Advanced Water Distribution System

Inspiration:
Many countries including India are still using the conventional method for fulfilling the domestic water needs. The water requirements for different areas are managed by manually operating the valves and water pumps of the corresponding regions/areas. In day to day life we have seen many situations of water and power being wasted because of the laziness and irresponsibility of the operator such as 1. Supplying water more than the requirements. 2. Overflowing the water tanks without proper monitoring. 3. Leakages at different valves and connectors/couplers because of improper maintenance. 4. Leakages due to breakage of pipes. 5. Imbalance in distribution of water.

Innovation:
To make the water distribution system more efficient and to reduce the unnecessary wastage of water and power, we are proposing Advanced Water Distribution System for both Rural and Urban areas. The Advanced Water Distribution System (AWD System) is an intelligent system which ensures the balanced distribution of the water throughout the city. The AWD system offers complete & effective automation for the Water distribution system. It monitors, controls and protects all the water pumps used for the water distribution purpose. It monitors all the water storage tanks situated in the city and distributes the water equally to all the areas depending upon the amount of water in the tank. All these tasks are monitored through dedicated system software of the AWD system. It is versatile and allows addition of areas, control valves, storage tanks and water pumps. The AWD System is an integrated system which consists of 4 units. Namely, (1) Primary Processing Unit (PPU) (2) Motor Controlling Unit (MCU) (3) Water Tank Monitoring Unit (WTMU) & (4) Valves Controlling Unit (VCU)

Motor Controlling Unit MCU is attached to every water pumps in the city. The function of the MCU is to monitor, control and protect the motor. Primarily MCU receives commands from WTMU to operate the Motor depending on the level of water in the tank. In addition to this, MCU continuously monitors the power fed to the motor to protect the motor from the burnouts. It also monitors for the source water availability of that pump. The MCU provides the following protection to the motor. Dry run protection. Phase/voltage Imbalance protection. Protection for grounding and loading faults. Phase reversal Protection (3 Phase motors). The MCU also provides automatic assigning of the phase lines for the motor, upon phase reversal. Hence MCU ensures complete control of the water pumps. Water Tank Monitoring Unit WTMU is attached to every water storage tank in the city. WTMU performs continuous water level monitoring of the tank. Whenever the water level reaches the lower threshold, it informs MCU to turn on the motor. When water level reaches higher threshold, it informs MCU to turn off the motor. It also communicates with PPU regarding quantity of water present in the tank in exchange for the enquiry made by the PPU. Primary Processing Unit The PPU is the main processing unit and it is responsible to control the remaining 3 units (MCU, WTMU & VCU). PPU has the database of: (1) Total no. of areas in the city for which the water needs to be distributed. (2) No. of control valves in each area (No. of VCU). (3) Total no. of water pumps situated in the city for water distribution purpose (No. of MCU). (4) Total no. of water tanks and their capacities (No. of WTMU). Whenever the operator wants to supply water to certain area by using the software or the pre scheduled event occurs for any area, the PPU sends an enquiry to WTMU of that area about the amount of water contained in the tank. WTMU responds back by sending the information regarding quantity of the water in the tank. Depending upon received data and the remaining no. of areas corresponds to that tank

need to be served; PPU decides the duration for which water to be supplied for that area so that remaining areas also get the equal quantity of water. Then it sends information to the VCU of that area to turn on the valve for the defined amount of time. If this duration is less than the actual requirement of that area, then it is covered when the tank is refilled. Hence PPU ensures balanced and sufficient water distribution to the city. If water is directly fed from the motor, then the motor is triggered on through MCU for the defined amount of time. The communications between all the units are done by using GSM standards or by any suitable wireless networks. Valves Controlling Unit VCU is attached to the regional solenoid valves. VCU performs operation of solenoid valves for defined amount of time upon reception of information from PPU. It consists of solenoid protection unit, which protects the solenoid from high current surges. It also consists of water flow monitoring unit, which will be used to shut down the solenoid when there is no water flow from its output. It also helps in detecting the pipe breakages and water thefts. Target Student Audience: Junior or Senior College students, UG & PG students Benefits to the Society: 1. AWD system provides balanced water distribution throughout the city. 2. Saves Water and Power. 3. Provides an effective solution to regular real world water problems.

Making a dream come true Implementation of AWD system relies on the following factors. Effective wireless communication between all the 4 modules. This is achieved through existing wireless networks. PPU must be capable of handling several no. of areas, and many no. of control valves. This is achieved by utilizing the combination of efficient hardware and software. WTMU must monitor the water level properly and the sensor used must possess long life. This is achieved by using contact less field detection based water sensors.

MCU must control and protect the motor in order to achieve a destruction free water distribution. This relies on the efficient protection unit. VCUs must operate the solenoids effectively to achieve the long life of the solenoids. The implementation details for each of these requirements are described below.
