MARKING CRITERIA FOR SECTION B (Summary)

Content points: 1. protect plants from disease and damage. 2. reduce inflammation in the arteries that lead to the heart. 3. help the opening of blood vessels 4. reduce blood clots which cause strokes and heart attacks. 5. contain more antioxidants than any other chocolate 6. makes you happy because it releases endorphins 7. protect against cancer and raises good cholesterol levels.

NOTE: 1. Spelling of the compulsory words must be correct. 2. If a student rephrases the compulsory words, spelling of key words need not necessary be correct but the meaning must not be distorted. BEFORE MARKING 1. Count the number of words. If students use the Introductory words given (10 words), put a single stroke (/) after the 10th word of the opening line and count up to 50. Put another single stroke (/) after the 50th word. 2. If students do not begin their summary with the introductory words given, put a single stroke before the 1st word and count up to 50 words. Put another single stroke after the 50th word. e.g. / Human activities have caused 50

3. If the number of words used to write the summary does not exceed 50, count and write the actual number of words on the bottom right hand corner. 4. If a student writes the title for the summary, e.g. why marine creatures are slowly dying, ignore the title when counting the number of words for the summary.

NOTE : Do not penalize the students for any omission, errors or incompleteness in the introductory words, or for not using the Introductory words.

WHILE MARKING 1. Read the summary between the two boundaries that you have identified. No marks will be given for anything that is written outside these boundaries. 2. Read, number and circle each valid point where it occurs according to the list of points given in the mark scheme. Then, write the marks in the corresponding space on the right hand corner. For example : if you identify Content Point 1 in a line, circle the Content Point 1and put it above the point stated, then award 1 in the right hand column. If you identify Content Points 2 and 3 in a line, circle the Content Points 2 & 3 and put them above the point stated, then award 1, 1 in the right hand column. 3. Indicate all the mistakes that appear in the summary by using the marking symbols. Assess the quality of writing based on the band descriptors.

POST MARKING 1. Count the total number of marks given for content. The maximum number of marks must not exceed 5. 2. Next, give marks for Language. Add these marks to the content marks. 3. Write the total number of marks obtained in the right hand column of the paper as follow: Content Language Total : : : 5 5 10

4. If candidates do wholesale lifting, identify marks for CONTENT (C) within the first 50 words. Award only 1 mark for Language (L)
