1 Diagram 1.1 shows the apparatus set-up for an experiment to study the hardness of pure copper by using 1.0 kg weight.

The experiment was carried out according to the following steps:

: A steel ball bearing is taped onto a copper block. : A 1 kg weight is hung at a height of 50 cm above the copper block as shown in Diagram 1.1.

: The weight is allowed to drop onto the steel ball bearing. : The diameter of the dent made on the copper block is measured. : Steps 1 to 4 are repeated on two other parts of the copper block in order to obtain an average value for the diameter of dents formed.

Diagram 2.1 shows the apparatus set-up to construct the Electrochemical Series. The voltage produced when copper and magnesium electrodes are dipped into the copper(II) sulphate solution is measured. The experiment is repeated by replacing magnesium with aluminium and zinc.

The experiment is repeated using two copper electrodes dipped in copper(II) sulphate solution. The voltmeter does not show any reading. Explain why.
