Acknowledgement and Inspiration

Steven M. Jacobs was with Northrop Grumman Mission Systems in Carson, California.
He managed a team of programmers building customized GUI applications, e-commerce, web portals and web-based solutions for a variety of government and commercial customers.

He has been an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Computer Science at USC for over 17 years where he developed their graduate courses in user interface design and human performance engineering.
Mr. Jacobs has chaired workshops and a panel session at ACM SIGCHI "CHI" conferences. He was an original member of the Editorial Board of ACM Interactions magazine. He presented a Software Process Improvement Network (SPIN) panel entitled Human Computer Interface Design Teams: 3 Integration of Human Factors and Software Practitioners.

Definition of Human Computer Interaction All aspects of system design that affect system use

What is HCI?
The development of a human beings interaction with a computer system
Multi-disciplinary

systems analysts information architects web designers and developers webmasters usability and human factors specialists graphic artists applied behavioral psychologists etc.

The design of computers and related devices for users to be able to use them in the way that is seamless with respect to their everyday work
11

Motivation for Increased Interest in HCI

Use of computers in life critical systems - Hospitals, E.R., etc. - Nuclear reactor, air traffic control, utilities - Emergency (911) dispatching, fire, police Need for high-volume commercial systems - Banking/insurance/reservations/credit card - Inventory control/sales/billing

Use by a diverse population with limited training

- Office automation - Home/personal/educational computing Opportunity to enhance human intellect - Artist/movie effects workstations - Decision support/expert systems - Information retrieval - Simulations and training
12

Problems with User Interfaces

User interface accounts for a large portion of life-cycle costs - application algorithms 40% - dialogue management 40% - presentation 20% UI development is extremely labor intentive UIs require frequent and extensive modifications due to not understanding all interactions until the system is complete development Modifications to the UI are difficult with the UI and the application are tightly interwoven It is sometimes difficult to take advantage of new I/O technologies if they dont match the current model
13

Reducing Problems with User Interfaces

Separate concern of user interface specification and execution from the rest of the system concepts - separate the algorithmic portion of a system from the interactive portion
- allow for independent development of the application and the user interface

Provide an integrated set of tools which support incremental specification and execution of the interface Use a good User Interface design process

14

Serving the User (User Friendly---Ease of Use)

For a specified: - set of tasks
- user community

We can measure: - time to learn

- speed of performance - rate of human errors subjective satisfaction
system quality

- product/service quality - sales - human retention over time
