptance.

Speed up the drying process of the titration vessel. In order to speed up the drying process, use a one-way syringe to add so many drops of KF single component reagent 5 mg/millimetre until a slightly yellowish colour becomes visible. The drift will drop to a typical value below 100 l/min. If a drift of 0 l/min is being displayed, overtitration has occurred. By adding some drops of methanol or ethanol, it is now possible to add a small quantity of water again. Drift to high (permanent values > 10 l/min) o o o o Dry or replace molecular sieve Clean all ground faces, use a grease at the top edge. Replace septum Renew anolyte or catholyte

For all other types of balances it is possible to obtain an already assembled connection cable (on demand). For this we need detailed information about the RS-232-C-interface of the balance used. The connection cable is to be connected to the RS-232-C-interface 2 of the titrator TitroLine KF trace. This side of the connection cables always consists of a 4-pole mini-plug. The other side of the cable can, depending on the type of balance, be a 25-pole plug (Sartorius), a 9-pole plug (Mettler AB-S) or a 15-pole specialised plug (Mettler AT) etc. In order to allow the balance data to be sent to the titrator, the data transmission parameters of the titrator and the balance must correspond to each other. Additionally, it is necessary to carry out some more standard settings on the side of the balances: The balance is to send the balance data via RS-232-C only by means of a print command. The balance is to send the balance data only after the display standstill. The balance should never be set to automatic sending and/or send continuously. Handshake on the balance must be set to off, or even Software Handshake or Pause. No special characters such as S or St are allowed to be used as prefix in the balance data of the balance data string. In such a case it might be possible that the TitroLine KF trace cannot process the balance data correctly. After you have connected the balance with the appropriate cable to the titrator TitroLine KF trace and have adjusted all settings in the balance software, and possibly in the titrator TitroLine KF trace, you can now test the data transfer of the balance very easily. Start the one method. Confirm the sample designation. Then, the display asks you: a) To press the print-button at the balance Parameters to weighted sample automatically b) To enter the weighted sample then the parameters are still set to weighted sample manually Put an object onto the balance and press the print button. After the standstill of the balance display there will be beep at the titrator TitroLine KF trace and the transmitted balance data appear: a) After approx. 5 sec. in the display and the display changes automatically into the measuring display. b) The weighted sample must again be confirmed with <Enter> or <F1>.

Previously it must be ensured that the KF-reagent has been removed from the titration vessel/generator electrode. Subsequently, it is to be rinsed with alcohol (ethanol, isopropanol) which must then also be removed.
As storage location we recommend rooms which have the following conditions: Temperature between + 10 and + 40 C for operation and storage, Humidity according to EN 61 010, part 1: Maximum relative humidity 80 % for temperatures up to 31 C, Linearly decreasing to 50 % relative humidity with a temperature of 40 C Your titrator TitroLine KF trace will certainly have a long service life. However, it is necessary to mind the following advice: If it is necessary to dispose your device, please observe all official regulations of your country and/or city.
