MA025: Foundation Statistics Assessment 3

Please hand in your assessment to the SMSAS general oce by 12.00 on Tuesday 19th February (late submissions will be awarded a mark of zero). Show all your working in each question.
1. An average of seven accidents occur in a week on a particular stretch of road. (a) Let X represent the number of accidents that occur in a week. (i) Write down Pr(X = x). (ii) Calculate Pr(X = 2). (iii) Calculate Pr(5 X < 8). (b) What is the probability that more than two accidents occur in two weeks? (3 marks) (total 10 marks) 2. The pmf of the random variable X is given in the table below. X Pr(X = x) (a) Calculate the value of a. (b) Construct a table to show the cdf of X . (c) Calculate Pr(X 3). (d) Show that E(X ) = 2.75 and calculate Var(X ). (e) Use graph paper to draw the pmf and cdf of X . 0 a 1 2a 2 0.30 3 0.25 4 0.20 5 2a (2 marks) (2 marks) (2 marks) (6 marks) (5 marks) (2 marks) (2 marks) (3 marks)

(f) Suppose eight values are observed from a distribution with the same pmf as X . Let Y represent how many of those eight values are the number 2. Show that Pr(Y = 4) = 0.1361. (3 marks) (total 20 marks) 3. The random variable W has pmf given by Pr(W = w) = (a) Show that k = 30. (b) Calculate Pr(W 2.7). The random variable U has pmf given by Pr(U = u) = (c) What shape is the pmf of U ? 1/4 u {1, 2, 3, 4} 0 otherwise. (1 mark) w2 /k w {1, 2, 3, 4} 0 otherwise. (3 marks) (3 marks)

(d) Assuming that W and U are independent random variables, calculate Pr(W = 3 U = 4). (3 marks) (total 10 marks)

4. A medical practice screens a random sample of its patients for a certain condition which is known to be present in 2% of the population (therefore each patient has a probability of 0.02 of having the condition). (a) If the practice screens 10 patients, what is the probability that (i) none of the 10 patients have the condition? (ii) at least two of the 10 patients have the condition? (b) If the practice screens 300 patients, (i) calculate the mean number of patients that will have the condition. (2 marks) (ii) use a suitable approximation to show that the probability of no more than three patients having the condition is 0.1512. (3 marks) (iii) what is the probability that exactly four people have the condition, given that at least one person does? (6 marks) (c) Suppose the sample size is 300, as in part (b), and let event A occur when no more than three patients have the condition. Let Pr(B ) = 0.6583 and Pr(A B ) = 0.0771, for some event B . Calculate the probability that neither of the events A or B occur. (4 marks) (total 20 marks) (2 marks) (3 marks)
