The Master of Arts in Art History degree at San Francisco State University is designed to provide professional training for the student preparing to enter a doctoral program or to work in jobs requiring a Master's level of work in art history. Those jobs can include art gallery work, museum, community and educational programs, neighborhood arts programs and secondary and community college teaching.

Admissions Requirements
An undergraduate degree, which includes at least 18 units of upper division courses in art history, or related fields, with a 3.5 grade point average in the major and a 3.0 overall average.

Application Procedures
Applications for the M.A. program are accepted beginning November 1 through January 15 for admission the following fall. Applicants are required to file two separate applications, one to the University, and one to the Art Department. Applicants who do not complete both requirements cannot be considered for admission. Both the Universitys Graduate Studies Division and the Art Department must accept an applicant. Admission to the program is highly competitive and it is not possible to admit all fully qualified individuals. Please view our FAQ section for frequently asked questions regarding the M.A. program and application requirements before contacting the department with questions. All applications must be completed by January 15th. Late applications will not be accepted.

STEP 1: University Application

A graduate admissions application is obtained by visiting the CSU mentor website at: http://www.csumentor.edu/AdmissionApp/. The University Admissions Office must receive the formal application for admission and one set of official transcripts, in the same envelope (for the fastest processing), from ALL post-high school institutions attended by January 15 to complete your University file. Mail transcripts to: Graduate Admissions Office San Francisco State University 1600 Holloway Ave (ADM 250) San Francisco, CA 94132

STEP 2: Art Department Application

The art department application process is online only, through SlideRoom (http//gradartsfsu.slideroom.com). Currently, the art department is piloting this program for regular use and there is application no fee, this may change in the future. We are not accepting hard copy applications. The following are the required documents for application, which you will be required to upload onto the SlideRoom website: 1. A completed Art Department Master of Arts Admissions Application (completed through SlideRoom). 2. An electronic copy of transcripts (official or unofficial) from all institutions of higher learning attended. The Art Department transcript requirements are in addition to the official transcripts required in the application to the University. Applicants should note that transcripts will not be forwarded to the Art Department from the Graduate Admissions Office and vice versa. 3. One electronic copy of your current resume/cv. 4. A two-page double-spaced statement of purpose describing your interests and background in art history, reasons for pursuing the M.A. degree, and reasons for seeking to attend San Francisco State University. 5. Three letters of recommendation from individuals qualified to testify to your capabilities and readiness to enter graduate study in art. You will be providing a name and email address of three recommenders. The recommender will be sent an email with a summary of what is happening and a link, which will bring them to a private portal for adding their letter. Once submitted, reference letters are merged with the applicant's account but the applicant can never see the letter. Applicants will only receive confirmation that the letter was submitted. 6. A sample of your art history writing (a previous term paper may be submitted, exam answers may not be submitted for consideration). 7. Graduate Record Exams (GRE) General Test scores are required and will be evaluated in conjunction with other qualifications (http://www.ets.org). The S.F. State ETS code is 4684; the art history major code is 2301. Please provide an unofficial electronic copy of the GRE score report in order to expedite application review. For questions regarding how to use SlideRoom please go here (http://slideroom.besnappy.com/applicant-guide).

International Applicants
The letters of recommendation, statement of purpose and any other supplemental written documents must be translated into English. The Division of Graduate Studies requires the TOEFL exam for English language assessment, which has to have been completed in the past two calendar years. International applicants should check the graduate studies website for university graduate admissions requirements.

Application Status Notification

We welcome your inquiry and wish you success in the event you apply. A strictly limited number of applicants can be admitted to the M.A. program and the process is highly competitive. Please be assured, however, that your materials will be carefully reviewed. Applicants will be informed of the status of their applications for fall admission by April 1.
