Customized Solution Ideal for Famous Medical Research Center

Only Nu Flow has the innovative technologies, decades of experience and the shrewd expertise to create customized solutions for our customers. By using both of our non-destructive pipe lining technologies, we completed the project to the customers satisfaction and prevented disruption to this famous medical research campus. Project: Use dual technologies to rehabilitate leaking fire suppression pipes in-place. Customer: A property management company for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a nonprofit biomedical research and science education center, and the second wealthiest medical research foundation in the world. Site: The walkway in between two dormitory buildings at Howard Hughes Medical Institutes research campus, located in Chevy Chase, Maryland. System: A fire suppression pipe line that consists of 4" diameter ductile iron pipes. This pipe line is located beneath slab in the dormitory buildings, paving stone and a walkway. Problem: As a result of age, the pipe line cracked and leaked. Since the pipe line is located beneath walkways and residential buildings, the property management company looked for a solution that would cause as little disruption as possible to the busy research center.

We were the only company that could provide a no-dig solution for this particular project.
- Paul Eaves, Regional Manager, Nu Flow

Circumvention: If the customer had chosen a traditional repair method, such as a repipe or reroute, it would have caused a large expense and inconvenience for the medical center. Contractors would have to dig up units inside the dormitories, as well as outdoor sidewalks and landscaping in order to access the pipes. The old pipes, concrete and surrounding dirt would be put in trucks and sent to landfills. Once new pipes would be put in place, the dirt, concrete, flooring and landscaping would have to be ordered and installed. This process would take several months and would prove to be a very disruptive process. Solution: The property management called upon Nu Flow to rehabilitate the underground pipe line because of our non-invasive technology. Due to the severity of the cracks in the pipe line, Nu Flow technicians created a completely unique solution for this customers aging infrastructure problem. First, a structural liner was installed using existing access points at both ends of the underground pipe line. This ensured all breaches in pipe were covered to prevent future leaks. After the liner cured, our patented Nu Line system was installed to prevent corrosion and other failures from occurring. Using blown-in technology, this epoxy coating was applied to the interior of the pipes and onto the newly inserted structural liner. Digging was avoided during the entirety of the project, and there was not any disruption to the research facilitys normal operations.
