Into the Dark Water
The Story of Three Officers and PT-109
John J. Domagalski Made famous by her final commanding officer, John F. Kennedy, PT-109 is one of the most celebrated warships in American history. However, a full chronicle of PT-109s wartime story has been lacking. Behind the familiar account of the future president and the boats violent demise is the little-known record under two previous officers during the swirling battles around Guadalcanal. In these nocturnal fights, when the Japanese navy was at its apex, Americas fast-boat flotillas would sally out to probe enemy strength, vying with enemy destroyers, who were similarly roaming the waters. It was constant hit-and-run and dodging between searchlights across Iron Bottom Sound, as the PT-boats darted in among the enemy fleet. Bryant Larson and Rollin Westholm preceded Kennedy as commanders of PT-109, and their fights with the brave ship and its crew hold second to none in the chronicles of US Navy daring. As the battles moved on across the Pacific the PT-boat flotillas gained confidence, even as the Japanese, too, learned lessons in how to destroy them. Under its third and final commander, Kennedy, PT-109 came a cropper as a Japanese destroyer suddenly emerged from a dark mist and rammed it in half. Two crewmen were killed immediately but Kennedy was able to shepherd his wounded and others to refuge. His gallantry cannot resist retelling, yet the courage of the books previous commanders have not till now seen the light of day. $29.95 288 pages 6 x 9 16pp photos April 2014 hardback 978-1-61200-234-7 eISBN: 978-1-61200-2354

The Battle of the Bridges
The 504 Parachute Infantry Regiment in Operation Market Garden
Frank Van Luteren Operation Market Garden has been recorded as a complete Allied failure in World War II, an overreach that resulted in an entire airborne division being destroyed at its apex. However, within that operation were episodes of heroism that still remain unsung. On September, 17, 1944, the 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, floated down across the Dutch countryside and proceeded to fight their way to vital bridges to enable the Allied offensive to go forward. The Germans knew the importance of the bridge over the Waal River at Nijmegen as well as James Gavin and his 82nd troopers did. Thus began a desperate fight for the Americans to seize it. The Germans would not give, however, and fought tenaciously in the town and fortified the bridge. On September 20 Gavin turned his paratroopers into sailors and conducted a daylight amphibious assault across the Waal River to secure the north end of the highway bridge in Nijmegen. German machine guns and mortars boiled the water on the crossing, but somehow a number of paratroopers made it to the far bank. Their ferocity thence rolled up the German defenses, and by the end of day the bridge had fallen. $32.95 336 pages 6 x 9 16pp photos June 2014 hardback 978-1-61200-232-3 eISBN: 978-1-61200-2330 This book draws on previously unpublished sources to shed light on the exploits of the Devils in Baggy Pants by Dutch author and historian Frank van Lunteren. A native of Arnhem, the author draws on nearly 130 interviews he personally conducted with veterans of the 504th, plus Dutch civilians and British and German soldiers, who here tell their story for the first time.

Hammer of the North
The Rise and Decline of Sweden as a Military Superpower
Henrik O. Lunde There has been a recent trend in history to interpret the rise and fall of great powers in terms of economics, demographics, or geography. This is not always true because sometimes military skill can propel a nation to prominence, if it is simply able to crush its opponents on a battlefield. No better example arises than that of Sweden beginning in the 17th century, which held supremacy over northern Europe for 100 years without any technological, geographic or demographic advantages. This book describes how the Swedes arrived in continental Europe during the 30 Years War, under their king Gustavus Adolfus. Just in time to roll back the reactionary Catholic tide and buttress the Lutherans, the Swedes proved more innovative in battle than their opponents. This horrific war still exists in collective memory as the worst travail in German history, even worse than the world wars; however along with the salvation of Protestantism the emergence of the Swedes as a power to be reckoned with meant new geopolitical complications for the existing powers of Europe. Adolphus was eventually killed in battle, but a successor, Charles XII, renewed aggression as he found that no army on the Continent could stand against his legions. As later military leaders would find, however, the conquest of Russia comprised a considerable overreach, and Charles was eventually trapped and defeated deep in the Ukraine, at Poltava. In this work renowned military historian Henrik O. Lunde unveils a fascinating chapter in the foundation of Western history that is seldom seen or recognized by English or American readers.

The Lieutenant Dont Know
One Marines Story of Warfare and Combat Logistics in Afghanistan
Jeffrey D. Clement In our wars since 2001 the term front line has long since lost its meaning, and the true combats have waged throughout the countries weve invaded, especially along the supply routes. Our opponents have not been able to stand with conventional forces, but instead attack inside our lines, their presence everywhere, if not always discernible. Into this mix of behind-the-lines attacks, combat logistics have played a larger role than ever. When he joined the Marines, Jeff Clement was not a high-speed, top-secret recon guy. A logistician instead, he led combat convoys across treacherous terrain in southern Afghanistan through frequent enemy attacks in order to resupply US and British positions. As such he and his vehicles were a constant target of the resistance, and each movement was a travail, often accompanied by thundering blasts as the insurgents paved their way with IEDs. Each movement was fraught with danger, even as each objective had to be met. As a Marine Corps lieutenant, he deployed to Afghanistan twice, and always found a learning curve, as men previously on the ground were more savvy, and the insurgents, there for the duration, were savvier still. $32.95 264 pages 6 x 9 16pp photos April 2014 hardback 978-1-61200-248-4 eISBN: 978-1-61200-2491 The Lieutenant Dont Know provides a refreshing look at the nitty-gritty of what our troops have been dealing with in Afghanistan, from the perspective of a young officer who was perfectly willing to learn, and also take responsibility for his units in a confusing war where combat was not merely on the front, but all around, and looking over all their roads.
BAC SI
A Green Beret Medics War in Vietnam
Jerry Krizan Robert Dumont During the Vietnam War, U.S. Army Special Forces A-Teams were deployed to isolated outposts in the remote areas of South Vietnam. Their job was to recruit, train, and house members of the indigenous population while molding them into combat-ready fighting units. A-Teams consisted of up to 12 Green Beret soldiers who were experts in both combat and their individual military specialties. The role of the indigenous units was to provide border security, counter the Viet Cong insurgency in the countryside, provide intelligence on enemy troop-strength and when necessary engage elements of the invading North Vietnamese Army. Bac Si (the Vietnamese term for medic) is the story of Sgt. Jerry Krizan who was assigned to Special Forces Camp A-331 in the III Corps tactical zone, only 10 miles from the Cambodian border. Because of its proximity to a major north-south NVA infiltration route, there were constant enemy troop movements through the camps area of operations and A-331 itself came under attack on more than one occasion. $32.95 240 pages 6 x 9 16pp photos May 2014 hardback 978-1-61200-246-0 eISBN: 978-1-61200-2477 The author meantime needed to accompany patrols and probes into enemy territory, not only prepared to provide aid but fight as a soldier if the squad was ambushed, or itself chose to attack. In this small-unit warfare against expert enemy, U.S. soldiers had to survive as best they could, with their only succor a Huey, and meantime on the ground by themselves against unknown opposition.

Mercenaries
Putting the World to Rights with Hired Guns
Al J. Venter Mercenaries have been a part warfare for centuries, and though the names have changed, continue to play a part in global military conflicts. In todays world these soldiers for hire are an attractive alternative when Western governments are reluctant to put their militaries at risk for obscure causes that would otherwise be difficult to explain to their electorates. In this book noted author and foreign correspondent Al Venter provides a fascinating look at modern merc actions in the Middle East and Africa. From brushfire wars in the Congo to outright genocides in Biafra, highly skilled mercenaries were called upon to fight for order, and also for a living. Whether facing fanatics in Somalia or revolutionaries in Rhodesia, staving off cannibals in Sierra Leone or assisting a civil war in Angola the mercs put their lives on the line for a cause. Many mercenaries freelanced, but under talented freebooting leaders some groups became crack outfits. South Africas Executive Outcomes became a legend in its own time like a quasi-military itself, as it dispatched fighters throughout the continent. Like an ad hoc Foreign Legion, fighters came from all countries around the globe to participate in the combats. In the US, the publisher of Soldier of Fortune magazine organized repeated expeditions from Laos to Peru. In Afghanistan the renowned helicopter gunship pilot Nellis has recently lent his skills after almost singlehandedly defeating gruesome insurgencies in Africa.

Mallochs Spitfire
The Story and Restoration of PK350
Nick Meikle Spitfire PK350 is the only late-mark Spitfire to have ever been restored to full flying status. She first flew as a restored aircraft on 29 March 1980 at the hands of one John McVicar Jack Malloch. By then a legend in his adopted country Rhodesia, Malloch had been entrusted by the hierarchy of the Rhodesian Air Force to restore SR64, as she was then known. In two and half years, Jack Malloch and his trusted engineers completely restored SR64 to flying condition. The fact that she was fitted with a propeller made by a German company added a sweet irony to a project that had to contend with sanctions imposed by Britain and highlighted the enterprising spirit of the team. This was possible because Malloch had built up a charter airfreight company that assumed different guises to bypass sanctions. Mallochs network facilitated his ability to manage such a project in his quest to fulfill a dream: to restore and once again fly a Spitfire which he had flown in the RAF during the Second World War. Fascinating insights are revealed in this account. From the test pilot who first flew her as PK350 on 25 July 1945 to the true ownership and vision for SR64 as a restored aircraft, the reader is taken on a journey through the aircrafts complete life. For two years PK350 delighted those fortunate enough to see her fly, mostly round Salisbury airport. Then, on what was planned to be its last flight, Mallochs Spitfire never returned to base.

Amphibious Warfare
Strategy and Tactics from Gallipoli to Iraq
Ian Speller Christopher Tuck $34.95 192 pages 7.25 x 9.75 150 b/w photos maps April 2014 hardback 978-1-78274-140-4 Landing on a hostile beach is one of the most ancient and difficult forms of warfare. It requires unparalleled levels of planning, organization, coordination and cooperation between the services. After the disasters of Gallipoli and Zeebrugge in the World War I, amphibious operations reached their maturity in World War II. Since 1945, expeditionary naval forces have set off for a wide range of destinations. In the post-Cold War era, amphibious warfare has reached new heights of importance in its ability to intervene rapidly in crisis situations. Rather than following a narrative history, Amphibious Warfare takes the approach of building up the stages of an amphibious campaign, illustrating each with case studies. From planning and preparation to reaching landing zones, Amphibious Warfare offers the complete picture of the people, strategy and tactics, ships and landing craft, tanks and aircraft, as well as the assaults involved.

Through compelling narrative Frank Dell shares his unique story with honesty and candor, finding humor and camaraderie. He emerges from his traumatic experiences with heightened respect for the courageous Dutch families who risked death to shelter him and other Allied airmen.

Otto Henning $34.95 6 x 9 16pp of plates January 2014 hardback 978-1-84832-691-0 The armored reconnaissance units were the spearheads of the Panzer divisions, moving stealthily ahead of the tanks to locate the enemy. Otto Hennings armored car unit of the elite Panzer-Lehr-Division fought throughout the campaigns in the West in 1944 and 1945, arriving in Normandy a few weeks before DDay and finally surrendering in the Ruhr pocket in mid-April 1945. Henning describes the difficulties reconnaissance forces faced in the close terrain of the Normandy bocage and the threat posed by the Allies complete control of the air. He saw the devastation wrought by Michael Wittmanns lone Tiger tank against the British 7th Armored Division at Villers Bocage, and experienced the chaos and demoralization of the Germans retreat across France. After the Battle of the Bulge and the final fighting in western Germany, Henning surrendered and endured terrible conditions in a prisoner-ofwar camp until he escaped in 1947. This is a fascinating and often harrowing account of the final campaigns in Western Europe, and exposes the little-known scandal of the treatment of German prisoners-of-war even after the war had ended.

German Special Forces of World War Two
James Lucas $24.95 6 x 9 32 b/w plates May 2014 paperback 978-184832-737-5 This gripping book tells the story of Germanys Special Forces military, naval and aerial during the Second World War. Although capable of stunning achievements against all the odds, the absence of proper coordination and planning resulted in a lost opportunity for Germany. Units were raised ad hoc, as an increasingly desperate response to Germanys weakening position and the growing strength of the Allies. Packed with detail and incisive analysis, this is one of the most accessible accounts of Germanys Special Forces and their efforts to stave off impending military defeat.
Battle Group
German Kamfgruppen Action in World War Two
James Lucas $19.95 6 x 9 32 b/w plates June 2014 paperback 978-1-84832-738-2 The German army in World War II sought victories in a succession of short campaigns. Battle groups were created from disparate units to undertake an operation; it was the armys skill in combining superior numbers, aggressive tactics and the commanders ability to exploit the situation on the ground which brought success on the battlefield. The actions described cover all theaters of the war. It covers operations in the first years when Wehrmacht forces defeated the armies of one country after another, to the years after Stalingrad and Africa as they moved towards defeat.

His book, The Hut Six Story, was the first to reveal not only how they broke the codes, but how it was done on an industrial scale.

The Germans Defeat The Allies, June 1944
Peter Tsouras $19.95 6 x 9 16 pages of b/w plates November 2013 paperback 978-1-84832723-8 It is June 1944. The Allied armies are poised for the full-scale invasion of Fortress Europe. Across the Channel, the vaunted Wehrmacht lies waiting for the signs of invasion, ready for the final battle. What happens next is well-known to any student of modern history. The outcome could easily have been very different, as Peter Tsouras shows in this masterful and devastating account in which plans, missions and landings go horribly wrong. Tsouras firmly bases his narrative on facts but introduces minor adjustments at the opening of the campaign-the repositioning of a unit, bad weather and misjudged orders-and examines their effect as they gather momentum and impact on all subsequent events. Without deviating from the genuine possibilities of the situation, he presents a scenario that keeps the reader guessing and changes the course of history.
JG 26
Top Guns of the Luftwaffe
Donald Caldwell $50.00 6 x 9 February 2014 hardback 978-1-84832-746-7 JJagdgeschwader 26, the German elite fighter unit, was more feared by the Allies than any other Luftwaffe group. Based on extensive archival research in Europe, personal combat diaries and interviews with more than 50 surviving pilots, Caldwell has assembled a superb day-to-day chronicle of JG 26 operations, from its first air victory in 1939 to its final combat patrol in 1945. A microcosm of World War II exists in the rise and fall of this famous fighter wing. For the first two years of the war it was an even match between the Spitfires and Hurricanes of the Royal Air Force and the Luftwaffe's Messerschmitts and Focke Wulfs; but the scales tipped in favor of the Allies in 1943 with the arrival of the Eighth US Air Force and its peerless P-51 Mustang. The book has been endorsed by the top fighter commanders of three air forces: the RAF (Johnnie Johnson), the USAAF (Hub Zemke), and the Luftwaffe (Adolf Galland) and is considered essential reading for anyone interested in the aerial war of 194145.

Frederick Sleath $32.95 6.25 x 9.5 May 2014 hardback 978-184832-745-0 Although it reads as a novel, Sniper Jackson can be justifiably viewed as faction weaving true events around a mythical character. This was a commonplace method of writing at a time when many soldiers did not want individuals or events in their books to be identified, and used pseudonyms to conceal their identities. Sleaths work bears the hallmarks of personal experience, in particular those small details of trench life and the insights into the close-knit camaraderie commonly found in specialist units that only those who have experienced it could know.

Former Anglican Army Chaplains in Inter-War Britain
Linda Parker $79.95 272 pages 6 x 9 10 b/w photos June 2014 hardback 978-1-909982-25-3 The Anglican chaplains who served in the Great War were changed by their experience of total war. This book argues that in the interwar years the impact of chaplains was enhanced by their experiences in an unprecedented global conflict, which gave their actions more moral authority than would otherwise been the case. This question of the impact of former chaplains is considered in the context of debates about the effect that the war had on British society as a whole and on the Church of England. The inter-war years have been described as the long peace as the chaplains were coming to terms with the way the Great War had affected their lives and ministries. In the twenty years after their wartime chaplaincies, former chaplains had gone to fulfill the hopes and aspirations articulated on their return from the front and could claim to have contributed greatly to both developments in the Anglican Church and in wider society.

In Wings Over Arabia, Roger Harrison chronicles this modern version of a royal progress over the wild and desolate deserts, the Red Sea coast and the mountainous southwestern region of the Kingdom. The photographs are accompanied by text covering every step of this unique journey. Additional narrative and photos of the features below the gliders supplement many of the aerial sequences. Before the Mast
Life and Death Aboard the Mary Rose
Julie Gardiner $99.95 760 pages Now Available Oxbow Books hardback 978-1-84217-504-0 The Mary Rose carried a crew of naval officers and sailors, a fighting force of gunners and soldiers, a Barber-surgeon, several ships carpenters and skilled navigators. Of nearly 500 men, fewer than 40 survived the sinking on 19th July 1545. Trapped by netting, or below deck, they stood little chance, and their bodies and belongings went to the bottom of the sea. Excavation of the hull and contents produced a huge collection of objects that together make up a picture of what life was like on board. Before the Mast explores how the men of the Mary Rose lived, through their surviving possessions; how they were fed; their music and recreation, medicine for illness and injury, as well as working practices, stowage, navigation and ships communications.

Voices from the Battlefields
Matthew Richardson $39.95 304 pages 6 x 9 100 color and b/w illustrations January 2014 hardback 978-1-84884-777-4 The opening battles on the Western Front marked a watershed in military history. A dramatic, almost Napoleonic war of movement quickly gave way to static, attritional warfare in which modern weaponry had forced the combatants to take to the earth. Some of the last cavalry charges took place in the same theater in which armored cars, motorcycles and airplanes were beginning to make their presence felt. These developments were recorded in detail by soldiers who were eyewitnesses to them. There is a freshness to their accounts which Richardson exploits in this reassessment of the 1914 campaign. His narrative emphasizes the perspective of the soldiers of the British Army, the men at the sharp end of the fighting.

Bomber Harris
Sir Arthur Harris Despatch on War Operations 19421945
John Grehan Martin Mace $34.95 256 pages 6 x 9 Illustrated June 2014 hardback 978-1-78303-298-3 The bombing campaign conducted against Germany and German-occupied Europe in the Second World War was, and remains, one of the most controversial operations of the entire war. Much of Bomber Commands effort was what was defined as area bombing, in which whole cities or districts were targeted. This strategy was so successful it almost brought Germany to the point of collapse until Churchill, worried about the devastation it was causing and the number of civilian deaths which resulted, ordered it to cease. Harris dispatches explain in great detail the success of his methods which, if given full reign, may have brought the war to a speedier conclusion but would have meant even more German casualties. Such was the controversy surrounding Bomber Commands operations; Harris dispatches were not published by the government, even though the dispatches of every other branch of the armed services, and all of their operations, were made public.

Emperors, Armies and Anarchy
Nic Fields $34.95 256 pages 6 x 9 5 maps, 8pp b/w plates June 2014 hardback 978-178159-188-8 With the death of Nero by his own shaky hand, the Iulio-Claudian dynasty came to an end, and Rome was up for the taking. This was 9 June, AD 68. The following year, commonly known as the Year of the Four Emperors, was probably one of Romes worst. Neros death threw up a critical question for the Empire. How could a new man occupy the vacant throne in Rome and establish a new dynasty? This situation had never arisen before. And how might a new emperor secure his position and authority with regards to the Senate and to the army, as well as to those who had vested interest in the system, the Praetorian Guard? The result was that ambitious and unscrupulous generals of the empire fell into a bloody power struggle to decide who had the right to wear the imperial purple.
Sulla
A Dictator Reconsidered
Lynda Telford $39.95 304 pages 6 x 9 8pp plates April 2014 hardback 9781-78303-048-4 Lucius Cornelius Sulla is one of the central figures of the Roman Republic. Indeed, he is considered a catalyst in the death of the republican system. The general whose feud with a rival led to his marching on Rome with an army at his back, leading to civil war and the terrible bloodletting of the proscriptions. In these things, he set a precedent to be followed by Julius Caesar a generation later. Lynda Telford believes Sullas portrayal as a monstrous, brutal tyrant is unjustified. While accepting that he was responsible for much bloodshed, she contends that he was no more brutal than many of his contemporaries. Moreover, even his harshest measures were motivated not by selfish ambition but by genuine desire to do what he believed best for Rome.

Railroad Guns
Hitlers Heaviest Railroad Artillery
History Films $24.95 55 minutes 5.25 x 7.5 February 2014 DVD NTSC 4260110582186 The Gustav and Dora were the names given to two of Germanys 80cm railway guns. Developed in the late 1930s, these mammoth artillery pieces were built to help destroy the main forts along the Maginot Line. These twin giants weighed almost 1,350 tons and could fire shells weighing seven tons to a range of almost thirty miles. Similarly, the Thor siege mortar was also a giant on the battlefield, sporting a 60cm caliber barrel, six mile range and weighing in at over 120 tons. This fascinating film shows these feats of engineering in their full glory through original archive footage, from their initial design and construction to testing and eventual deployment against the enemy.

The Chickamauga Campaign A Mad Irregular Battle
From the Crossing of Tennessee River Through the First Day, August 22 - September 19, 1863
David A. Powell $37.50 672 pages 6 x 9 32 b/w images and 27 maps June 2014 hardback 978-161121-174-0 eISBN: 978-1-61121-175-7 Chickamauga, according to soldier rumor, is a Cherokee word meaning River of Death. It certainly lived up to that grim sobriquet in September 1863 when the Union Army of the Cumberland and Confederate Army of Tennessee waged bloody combat along the banks of West Chickamauga Creek. Long considered a two-day affair, author David Powell embraces a fresh approach that explores Chickamauga as a three-day battle, with September 18 being key to understanding how the fighting developed the next morning. Despite its size and fascinating cast of characters, this Western Theater battle has received but scant attention. Powell rectifies this oversight with The Chickamauga CampaignA Mad Irregular Battle. The first of three installments spanning the entire campaign includes the Tullahoma Campaign in June and continues through the second day of fighting on September 19. The second installment finishes the battle from dawn on September 20 and carries both armies through the retreat into Chattanooga and the beginning of the siege. The third and last book of the series includes appendices and essays exploring specific questions about the battle in detail. Powells study fully explores the battle from all perspectives and is based upon fifteen years of intensive study and research that has uncovered nearly 2,000 primary sources from generals to private, all stitched together to relate the remarkable story that was Chickamauga.

Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campagin
How the Critical Role of Intelligence Impacted the Outcome of Lees Invasion of the North, June-July 1863
Thomas J. Ryan $32.95 432 pages 6 x 9 75 b/w images and 20 maps June 2014 hardback 978-161121-178-8 eISBN: 978-1-61121-179-5 As intelligence experts have long asserted, Information in regard to the enemy is the indispensable basis of all military plans. Despite the thousands of books and articles written about Gettysburg, Tom Ryans groundbreaking Spies, Scouts, and Secrets in the Gettysburg Campaign is the first to offer a unique and incisive comparative study of intelligence operations during what many consider the wars decisive campaign. Based upon years of indefatigable research, the author evaluates how Gen. Robert E. Lee used intelligence resources, including cavalry, civilians, newspapers, and spies to gather information about Union activities during his invasion of the North in June and July 1863, and how this information guided Lees decision-making. Simultaneously, Ryan explores the effectiveness of the Union Army of the Potomacs intelligence and counterintelligence operations. Both Maj. Gens. Joe Hooker and George G. Meade relied upon cavalry, the Signal Corps, and an intelligence staff known as the Bureau of Military Information that employed innovative concepts to gather, collate, and report vital information from a variety of sources. The result is an eye-opening, day-by-day analysis of how and why the respective army commanders implemented their strategy and tactics, with an evaluation of their respective performance as they engaged in a battle of wits to learn the enemys location, strength, and intentions.

A Box of Sand
The Italo-Ottoman War 19111912
Charles Stephenson $22.95 352 pages 6 x 9 b/w photos and maps May 2014 Tattered Flag paperback 978-0-9576892-2-0 In September 1911, Italy declared war on the Ottoman Empire. The Italian action began the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The day after Ottoman Turkey made peace with Italy in October 1912, the Balkan League attacked in the First Balkan War. The Italo-Ottoman War has so many firsts and pointers to the awful future: the first three-dimensional war with aerial reconnaissance and bombing; war fever whipped up by the Italian press; death from disease and 10,000 more from reprisals and executions. Thirty thousand men would die in a struggle for what may described as little more than a scatolone di sabbia a box of sand. As acclaimed historian Charles Stephenson portrays in this study, if there is an exemplar of the futility of war, this is it. Apart from the loss of life and the cost to Italy, the outcome was to halve the Libyan population through emigration, famine and casualties. The ItaloOttoman War was a conflict overshadowed by the Great War but one which in many ways presaged the horrors to come.
