Executive Summary.

The Introduction to Magazine Design module was developed to educate collegiate students on the fundamentals of magazine design through the use of creative training delivery methods. It includes the basic principles of design, tutorials, examples of good and bad layouts, and the basic principles of design layout.

Introduction.
Problem Statement This module will educate collegiate students on the importance of using the principles of design while simultaneously creating a magazine spread and utilizing online resources. Goals Students will know and utilize the principles of both graphic design and magazine layout in order to create a magazine in Adobe InDesign.

Learners Analysis.
Who will Benefit: Those Purdue University Calumet students who actively participate and are willing to learn about the introduction of magazine design. Age Demographics: The Purdue University Calumet Student Age Demographics is predominately comprised of predominantly aged twenty-five or less. However, students aged forty-five plus account for a mere eight percent.

Experience with Technology: Students within the Introduction to Magazine Design module will need to be comfortable and familiar with the use of technology. Students will need to be able to operate a web browser, utilize Adobe Illustrator, utilize Adobe Photoshop, proper saving, printing, and file formats. As the Purdue Calumet Student demographics indicate, there majority of students are those twenty-five or younger. This correlates with research on older adults and e-learning in relation to technology. A study by Rod Githens found older workers were less inclined to support technology implementation (Githens). While there is still a small percentage of students that are aged at forty-five plus I will be working with a young crowd who will need to be inclined to support the implementation of technology.

Ethnicity Demographics: Students within the Introduction to Magazine Design module will be of mixed ethnicities. Purdue University Calumet is home to foreign exchange students, African Americans, Hispanics, Caucasian, Indian, and more. Educational Background: Students will have a high school degree or GED. They will have passed the Purdue University Calumet application and screening process.

General Interests: Students interested in graphic design and visual arts are quite generally visual learners. They often have interests in technology and innovations in that industry. Creative individuals generally enjoy music, electronic games, movies, and television. While these interests may seem broad, they essentially communication strategies that implement new and different graphic, visual, or dynamic components of which visually stimulate and inspire. General Characteristics: Students in introduction level courses are generally freshman, new transfers, or those taking a course outside of their major discipline.

The following pages outline the objectives from a unit on the introduction of magazine design.
