We are excited for the 13th Annual Pediatric Conference.

We wanted to tell you a little

about each topic and the presenter. It is Sept. 17, 18 2009 at Shriners Hospitals for
Children in Salt Lake City. We are offering great CE credit at a very inexpensive cost.

Mike Swinyard MD will kick off the conference speaking on three Endocrinological
emergencies we should all be prepared for. Dr. Swinyard is an excellent resource to
the healthcare community and has twice been the recipient of the “Excellence in
Teaching Award. Department of Pediatrics. University of Utah School of Medicine, 1995-
1996, 2000-2001.

We will then hear from Mike Lloyd MD who will address the topic of Migraines in
children and adolescents. He is a clinical instructor in pediatric neurology for the
University Of Utah School Of Medicine and a Co-Director for the Pediatric Multiple
Sclerosis Clinic.

Next we will have the opportunity to hear from Jacques D’Astous MD who is an
orthopaedic surgeon with Shriners Hospitals for Children. He is also a professor with
the University Of Utah School Of Medicine, Department of Surgery. He will address
common orthopaedic pediatric concerns.

After lunch we will have the opportunity to hear from Julieanne Schiefelbein NNP-BC
who is going to address the concerns of healthcare providers and premature infants
following discharge from the NICU. Julieanne is a NNP in PCMC’s NICU and a member
of the Flight Nurses for Life Flight.

We wondered where childhood cancers were at in 2009 and so we asked Jenny Wright
MD to address the question. Dr. Wright is certified both in internal medicine and
pediatrics and is a practicing oncologist and hematologist at PCMC. She too serves as
an associate professor for the University Of Utah School Of Medicine.

Wrapping up Friday will be radiologist Jeffrey Prince MD. There are so many types of
imaging available and we all want to order the correct imaging for our clients.
Additionally we want to spend the healthcare dollar appropriately. Dr. Prince is the
Vice Chairman of Medical Imaging at PCMC and an Adjunct Associate Professor at the
University Of Utah School Of Medicine, Department of Radiology.
Friday we will spend the morning updating our skills in caring for the type one
diabetic. There has been an explosion in the numbers of new type one diabetics in
the intermountain area and the specialists are asking us to help provide care for
these individuals sharing the care and not just referring them for care.

We will learn from Mary Murray MD who is the Department chair at PCMC for Diabetes
and a professor for the University Of Utah School Of Medicine, Department of
Pediatrics in Endocrinology will update us on what is happening with Type One
Diabetes Management. Dr. Murray also serves on the Utah Health Department
advisory board for the Utah Diabetes Prevention and Control program.

Trina Brown CPNP, CDE a member of our Conference Committee and a PNP with the
Utah Diabetes Center will address the day to day management of diabetes, how to
manage the numbers and what to do when these children are sick. Trina just
completed her certification as a certified diabetes educator and we look forward to
learning from her.

Do you ever wonder what to tell the schools in relationship to caring for your Type I
Diabetic children? Lucie Jarrett APRN, CDE has all of the answers for us. What about
diets, what about medication, what about activities, should there be any limitations?
Lucie serves as a clinical educator for the Diabetics Clinic and Education Program for
PCMC.

Taking a totally different direction we will next learn from Julia Lidgard SLP-CCC who
will address communication disorders across childhood and adolescence. Julia serves
as an Adjunct Instructor for the University of Utah Department of Communication
Sciences and Disorders. Julia practices at The Children’s Center. She will provide
guidelines and red flags in watching for communication disorders.

Following lunch we will have the opportunity of being taught by Phillip Baese MD,
Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist at the University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute.
He will address the issue of depression and what we as providers need to know to
help these clients. Dr. Baese will have an extended amount of time to teach and
answer questions.
Our concluding conference speaker will be Michael Puchalski MD addressing us on
current cardiology issues using dynamic illustrations of congenital heart defects and
their associated concerns. Dr. Puchalski also serves as the Director of Cardiovascular
MRI at PCMC and as Coordinator of Congenital Cases at the University of Utah.

Following our speakers we will conclude with drawing for door prizes. We hope to see
you there and support the Utah Chapter of NAPNAP and extend a warm welcome to
the PA’s that share a pediatric focus.
