Specifications for Tank External Floor Coating and Annular Plate Sealing

Tank External Floor-to-Shell Protection and Annular Plate Sealing

1.0 SUMMARY 1.1 This specification is intended for the protection of storage tanks external floorto-shell joint (by applying epoxy and polyurethane coatings) and the sealing of annular plate (by applying an elastomeric polyurethane sealant). The corrosion of shell-to-floor external joint and water seepage in annular plate are few of the causes of tank failure. This specification will mitigate if not eliminate the two failure modes of storage tanks.

MATERIAL SPECIFICATION 2.1 Coating The coating system is as follows: Surface Prep: Touch Up: Sweep blast / high pressure water jetting Two component surface tolerant high build polyamide cured epoxy/primer/coating Approved Brand: Sigmacover 630 (Sigma) Jotomastic 87 Aluminum (Jotun) Full Coat: Two component surface tolerant high build polyamide cured epoxy/primer/coating Approved Brand: Sigmacover 630 (Sigma) Jotomastic 87 Grey 38 (Jotun) Top Coat: Two-component high build polyurethane Approved Brand: Sigmadur 188 (Sigma) Hardtop AS Grey 38 (Jotun) The epoxy primer and polyurethane topcoat are both surface tolerant coatings for lower grade of steel preparation. The coating system is applicable for atmospheric and marine conditions and is compatible with various aged coatings. Polyurethane has outstanding color and gloss retention and is non-chalking and non-yellowing. 2.2 Sealant The sealing system is as follows: Surface Prep : Primer Backer rod Sealant : : : Sweep blast Sealant Adhesive primer Approved Brand: Sika Primer 206 G+P Backing cord, elastic polyurethane tape Polyurethane-base joint sealant Approved Brand: Sikaflex 15 LM

The joint sealant is a one-component, gun grade, polyurethane-base material. It is applicable in vertical, overhead, and recess horizontal joints. The sealant cures under the influence of atmospheric moisture to form an elastomeric substance.

APPLICATION 3.1 External Floor-to-Shell Coating Sigma Coating Coating System Surface Prep Touch up Coat 2nd Coat Top Coat : : : : Sweep Blast Sigmacover 630, 100 microns Sigmacover 630, 125 microns Sigmadur 188, 75 microns

Surface Preparation Metal surface must be free from scale, corrosion, and all contaminants such as oil, grease, dirt, soluble salts, marking and old loose coatings. Touch-up and 2nd Coat Immediately after surface preparation, apply touch-up coat with 100 microns DFT. Afterwards, apply 2nd coat with 125 microns DFT. Top Coat Lastly, apply topcoat with 75 microns DFT. Testing The final coating system shall be free from obvious defects and shall be tested. All dry film thickness limits as specified shall be strictly adhered to. The film thickness shall be checked with calibrated film thickness gauges. If the film thickness does not meet the specified value an additional coat shall be applied. 3.2 Annular Plate Sealing Sika Brands Sealing System Surface Prep : Primer Backer rod Sealant : : : Sweep blast Sika Primer 206 G+P Backing cord, elastic polyurethane tape Sikaflex 15 LM

Surface Preparation The joint and adjacent substrate must be clean, dry, sound and free of surface contaminants. Remove all traces of dust, laitance, grease, oils, curing compounds, and foreign particles by sweep blasting. Blow joint free of dust using compressed air line equipped with an oil trap.

Primer Shake or stir primer well before using. Apply to dry, clean, oil free surface with a brush, dauber or spray. Primer must be tack free prior to sealant installation. Backer Rod On the opening, place backer rod and push it gently using a hard roller. This is to ensure even pressure and proper pressing of the wet sealant. Sealant Application The recommended application temperatures of sealant is between 4 - 38C. Cut plastic tip on cartridge to desired joint size and then puncture the airtight seal at base of tip. Place nozzle of gun into bottom of joint and fill entire joint. Keeping the nozzle deep in the sealant, continue with a steady flow of sealant preceding nozzle to avoid air entrapment. Also, avoid overlapping of sealant since this also entraps air. Proper joint design for moving joints is 2:1 width to depth ratio, with a recommended 6 mm (1/4 in) minimum and 13 mm (1/2 in) maximum depth of sealant. Cleanup Uncured material can be removed with Sika Equipment Cleaner/Epoxy Thinner or Sika Hand Cleaner. Cured material can only be removed mechanically.
