MES to commemorate 25 years of foundation

Mater Ecclesiae School will be celebrating its silver anniversary with the theme, 25 Yearning for Excellence Animated by Renewed Spirit A new milestone. Administrators, Faculty and Staff work hard as they plan various activities for the whole month celebration. Sr. Gemma S. Daseco, DVMI and Sr. Imelda V. Bautista, DVMI, school directress and school principal launched the 25 years of foundation of the school followed by the prevailing moves of the street dancers last January. Planting 25 fruit bearing trees, inviting 25 kids to be fed at a health day and saving bottles for the Plastik ni Juan Project are part of this years grand celebration. Alumni from Batch Pioneer to Bellatorus Intum will get together in the upcoming Grand Alumni Homecoming on January 45, next year. The Search for Mr. and Ms. Foundation, one of the most awaited event will be joined by students from preschool to high school and alumni and will be on January 17. A Grand Family Day for all departments will also be held on January 25 to promote bond among Ecclsiaeans and their families. Ecclesiaeans would still move and groove as field demonstration will be on January 26. Gabi ng Parangal will be done to reward employees who fully served the school for more than five years. Palarong Mater, a sportsfest open for all parents, employees and alumni will also occur. Heads of different committees are as follows: Ms. Hazel Nacianceno, Grand Alumni Homecoming; Ms. Rowena Manuel, Search for Mr. and Ms. Foundation; Ms. Teresita Junio, Field Demonstration; Ms. Evelyn Pendioday, Gabi ng Parangal; Mr. Victorio Ricafort, Palarong Mater. We all know that this is the biggest event of this school year. Since celebrating 25 year happens only once, we are preparing a lot. We have started since May and the different committees are conducting monthly meetings. I hope that the Ecclesiaeans will cooperate so that we could ensure the success of our 25th anniversary, Ms. Vivian De Ramos, chairman of this years foundation said as she looks forward for a fruitful celebration.

MES ACHIEVES 3-PEAT VICTORY AT UPLB

By: Veronica A. Manabo MES topped among other schools in a poem making contest held at University of the Philippines Los Banos, Aug 5. Rexanne Monique Cosico of IV-Prophet Nehemiah bagged the first place in Pagsulat ng Tula during the Pintig ng Lahi contest with her piece Bagong Bala. Her piece, as she shared, is about the importance of Filipino language in eradicating poverty. Thus, the theme, Wika, sandata sa kahirapan. 11 schools all over CALABARZON participated in the said contest. This gave Rexanne the chills but still managed to provide an outstanding output. As a matter of fact, Rexanne was anxious for the results. Unexpected kasi five minutes nalang kulang pa ako ng isang stanza,she humbly stated. Sabi ko naman sa kanya, think positive at just believe in yourself. At yun, nakakatuwa kasi nanalo si Rexanne., Ms. Mari Jane Rigidor, her mentor said. Mr. Rafael Layug was impressed. Proud ako kasi pangatlong beses tayong nagchampion, he claimed. She received a medal, certificate, a cash prize of 3,000 pesos in recognition to her triumph. Aside from winning in poem contest, Ecclesiaean dancers got the third place as they performed the Sayaw sa Lambat dance in Tradisyonal na sayaw contest. MES Sabayang Pagbigkas ranked fourth out of 10 schools with their MythHuman interpretation of what society and government today is. The UP Alliance of Development and Communication Studies (UP ADS) organized the said contest in order to use the Filipino language in communicating for the development of the society.

Senior Scout Julie Anne Silvestre was awarded as the first Ecclesiaean to be awarded the Chief Girl Scout Medal, the highest award given to girl scouts across the nation. Silvestre was awarded last October 24 at Aliw Theater by Dr. Salud Bagalso, GSP National President, Dr. Dolores Santiago, GSP First Vice President and journalist Ms. Kara David of GMA News. In order to become a medalist, a Senior or Cadet Girl Scout must meet the GSP standards by rendering outstanding service to the community. She worked on a scheme which concerns the growth

and health development of the children living in a poor community of informal settlers along the former railroads for eight months. She admitted that she had encountered difficulties especially during the initial stage of implementation. But with determination, support from her family and assistance from others, the project was a success. I hope that as a medallist, I have set an example and inspired others so that in their own little ways, they can also give hope to the community and give inspiration to other people., Julie said as she looks forward to next medalists of MES.

HS Students unify in the Acquaintance Party

By: Joyce Marie L. Cuevas Ecclesiaeans showed off their inner child spirit on this years acquaintance party held last June 18. In a childhood atmosphere, the students were clad in childrens attire. Dressed in jumpers, suspenders, dresses and even fairy costumes, students from grade 7 to fourth year partied with the theme Kids at the Carnival, Join the Festival. Clubs such as Circa Mathematica, MESSCISOC, English Club, Ecclesiaen Ministries and Sayaweh performed with their best as they stepped on stage. Ii iiiiT4DC, Metanoia, Teatro Pacita and the MESSCCO officers also rendered intermission numbers. The students participated and enjoyed playing as kids in different games like Catch the Dragons Tail, Manila Paper Dance and more. The acquaintance party is an annual occasion for the students and teachers to celebrate in festivities together to strengthen the s p i r i t of E c cl e s i a e n solidarity.

Girl Scouts plummet to District Camp Action

Ecclesiaean scouts enjoyed the feel of nature as they joined the district encampment at Camp Maria Makiling, Los Banos last Oct. 11-13. With the theme Believe, Belong, Be More, five schools around San Pedro including Mater Ecclesiae School attended the 8th Senior District Encampment. Activities like writing, poster-making, lanternmaking and knot tying were prepared for the girls. Training in karate was also given to learn basic self-defense. Awards and certificates were given at the closing ceremony. The camping served as a way to strengthen harmony and hone girl scouting skills.

Live Pure Movement sheds some light on Teenage Sexuality

Awareness on teenage sexuality has been raised to 3rd and 4th year students as a youth-oriented movement held a seminar last Sept 13. A Youth-oriented movement encouraged Ecclesiaeans to say no to safe sex, and yes to saved sex. The Live Pure Movement conducted a four hour seminar to 3rd year and 4th year students lat MTV and St. Joseph hall. Ms. Raine Equico, a member of CFC Youth for Family and Life and a missionary of the Live Pure Movement, tackled chastity and total happiness among students. She also stressed that it is important to live pure as she talked about relationships, its limitations and sex. Lyka Mamauag, an alumni of MES, also shared her experiences on having relationships. Live Pure aims to lower the rate of teen pregnancies and premarital sex by I ncreasing the awareness of the youth on these issues.

Seniors suit up for Cadet Regalia

Fourth year active girl scouts dressed like young ladies with their Cadet Uniform. Rebecca T. Basanes, Regional executive of Southern Luzon introduced this uniform last year and advised Seniors to wear the Cadet uniform. It is for their preparation as cadet girl scouts when they pursue scouting in the collegiate level. The cadet uniform is a striped white blouse, green skirt with tangerine scarf and paired with black heels. It is worn during meetings, ceremonies and Eucharistic celebrations just like the Type A uniform.

GSP beams in smiles on Team Building 2013

In order to promote the sisterhood of girl scouts, GSP Mater Ecclesiae conducted a team building for active girl scouts last August 30. MES GS Senior Planning board designed activities centered in "United nations" theme in line with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts celebration. Girl scouts were grouped into five countries: Philippines, USA, Italy, Japan and Mexico. Each country was asked to promote their respective countries in the food presentation contest. Philippines, in their festive way of presenting Filipino food outshined others as they were awarded as the Best in Food Presentation succeeded by Italy as they featured pizzas, and bread. Other activities included games and a race that featured various girl scout information.

Head of Laguna Church hands down his benison to the MES tabernacle
Laguna bishop blessed the school chapel's tabernacle as he visited MES last September 13. Bishop Buenaventura Famadico of the Diocese of San Pablo celebrated the holy mass and permitted the use of the tabernacle inside the chapel. For four years, the using of the tabernacle as to hold holy hosts was restricted. Students of Second year Prophet Joshua, Third Year - Prophet Zechariah and Fourth year - Prophet Nehemiah as well as MESSCo officers, various faculty and staff gathered consequently for a whole day adoration vigil.

Ecclesiaeans enlivened the Filipino spirit as MES celebrated Buwan ng Wika last August. With the theme Wika natin ang daang matuwid, various activities were prepared by the High School Filipino department. The month-long celebration commenced last August 1 as seniors Miah Isabelle Canton and Julie Anne Silvestre rendered a song entitled Tagumpay Nating Lahat. Filipino subject teachers prepared trivias and riddles about Filipino language and literature. The celebration culminated with Palarong Pinoy, a mini sportsfest which included Filipino games like Palo Sebo, Pukpok Palayok and Tumbang-Preso. Ms. Mary Joy B. Camino, Filipino coordinator believes that through these activities, Ecclesiaeans could still embrace the Filipino.culture.

Jeran Laceste flies to the peak of Boy Pick Up Line Contest

MESs Boy Pick Up bested among seven contenders in the Rotary Club of San Pedros Makabuluhang Pick-up Line sa Wikang Filipino Contest last August 31. Jeran Laceste of IVProphet Jonah was hailed the champion as he uttered his pick up line to the judges and audience present in Barangay Satellite Multipurpose hall. His winning pick up line was Kung si Andres Bonifacio, Itak ang ginamit na sandata para sa kapayapaan, at si Gat Jose Rizal naman ay may Pluma, ako naman, May Papa at Mama PAPAnaigin ko ang Tapang ng isang Pilipino, at Handa akong MAMAtay para sa Pilipino. He admitted that days before the contest, he and his mentor, Mr. Rafael P. Layug had to think out of the box for unlike the traditional pick up lines that invoke romance, they had to make a pick up line about the theme: Wika natin ang daang matuwid. He also shared that his winning pick up was just thought of minutes before the contest. I am proud of him because he made it to the top at the first ever Pick Up Line contest, said Mr. Raffy Layug, Jerans mentor. Jeran, received medal, trophy, certificate and a cash prize.

MES triumphs in Cataquiz inter-school competition

Ecclesiens once again made the MES family proud as they represent the school with all their determination and perseverance in the first ever Cataquiz inter-school competition held at Pacita Astrodome, September 2324. MES Sabayang Pagbigkas was hailed champion over seven schools with their own interpretation of the piece Merkado by Ateneo De Manila students. The winning group was facilitated by Ms. Kristel Villamor, Sir Raffy Layug and Ms. Diana B. Sahagun. Julie Anne Silvestre ranked 3rd of 14 , in Isahan Pag-awit with the contest piece Lipad ng Pangarap . Rowell Van O. Solo also ranked 3rd in Talumpati contest with the piece Wika: Susi sa ginintuang tanikala by his coEcclesians Rexanne Monique C. Cosico, Julie Anne V. Silvestre and Katrina F. Fanio. Both Silvestre and Solo were trained by Ms. Evelyn Pendioday. Before the awarding started, Baby Espiosa, member of San Pedro Municipal Tourism, Culture and Arts Office said the essence of this years theme Wika natin ang daang matuwid, was to remind the contestants as well as the administrating teachers the true meaning of the Filipino spirit.

Student-Teachers Day highlights World Teachers month

After spending months of teaching, faculty members of MES high school took a break as student-teachers took over for two days. Students from third year and fourth year level took over the faculty room as they were designated each as teachers. MESSCCo Governor, Christian Modino replaced Ms. Cyd Villareal;Rowell Solo represented Ms. Evelyn Pendioday as the and Veronica Manabo took the place of Sir Victorio Ricafort. This was concluded with a two-hour program of games and surprises for teachers as each class preapred different gimmicks for their advisers and subject teachers.

MES Senior Scouts, engaged in International Jamboree

Selected high school boy scouts from Mater Ecclesiae School joined this years jamboree with the theme, Scout for Environment International Jamboree. The Officials of Boy Scouts of the Philippines (BSP) facilitated the event and assisted the Senior Scouts from France, Japan, Philippines, Cambodia and more at Kawa-Kawa, Ligao City, Albay on Aug. 21-25. Various activities such as poster making, obstacle courses, emergency preparedness and different bases made the scouts develop their different talents and honed their surviving skills.

MES showed off business skills at De La Salle University- Dasmarias as an Ecclesiaen topped in the first ever Sales Pitch competition last October 1. With his confidence and sense of humor, the "kabaong de poro" of Rowell Van O. Solo, a student of IV-Prophet Nehemiah ranked first as he competed against other four contenders in the said competition. He tried to persuade the audience to buy a coffin in two minutes. Solo won a plaque, a certificate of recognition, gift certificates from the event's sponsors, several DLSU-D merchandise and a bag from a sponsor. The contest was in line the DLSU-D Marketing department's Sales and Marketing Recruitment Training (SMART). This was attended by 13 seniors and Mr. Rafael Layug.

Gardenia visits MES on health advocacy

A popular breadmaker visited MES to introduce a health program for students last Oct 3. Gardenia is currently launching a program that aims to encourage healthy living. The visit was highlighted by lecture on health tips. Ms.Lovelyn Cervas, nutritionist of Gardenia, discussed healthy eating habits and importance of having an active lifestyle. Ecclesiaens took part in games such as: Q&As and Eating contest. A demonstration on how to make a Banana Rockroad sandwich followed. Gardenia gave free samples of their products, reminding the students to Eat

Aiming to be Venturer Scouts, Pathfinder Scouts from MES participated at the different survival courses. The camp was held at Brgy. Panibong, Pagsanjan, Laguna, July 6 -7. Leadership skills are

taught to the scouts. They were also trained in several skills which are necessary in order to survive outdoors. They learned the basics of swimming, knot tying, firstaid and stress management. After the course, they were awarded as Venturers.

BSP steps into Pathfinder pedestal at Anibong

Aspiring scouts ventured in their four-day camp for the Pathfinder rank during the Crew Leader Training Course. Together with their outfit adviser, Sir Ernie Capisonda, the 14 participants for the Pathfinder rank and five other scouters as facilitators participated in the CLTC in Barangay Anibong, Pagsanjan, Laguna from October 23-26. After almost a week of hard work, their efforts paid off when they all advanced and went home with the pathfinder rank. Scout Gian Carlo M. Bongcales, , one of the aids in the camp, said, It was fun! I am happy to serve the scouts and I wish them all the best.

Mater produced two young journalists that qualified to the regional level as MIF staffers won in the recently concluded Division Secondary Schools Press Conference last October 17-19 in Magdalena, Laguna. Julie Anne Silvestre of IV -Prophet Nehemiah bested among other writers as she placed first in News Writing - English while Raevien Pintang of Grade 8 Prophet Joshua ranked second in Science and Health writing English making them both Laguna representatives to the upcoming Re-

gional Schools Press Conference on January 26-28, 2014 in Dasmarinas, Cavite. Staffers bagged places as Kris Parcon got the second place in Editorial Cartooning under collaborative writing, Rexanne Monique Cosico ranked third in Journalism Quiz bee and Vianna Joyce Arellano placed 9th in Photojournalism English. The DSSPC is an event for Campus Journalists to enhance journalistic competence through healthy competitions such as individual contests, Radio Broadcasting and Collaborative publishing contests.

Did you know that according to Unicef, 73 percent of students in urban areas in the Philippines had experienced some sort of verbal abuse on campus? In rural areas, 30 percent of the same grouping has reported that they had been physically bullied. The newly passed Republic Act 10627, more commonly known as the Anti-Bullying Act of 2013, aims to decrease the statistics above. A hard punch here or there, a dark bruise afterwards. An immunity from a kick to the gut, in exchange of something else. A malicious rumor that will be passed from ear to ear. A harsh criticism posted online or said directly about one's height, weight or color- these are all forms of bullying. Many students take these scenarios lightly because bullying is an issue that has long been unnoticed. However; these acts, specially when taken into extremes, can turn out very well into major problems if bullying remained unnoticed. The passage of the new law finally forces one not to take bullying lightly. Studies show that victims of bullying and bullies themselves alike suffer from psychological traumas after. Victims and survivors of bullying all generally report that their academic performance, social interaction, self-confidence and perspective all took a trip downhill because of bullying. On the other hand, researches have shown that bullies who repent later endure long guilty episodes and loss of dignities. The same researches also show that bullies who go on unpunished grow on to develop their bullying acts into worse ones later on as they grow older. The problem before is that victims are often afraid to speak out for themselves in fear of the wrath of the bullies. The consequence of this is that more often than not, school authorities are unaware of what's happening or unsure of what to do as a consequence. Under the new law, all elementary and secondary schools shall be directed to adopt policies to address the existence of bullying in their respective institutions. Among these policies is the prohibition of all forms of bullying on school grounds, school-related functions and bullying through the use of technology. In our school, the rates of physical and verbal bullying are quite few compared to that of others. This may be because we are in a Catholic institution. It can be because we are afraid of the dire consequences afterwards. This may even be because we were trained up to be Ecclesiaens. What this is not, though, is a reason to rejoice-for there is still a rate. Even if only one Ecclesiaen is a victim; that Ecclesiaen's life is drastically changed-and not in a good way. As students of this institution who proudly bear the label 'Ecclesiaen'; it is our mission to lessen the rates of bullying in our school further and if possible, eradicate it completely. The cyberbullying statistics in our school are quite harder to accept. As of November in this school year alone, --- cases had been reported to the Prefect of Discipline's Office. This should be a wake up call to all Ecclesiaens who roam the vast world of the internet to be more careful and prudent in posting statuses, tweets and thoughts online. Join in on the Prefect of Discipline, Sir Victorio Ricafort's campaign that he continually reminds: think before you click. Bullying is a threat that; until then; had hung over the heads of unfortunate students. It has detrimental effects both to victims and bullies themselves. With the approval of the Anti-Bullying Act, the unfortunate victims are now armed to defend themselves against the law offenders. What was before just an ordinary school rule had become a law of the land, with more grave consequences than a call to principals office. So next time you think about being a bully, do stop and hurry. Join in on the mission to lower the cases of bullying

"One for all, all for one." This line can summarize the whole of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada's privilege speech to defend himself in the Senate, September 25 in a chapter of the 10B Pork barrel scam saga. His speech implicated a certain number of other senators in the criminal enterprise he is accused of along with others: the mystery of where the pork barrel went and who knows where it did. The PDAF (Priority Development Assistant Fund), more known to Juan de la Cruz as pork , comes from the taxes the citizens pay with the assurance that it will be used for the development of the Philippines. Our chosen leaders are the ones our hard-earned

taxes are entrusted to. It is expected that each one of them will use it to fulfill their promises of progress for our nation. Ideally, these taxes were to go to the most under-developed areas, to cities struck by calamities and to the poorest of the poor. It was supposed to be the significant factor for our country's development. Handling these taxes was a task that our legislators signed up for and, sad to say, some failed to do well. Knowing how important and hard-earned the money we pay for the taxes are, it's common sense that dictates that the one who has the authority to use it should be very interested in knowing where it goes. Regardless if it will go to an orphanage, a

public hospital or a schoolit's their responsibility to know who will benefit from the taxes we worked hard for. It isn't everyday that one disposes of a million or even 50,000 without batting an eye and thinking that it is of no consequence is not a sign of a responsible leader. Hiring another person without fully learning the details of where, when and how much of the PDAF is to be dispatched is not a thing a responsible leader does. Inattention to such details is a sure sign of indifference and neglect. The failure to know how long it went or if it went behind your back is one great act in itself-one of gullibility. The PDAF scandal proves that Filipinos trusted some wrong people to deal with the taxes they worked hard for. These legislators way of handling the taxes that fuel the PDAF is a performance that Juan de la Cruz would surely not request an encore for.

Chivalry: the honorable and polite way of behaving, especially toward women. With the word explained, does chivalry still exist for a man? Yes, of course! From the very start; when God created man, the Almighty took one of the man's ribs and used it to make the first woman. This symbolizes that men should protect and care for women just like our ribs would protect our heart. God created the woman to be a companion to man, that is why it is in a mans duty

and prerogative to be protective and courteous among women. Women keep on pursuing the thought that men and women are equal. They take pride in themselves in opening their own doors, just to prove they can. This is not a false notion and indeed true to an extent. However, it might be that because of this logical reasoning, chivalry soon died out. However, mans innate compassion for women made chivalry survive up to now. During the 13th century,

Whenever a man disrespects a woman, he is given a rough punishment. Now, chivalry is still alive but it is a given that it has certainly waned. Some men certainly seems to forget it exists but take note that it is only some and not all. There are still men out there who takes pride in honouring and serving women even without the loom of punishment. These men, and I pray, all Ecclesiaen men, ensure chivalry still exists and will never be erased.

This school year, the school implemented the Integrative and Cooperative Learning (ICL) program to address the problem of students who find it hard to manage their learning years in school. The addition of this program into our curriculum is both a timely and wise one in time to the tune of the K to 12 education plan. ICL takes up 40 minutes a day on an average of three days per school week. This period is designed to be used for studying hard concepts one did not understand from an Introduced lesson, finishing and completing school works, time for the class' adviser to make announcements and generally bond with the class, and scheduled surveys and talks by the school's guidance councilors. The Department of Education made the right call in adding ICL into the curriculum. Teachers can give more attention to pupils that are in need mentally and emotionally. Based on research, generally about 20-25 percent of the whole class are slow learners and ICL gives them more time to learn more for a longer time period. The opportunity to complete and finish all assigned requirements is also a privilege courtesy of

the ICL period. With homeworks and seatworks piled up high, projects nowhere near done and quizzes and exams coming up, ICL is really a blessing. Our school's take on the ICL program is also intrapersonal. It encourages a student to learn more about himself or herself. One of the weekly activities for ICL is journal-writing, which helps express one's emotions and thoughts. These journal entries are then submitted, read and replied on by the class adviser. This serves to let adviser and student know one another more. This is also a means of communication and a bridge to friendship, as a student shares in the journal whether today he or she laughed a lot or cried for he or she failed in a Math quiz. Our guidance councilors also provide some activities for the students ICL schedule such as talks, written surveys, self test questions, IQ tests and more. All in all, the DepEd's addition of the ICL program and the school's choice to implement it is one that is full of advantages. This particular addition of the program into our curriculum will surely benefit all Ecclesiaens not only now but in the long run.

Two more years of hardwork!? Thats the reaction of most students when we realized that we are included in the Kto12 Curriculum. Some took it positively; hence, in the form of a challenge. On the other hand; the others took it negatively, saying that its a waste of time, money and effort. Is this the real solution to our countrys worsening situation in education? Its a question only time and our batch will solve because we are the pioneer batch. We are the guinea pig. With the new lessons that the Department of Education approved, were tackling some lessons that are quite advanced than what was before. Some just basically stare unseeing at the

board full of stuff that makes no sense to a novice. Several want to give up because of the constant pressure imposed. This is especially hard to students who belong to the cream section of our school. This section is the place where all hell breaks loose when students and teachers tackle Geometry and Electron Configuration head -on. However, there is a saying that there is a rainbow after the rain. The main aim of the approved K to 12 curriculum is to develop and enhance our past education curriculum. It comes naturally that the new lessons designed to challenge a 4th year is introduced to a Grade 8 ; the equal of a 2nd year in the past curricu-

lum; because it is in the name of academic progress. It is an enhanced version of the past curriculum and we all know that with enhancement comes more challenges. The K to 12 is like a stepping stone in a maze that will let us advance to the next level. We are Filipino children. The Kto12 program was approved because of its goal to strengthen the minds of Filipino children. We know this is something thats hard to fully achieve. We, students, were given the challenge of 2 more years in high school for our own good and; someday, for our nation's. One day, well be thanking the Kto12 curriculum. Surely, well all look forward to that day. With diligence and hard work, we can achieve many things. The Kto12 program is nothing but a stepping stone to a successful life in the nearing future towards the mountain of success.

The Mater Ecclesiae School canteen implemented two new policies this school year which are the removal of sodas from its shelves and the increased costs of the prices of student meals. The removal of the

Chivalry is defined as the qualities idealized by knighthood such as bravery, courtesy, honor and gallantry toward women. Some of us are not familiar with this word because it does not exist anymore except in memory. It has strayed and whether it can be brought back is still up for debate. During the good old days, men opened doors for women and offered their seats in a crowded bus. These traits were passed down from generation to

generation. Unfortunately, somewhere along the line, the traits got lost and men forgot what chivalry is. Sad to say, chivalry nowadays is believed to be old-fashioned and outdated. But statistics declare that they are the ones who are mostly involved in our current so-

cial problems like bullying, divorce, spousal abuse and child abuse. If chivalry is not yet dead, what more of it is left? Being in denial that it is gone would not do any good. The majority of women have been affected by the loss of chivalry among men, either physically or emotionally. IiMaybe someday, chivalry can be brought back. This woman who represents the whole sisterhood of women certainly hopes so.

The Department of Health (DOH) advised it nationwide due to the ill-effects of sodas to our health. The school's move to adapt the system is correct because it is for the safety of students. Soft drinks pose a danger to health such as diabetes and obesity because of its high sugar content. Moreover, there are other alternatives to soda such as a variety of juices, teas and even distilled water available in the canteen for the thirsty Ecclesiaens which are certainly better for our health. On the issue of the in-

creased prices of meals, Kuya stated that the prices of the ingredients the canteen staff use in preparing meals increased so the administration have no choice but to pass the extra expense to the cost of meals. Based on past events, this is true. Add in the extra expense from the rising prices of gasoline, cost of transportation, etc. that are all used to restock the canteen and prepare meals, the canteen's decision to increase prices is justified. Failure to maintain the canteen's income will inevitably result to bankruptcy. We have to remember that, even though the school canteen's main purpose is to provide service to students, it is also a business which cannot function without a profit. The school's two new canteen policies, first is the removal of soft drinks and second the increase of meal prices, are designed for the betterment of the school and its students. The school's decision to stop selling sodas is for our own welfare. The price of not quenching your thirst with soft drinks is alright if it will mean a healthier you. The increased costs of meals is justifiable and so, just like the longestrunning TV show in America, the phrase "The Price is Right! : applies to it.

Finally! A rush of excitement ran through my veins as the plane door opened. Nostalgia crept in. I pondered the phrase Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the spots where my foot sailed set in adventure. It was during one of those hot, long, lazy afternoons when I decided to go and chill at a quiet cafe to go spending all the time in the world reading. As I feel my eyes relaxing in sight of the pastel-colored painted walls, I was torn from the current world I was living in by the author's making by a voice. Can you recall those contradicting random thoughts about how high school life would be- Will it truly be the happiest stage of your life or will you mess it up? Leaving the cocoon of elementary and facing the jungle known as high school? Perhaps you recall that 'YES!' feeling that causes you to fist bump the air or that 'omg i can't believe it, i'm already in high school!' statement when you got your first ever High School ID, which boasts a picture of you of which you are certain does not look good at all. Remember that summer when you can reserve your locker earlier than the exact date of the starting of classes because you have been officially enrolled as a First Year student? It has passed. Come next June and you will feel excited but in an infinitely different way. For sure, you also had some of these expectations or just plain hopes about how you want the so called 'best years of your student life' should be. Come to think of it, you'd be so caught up once your high school life begins and all these hopes would be of no matter as all your questions and expectations answers and realities continually pass by. Those years are the ones full of unstable feelings that bring students metamorphosis-evolution. Changes. Those years will touch who you are-your thoughts, your actions, your identity. Those years will change who you were and will shape you more than you'll ever know-and that will probably the best part... always. I was taken aback from my time travelling as the waiter gave me my usual latte'. I took a sip while I held onto the thought. I felt real equal parts giddy and nervous about reminiscing what's soon to be over in a year and half. By that though, I fished a pen and some pieces of paper in my bag and started to write it all down. Yes, you are probably reading it right now.

The Pride of One Pioneer Grade Eight

When I was in elementary, I didnt feel any special connections with my batch mates. I just knew we were divided into five sections before, and that we belonged to the same level. We discussed the same lessons, we had the same events, and to sum it all up, we grew up together. Only did I realize when we stepped into the high school territory, that we were different. I saw the relationship among us which I thought was something that would never be present in our midst. In our seventh grade, which was last year, I was surprised by the series of contests that were held every month. I have to say, my batch mates were worthy of all our support every time they would perform on stage. We would win third place in some contests, and as a freshman that award would boost our confidence. That award would make us realize that not everything was arranged by age. That award made us proud and humbled. We continually proved age does not matter. A summer passed and in a blast we were in eighth grade. The intramurals was the latest competition in the high school vicinity. The players from our level were waving the flag of our batch, and whether we would win or lose, we would just tell ourselves that there were still four years remaining in our stay in this school. The cheerdance competition was the award that we were to be so proud of; where we ranked first runner up. A team of yellow fighters, we are one. Time would fly and I would realize that as days would pass by, more bonds were formed inside the campus. More friendships were made. That was something which would make grade eight stand out our relationship with each other. Our relationship that would move around like links, from one person to another - whether Haggai or Joshua, Amos or Zephaniah. I am proud of mater Ecclesiae Schools pioneer grade eight batch. I would be very proud to be called a Grade Eight student.

Days pass by so fast that I cant merely remember what I did last quarter; the same time last year I was doing something different. I over think, I pause. I find myself looking through photographs and random writings at the back of my notebooks. Take me back to July where the only thing you mouth out is red ninjas red ninjas go! Words so vested that it fills you with a certain wrath. Swift and on cue just like a real ninja, fading in and out but never falling out of rhythm. Consistency, accuracy and precision as Ninjas, that where once the Private Juniors, trained to give all efforts for the welfare of the group, our batch really tries hard and exerts every amount of effort we can, in achieving high set of goals that are presented to us. Competitions only make us stronger and more united. The past was one hell of a memory, all those laughs, fights, all those decisions; those procrastinations, all of the friends and foes we gained and lost, all the triumph and defeat like it was a part of the big mans plan and we ninjas fall right in to place that everything that was done was planned to happen exactly at that moment.

The first lab-grown meat burger was cooked and eaten last August 6, 2013 in front of television cameras as the culmination of a five year experiment. The burger, which cost $332,000, was declared by two food tasters to be close to meat and noted the burgers absence of fat though very reserved in their judgment. The scientist behind the experiment, vascular biologist Mark Post of Maastricht University in the Netherlands, said that it was a very good start. The experiment was done to prove that in the future, meat might not have to be from the slaughtering of millions of animals and therefore be less harmful to the environment. According to research, lab-grown or cultured meat would result in 96% lower greenhouse gas emissions, 45% less energy, 99% lower land use and 96% lower water use than conventional meat; making it a potentially more environment-friendly way of consuming meat. Cultured meat is made from animal cells which are mixed with acids, lipids and other nutrients to start the growing process. The meat is then placed in a collagen gel scaffold to be able to arrange themselves into muscle tissues. It is exercised by sending electrical impulses to stimulate it thus, enhancing its flavor. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals(PETA) is supporting the effort to bring cultured meat to the market. The organization is offering a $1 million reward to the first scientist to market commercially lab-grown chicken meat which is indistinguishable from real chicken meat.

Many schools have switched from books to e-books and have integrated other technologies into curriculums, a move that has pros largely outweighing the cons. E-books can easily be carried through tablet computers, laptops or e-book readers sparing children of the burden of bringing heavy books to school everyday. Many of these e-books are also not the flat PDF files of before, but rather enriched as they incorporate different features such as built-in search and note-taking functions with media-rich content engaging students in learning. As the saying goes, nobody is perfect so it follows that nothing is perfect. E-books also have flaws. Without enough security on the tablet computers, these could backlash. In Los Angeles, public school students were given iPads for their classroom, but with a bit of tweaking, they start playing games instead. Thus, this could be a distraction and could interfere with studying. This flaw, however can have solutions in the form of tighter software securities and teachers' more strict regulations. On the price: Providing e-books, tablets, e-book readers and laptops to students will come with a hefty price tag, but in the long run this is actually cheaper than having to buy new books when a set has become outdated, which more often than not, are right after the books are printed. Its not just e-books which have been included in education. Power Naps With tons and tons of commitments and responsibilities needed to be acted out and finished; students are notorious for missing sleep. Taking power naps on weekends and after classes is a way to both rest and reward your body to lessen the load. Be warned though, that taking power naps isn't at all acceptable during class hours. 2. Music Music is proven to help people relax. This is because it gives harmony and balance within ourselves; a great stress management tool. Listening to music can wake you up and listening to songs that have slow melodies can help you relax and remove all the negative thoughts swirling in your world. 3. Staying organized Living in a cluttered place and studying in areas with a pile of books, tons of clutter and disarray of gadgets can cause stress. Being disorganized is like having a monkey on your back that keeps reminding you that you have problems and tasks needed to be finished. Studying and relaxing are generally less stressful if the area is not a magnet for further stress. 4. Ocean Unicorns; a treasure in the sea

A certain one-horned animal may be the cutest pet ever but the ocean has a more amazing answer, the best thing: theyre real. The narwhal, also called Monodon monoceros, is a type of whale commonly found in the Atlantic portion of the Arctic ocean. The males are highly prized for their 'horn', which is actually their left tooth which extrudes from their skull to about 8 feet depending on the whale and its age. There is no exact figure on narwhal populationestimates are about 40,000 to 70,000 but there is said to be no danger of extinction. Because of this, narwhals are continued to be hunted for their tusks as well as the top layer of their blubber and skin, which is made into muktuk. Because they follow their prey though narrow channels in the ice, even slight shifting could trap and kill them. Extinct arises to exist

Fancy a woolly mammoth in your backyard? How about seeing the striped Tasmanian tiger, the onceprolific passenger pigeon, the weird gastric-brooding frog , the wild goat Pyrenean ibex; also known as the bucardo or the magnificent wild cattle called aurochs? Then youre in luck, because it just might be possible to bring these dead species back. But how exactly do you bring back the dead? How do you conjure up the vanished species? Currently there are three probable methods to do so: cloning, genetic reconstruction and back breeding. Cloning is done by taking one of an animals cells and inserting its DNA into an egg that had been emptied of its own genetic material. DNA can remain intact for no more than about 6.8 million years. Genetic reconstruction would be more fitting in the de-extinction of some species. It would only require fragments of genetic material from hair, horn fur or feather things that you can often just find from museum specimens. Scientists would reassemble a complete genome. Then key bits of DNA are swapped with according bits of DNA from its relatives DNA to form stem cells, which are converted into germ cells. These eggs will hatch into the living species but will carry egg and sperm cells from the extinct species. Another method is back breeding where certain traits that are found in living species closely related to a vanished species are brought out through selective breeding over the course of many generations. With these technologies possibly being developed in the near future, it might not be a question of can we? anymore but one of should we? Humankind might have been the reason why these animals have gone extinct but if it is our moral obligation to bring them back, it is certainly a debatable matter.

How to prevent Procrastination

Procrastination, as we all know it, is the practice of carrying out less urgent activities in preference to more urgent ones. This is a huge dilemma for many people because our tendency to do assigned tasks at the last minute. Well, here are three simple yet easy ways on how to overcome one's struggle with procrastination. 1. Acquire a planner. When you are given a deadline for a certain assignment, make sure that you will write it down. Doing this would help you in organizing the things you need to prioritize and submit first. Make sure that the information you put is accurate and up-to-date for you wouldnt want to submit your work at the wrong place and at the wrong time, would you? 2. If you can do it now, then do it. Now that you have your planner, you probably know when the deadline is for a particular assignment. Dont be relieved because the deadline is still weeks away. A good way to diminish procrastination is to finish your duties as soon as possible. Youll never know once you delay something, your load might get stacked up and you will have a harder time accomplishing all you need to do. 3. Learn to say 'no'. Peer pressure is one of the main roots of procrastination. Because of the influence of some of your friends, you might set aside your responsibilities. If you have to pass a project and one of your friends is inviting you to hangout, courteously say no. Theyll surely understand it. Leisure and bonding can wait but responsibilities cannot. Once you successfully follow these steps, there is no doubt that you will excel in your performance in school. So what are you waiting for? Stop procrastinating and do what you have to do. Go and make a move. Now!

School Sports Commitee and planning boards have released a memorandum considering the age requirement and limit for student-athletes who will be competing in various inter-school sports meets. A variety of school records, documents and papers are required to ensure that school sports coordinators and coaches have accomplished the said requirements fully. However, reclaims about different players and teams ballooned on the day of the games as there were allegedly claims of certain rules being disobeyed by coaches more specifically the age requirement among student-athletes. In the highschool division of sports meets student athletes were required to be atleast 13 years of age and at most 16 to be able to take part in the said division. Even with the numerous school records that were said to be passed almost a month before the event, over-aged students were still seen in the court representing their teams. Circumstances like this should have been avoided since there was a huge time alloted for the counterchecking of documents and requirements thus the Sports Committee should have ssen the fault in the team records submitted to them. The requirement for a 13-16 age bracket was not being put to proper use since most of the schools were not taking the memorandum seriously. This over-aged players have been an issue for quite a long time now and still no actions have been done. Parents have also been disturbed by the fact that their children were competing against athletes who are way beyond the age limit. Age isnt just a number, its also a measure of skill since skill is enriched within years of training. Clearly disappointing, sports committees are not prioritizing the rules they have set for the events for a lot of rules were getting passed by and ignored, coordinators lets athletes and teams to compete even with unaccomplished papers allowing violators to get through.

The most exci-Teng UAAP finals

Next week, October 12, the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers mens basketball team will go on head to head with the De LaSalle University (DLSU) Green Archers in the third game of the championship rounds. Both teams are tied up, 1-1 and the 76th UAAP Basketball Champions title holder will be recognized next week. Everyone is excited especially the UST Growling Tigers whose last championship win was in the year 2006 during the basketball tournament of the 69th Season of the UAAP. Their coach, Pido Jarencio became very emotional when they won the first game of the championship rounds last Wednesday. Jarencio couldnt find words to describe how his Tigers won the match. Di ko talaga akalain na aabot pa kami, said the teary-eyed Jarencio. Maraming taong nagdududa sa kakayanan ko. The Tigers defeated the Archers with a sevenpoint advantage, 76-69 unfortunately their fate suddenly twisted when the DLSU Green Archers triumphed over them in game two, 70-77 this time the Archers gaining the sevenpoint advantage. Who wouldnt notice the rivalry between the two siblings, Jeron and Jeric Teng? Both are star players of their respective team, Jeron being in DLSU and Jeric in UST. They dont consider themselves as siblings on the court; they are competitors, battling for the title of the 76th UAAP Basketball Champions. Their parents wore two colored shirts, yellow and green, to represent that they are unbiased and that they support both teams carried by their children. Sometimes, when they are not competing against each other, the Tengs remain a great sense of brotherhood as they support each other in their games. Jeron wore a yellow statement shirt saying The Potent King Tiger Jeric Teng whenever he will watch the do-or-die games of the Tigers, on the other hand, his brother Jeric wore a white shirt that simply said Team Jeron. Despite of the rivalry between the two, they still treat themselves as brothers outside of the court and remains as a family.

Seniors triumph in Cheering Competition

This year's batch of Seniores had once again made it to the top as they were held champions in the most awaited part of the Intramurals, the annual cheer and dance competition, MES Covered Court, July 26. The highlight of the Intramurals competition developed roars, screams and cheers as students crowd the MES covered court to support their batch mates in the most exciting and heartpounding event which leads to head-to-head battles and exhilarating batch rivalry among the High School students. With their ninja inspired routine, the Seniors astonished the audience as well as the judges as they poured their all in a well thought presentation. The Senior Red Ninjas overall performance, with its ingenious and nifty dance moves made all their efforts worth the sweat and long after class practices proving themselves the rightful owner of the first place berth. The Sophies made an impression with their equally startling sports inspired routine as they painstakingly incorporated the use of a common Filipino sports equipment, arnis which gained them the 1st runner up award. The court transformed into a skatepark as the Mover Shaker Juniors performed their streetdance enthused cheerdance which kept the crowd glued to their seats boosting up the Juniors into 2nd runner up. With the Froshies jolly performance they moved the court and spectators getting them the 3rd runner up spot. The last day of the event, infused with immense competitions wrapped up the whole affair.

By: Joana Clarisse Merez The Senior Red Ninjas prevailing most of the minor and major events were crowned champions in the 13 Mater Ecclesiae School Intramurals, July 24-26. the fluidity of their routine and synchronization of steps. The group games greatly contributed to the win of the Red Ninjas as they were crowned champions in volleyball girls, volleyball boys and basketball. Every win in the said event was a great addition to the Seniors amusing win as they also aced in the individual events which also contributed to the coveted win making all efforts of the batch pay-off. Crowds roared as the excitement and anxiousness can no longer be contained as the event coordinators and facilitators tally the scores while heating up the already flaming event and gave the heart pounding announcement of this years champions. In the end, the Seniors claimed their most awaited win, dominating the other levels.

MES hosts 2013 Area Meet

By: Jonathan Brito A batallion of athletes arrive at MES grounds with the drive to prove something and to proudly represent their schools and areas in the 2013 Area Meet, September 4-6. Anually, schools go headto-head all with the hopes of bagging the championship trophy and to be the team to advance in the following Sports Meets. Equipped with proper training and school pride, all of these student athletes from various schools are ready for battle. Consisting of four areas that will fight for the championship and for the qualification for Divisional Meet, preparation to show their skills and talents to ace against their opponents are released and executed well on court. Before making the Area Meet more interesting, Caleb Adajar of IV-Prophet Elijah led the Oath of Sportsmanship to show comradeship among teammates and other athletes. Sir Vic Ricafort, MES Discipline Coordinator, discussed to the delegates the observation of proper behavior inside the school and inside ones game to help maintain the smooth flow of the event and to avoid any possible injury and conflicts. Sports coordinators also discussed the tentative schedule of the events as well as the respective venue for events. To show talents treasured by our school. Our broadcasting team led the intermission number followed by the 2nd placer in the Intramurals Cheering Competition and the overall champion, the Seniors.

Gaining the highest total points, Seniors overpowered their opponents as they battle it out for the title of 2013 over -all champions. Seniors surerely did not disappoint as they gave their all in various events and bagged trophies as they compete with great enthusiasm even under the hot and sticky weather. With full perseverance, the players performed their best at the MES Covered Court, July 26. Lara, Lavarez, Adajar, Monsanto and Nebres were the Seniors' First Five who got the first ball advantage and fires it directly to the basket leading the team with a great alas. In another action, Latagan, Zaraspe, Gonzaga, Piccio and Chavez of the Juniors labored in the first quarter finding a difficult time in chasing the score of the opponent. Navarro and Latagan being 3-point shooters of the Juniors helped the team to catch up on the score deficit. With the Seniors' techniques working like a welloiled machine, it was almost

Ecclesiaen goes overseas; brings home gold

By: Joana Clarisse Merez VALLEJO, California Standing proud on the International stage, Lance Aying proved his talent as he competes in the 33rd All California Taekwondo Competition, November 30. The event was participated by over 300 delegates from countries allover the world. Aying represented the Cherifer Taekwondo Philippines sponsored by Cherifer under the hands of Coach Fidel Cunanan. Battling it out against hard-hitting components, Aying stood undefeated taking over the top spot bringing home a gold medal in sparring. Aying is very proud to to have made it in the International stage and to represent the Philippines.

Mens badminton smashes to silver

By: Joana Clarisse Merez MES top badminton players (mens dvision) have once again manage to topple their opponents from different districts taking home silver medals in the 2013 Unit Meet, November 5-7, HP Badminton Court. Known as the Mythical Duo, Brix Timbalopez and Kirby Buenaventura, both from IV-Prophet Nehemiah, surely lived up to their names as they did not disappoint their school bringing home yet another medal in their name after competing in the Doubles competition Timbalopez and Buenaventura went home with silvers. Gabriel Maabo of Grade 8-Prophet Joshua, the youngest in the team, competed in the singles B against the University of Perpetual, Bian (High School). Maabo delivered strong hits taking down his opponent as he proves himself worthy of his first silver medal in his High School season. Surely well be seeing more of this fast-rising student athlete. Though already out of the tournament, the schools top three delivered a spectacular performance and represented MES with pride and honor.

Philippines skates to Winter Olympics By: Paolo Cortez Michael Christian Martinez, a 16 year-old skater from Muntinlupa City secures a 7th place spot in the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy, Oberstdorf, Germany last September 28, making him the first Filipino to rise to victory in the said event and to qualify for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Mart inez skated to the tune of Romeo and Juliet, making terrific stunts, spectacular riffs, and stupendous spins. The Triple Axel, Martinez main act, was the first properly executed by a Filipino in a figure skating event. Despite of the amazing acts in his routine, Martinez made few small errors, putting him down on the leading list. Filipinos support is a vital component for Martinez to succeed in the upcoming Winter Olympics.
