KEY FEATURES
INTRODUCTION
These wel l -desi gned and const ruct ed l ow-pressure-

di rectl y to steel pi pi ng, thereby el i mi nati ng potenti al
l eaky f l anges or t hreaded j oi nt s, and si mpl i f yi ng
i nstal l ati on. Constructi on wi th cast steel bodi es i s
l i ghter but tougher than conventi onal cast i ron semi -
steel bodi es, but has adequate wal l thi ckness to
avoi d t he rust i ng-t hrough pot ent i al i nherent wi t h

INSTALLATION
Al l of t hese wel di ng val ves may be i nst al l ed i n
hori zont al or vert i cal pi pe l i nes. St ems may be
hori zontal or verti cal or angl ed upward. Gl obe val ves
and 12" , 14" , and 16" angl e val ves i n hori zont al
suction lines, liquid overfeed return lines, or condenser
drai n l i nes shoul d preferabl y have stems hori zontal
rather than upward to avoi d parti al l i qui d trappi ng at
val ve seat ori fi ces. Angl e val ves under 12" wi l l not
trap l i qui d or gas at the seat ori fi ce. Inl et pressure
for al l val ve si zes shoul d normal l y be under val ve
seat di sc. However, hi gh pressure di fferences mi ght
push t he val ve di sc very sl i ght l y of f of i t s seat ,
requi ri ng very hi gh handwheel or wrench t orque t o
overcome. Therefore, for pressure differences
exceeding approximately 125 psi, valves 8"
and larger should have inlet pressure above
valve disc, using a small bypass valve for
preopening equalization. Thi s makes openi ng
t or que mor e r easonabl e. Such a hi gh pr essur e
di f f erence appl i cat i on i s very unl i kel y except f or
di scharge l i ne to sucti on l i ne crossover. In some
cases, such as i sol ati ng pressure vessel s or ammoni a
di ffusi on boxes, i t may be necessary to i nstal l val ve
wi t h t he f l ow opposi t e normal di rect i on i n order t o
have i nl et pressure on top of the seat.
A val ve shoul d preferabl y have i ts bonnet/stem/seat
di sc assembl y removed before wel di ng. Thi s reduces
wei ght duri ng wel di ng, prot ect s Tef l on seat di sc f rom
wel di ng sparks, and f aci l i t at es cl eani ng of wel di ng
debri s from body i nteri or pri or to val ve operati on.
The val ve stem shoul d be several turns open when
removi ng and repl aci ng the bonnet assembl y. The
tefl on seat di sc shoul d be protected when outsi de of
the val ve. Where i t i s necessary or when i t i s standard
pract i ce t o wel d a val ve i nt o t he l i ne wi t hout bonnet
removal , the stem shoul d be opened several turns to
prevent seat di sc heat damage. Because of great
compactness, 2" and l arger angl e val ves requi re
some ext ra care i f wel ded i nt o pi pel i nes wi t hout
di sassembl y i n order to avoi d wel di ng sparks stri ki ng
t he Tef l on seat f rom t he out l et wel d connect i on.
Use of wel di ng ri ngs i s opt i onal but recommended.
Wel ds shoul d be anneal ed as necessary i n accordance
with good practice. Valves and welds should be painted
for corrosi on protecti on. Pi pe coveri ng, where appl i ed,
shoul d have proper moi sture barri er.
Bef ore put t i ng val ves i nt o servi ce, al l pi pe wel d
connecti ons, val ve seats, bonnet seal s, and stem seal s
shoul d be tested for l eaks at pressure l evel s cal l ed
for i n appropri ate codes. Shut-off val ves l eadi ng to
the atmosphere, even if it is temporary, must be plugged
or capped to prevent corrosi on i nsi de of the val ve, as
wel l as l eakage due to seat expansi on, vi brati on or
i mproper openi ng; val ve seat shoul d be cracked open
to prevent hydrostati c expansi on between the val ve
and cap.
INSULATION
Conventi onal val ve-shaped bl ock i nsul ati on can be
used for angl e val ves. Fabri cated i nsul ati on shapes
are recommended for gl obe val ves 1" and l arger
because of low pressure drop tilt design. If not available
l ocal l y, Hansen can suppl y or recommend a source
of gl obe val ve i nsul ati on. See page 5, exteri or val ve
di mensi ons, for i nsul ati on fabri cati on.
CONNECTION DIMENSIONS
Mat ch U.S. pi pe havi ng t hese gauges:
1" : Schedul e 80 st eel
2" t o 10" : Schedul e 40 st eel
12" t o 16" : 0.375" wal l st eel
ADVANTAGES
Compared to threaded val ves, these wel di ng val ves
el i mi nate the chance of future l eaks at pi pe threads.
In addi ti on, a butt-wel ded pi pe-to-val ve body j oi nt
el i mi nates the i nherent weakness and vul nerabi l i ty of
the threaded porti on of pi pe i mmedi atel y adj acent to
a screwed val ve body or f l ange.
Compared to fl anged val ves, these wel di ng val ves
el i mi nate the gasket j oi nt l eakage potenti al at the
fl ange j oi nt due to pi pe and bol t-nut movement as the
resul t of temperature expansi on and pressure surges.
Pressure drop i s l ower than conventi onal fl anged cast
val ve bodi es, especi al l y for strai ght through (gl obe)
conf i gurat i on. In addi t i on, nearl y al l ref ri gerat i on
fl anged val ves are made of cast i ron or semi -steel ,
whi ch i s merel y a type of cast i ron. Steel has much
greater tensile strength, ductility, and impact resistance
t han cast i ron. Compared t o pressed sheet st eel
wel di ng, Hansen val ves have heavi er cast st eel wal l
t hi cknesses f or gr eat er r i gi di t y and cor r osi on
resi stance.
Compared to bal l val ves, these wel di ng val ves have
no threaded or fl anged-gasket pi pe j oi nts. They wi l l
not open or cl ose so fast as to cause severe pi pe
shock due to sudden l i qui d vel oci ty change. Unl i ke
Hansen wel di ng steel val ves, bal l val ve stem packi ngs
can commonl y not be repl aced whi l e the val ve i s i n a
pressuri zed l i ne. Al so, di rt or damage to bal l val ve
Tefl on seats cannot be overcome by greater stem
cl osi ng forces.
Compared to butterfl y val ves, these wel di ng val ves
do not requi re fl anges and fl ange j oi nts, do not requi re
body removal from the l i ne for seat di sc repl acement,
wi l l not open or cl ose so rapi dl y as to cause severe
pi pe shock and, i n angl e pattern, can be i nstal l ed i n
l i eu of an el bow. In addi ti on, the hi gh seati ng forces,
avai l abl e when necessary, gi ve ti ghter cl osi ng than a
butterfl y seat seal at l ow pressure drops or i n the
presence of di rt.
