7.A reinforced concrete column 300x200mm is reinforced with 8 steel rods with a
total area of 1820mm2.The column carries an axial load of 400KN.If the modulus of
elasticity of steel is 18 times that of concrete, find the stresses in concrete and in steel. (16)

8.A gun metal rod 25mm diameter,screwed at the ends passed through a steel
tube 25mm and 30mm internal and external diameters respectively. The nuts on the rod
are screwed tightly hoe on the ends of the tube. Find intensity of stress in each metal when

9. A Composite bar made up of aluminium and steel is firmly held between two
unyielding supports as shown in fig. An axial load of 200KN is applied at B at 320k.Find
the stresses in each material when the temperature is 370k.Take modulus of elasticity of
aluminium is 70Gpa and 210GPa respectively. Take coefficient of thermal expansion for
aluminium and steel are 24x10e-6/k, 12x10e-6/k respectively.

19. Two similar round bars A and B are each 300mm long, 20mm diameter for
length 100mm, 40 mm diameter for a length 200mm and 20mm diameter for length of
200mm, 40mm diameter for length of 100mm. Maximum stress produced by the same
below on the bar B. If the bar B is also stressed to 100 MPa. Determine the ratio of energy
stored by the bar B and A.
