A Second Plan of Ju!tification: In the Roman Catholic view, it is necessary for the person who is baptized to cooperate with infused race to stay in a state of race, because, accordin to Rome, people can lose their !ustification. If a person commits a very serious sin, the race of !ustification is killed. Thus, the Roman Catholic Church calls such sins "mortal sins#. $ince savin race is infused into a person at baptism, it would seem that if a baptized person commits a mortal sin, thus wipin out the race of !ustification in his or her soul, in order to be !ustified a ain, the person would have to be baptized a ain. %ut the Roman Catholic Church does not rebaptize people who commit mortal sins& there is a character indelebilis, an indelible mark that is placed on the soul of everyone who is baptized. Thus, restoration to !ustification in the event of mortal sin is throu h another sacrament, penance, which the Roman Catholic Church describes as the second plank of !ustification for those who have made shipwreck of their souls 'the sacrament of penance was what provoked the controversy that led to the (rotestant Reformation in the si)teenth century*. $o the first instrument cause of !ustification, the ne)t time the instrumental cause is the sacrament of penance. In short, accordin to Rome , sacraments are the instruments by which salvation is communicated. +e)t on the editorial column , "-rom The .orkin /f The .ork#. Compiled from What is Baptism? b! A bi forest fire burned for many days in the mountains of 0ellowstone (ark in 1$A. At last there were no more flames or smoke. /nly then was the round cool enou h to walk on, so the forest ran ers went up into the mountains. They needed to see how much dama e the fire had done to the trees and animals. As they climbed, they saw that many trees had been burned down. Then one of the ran ers found a bird under a burnt tree. The bird was still standin up, even thou h it had died in the heat. The ran er was very sad to see this. 2e took a stick and ently pushed the bird over. Then he had a bi surprise. Three tiny chic ! ran out from under the dead mother3bird4s win s. %he mother carried them: .hat had happened5 The mother3bird knew that her youn family would all be killed in the fire if they stayed in the tree. $he must have carried each one to the round at the bottom of the tree and hidden them under her win s. It was the only place low down where they would be sa e , the &oi!onou! smoke always oes upwards. There the mother , bird stayed. The heat of the fire killed her, but her chicks were safe. $he could have flown to safety, but she chose to save her babies. The pain of the flames had come to her. $he thou ht of her chicks and not herself. $he was willin to die so that those who were under her win s would live.
