g Corridor Name: Lauren Purvis Date: 10-01-13 Unit: Jumping Rope Grade Level: 5th

Lesson #____1__ of ___2____ Lesson Format 1. Objectives A Students Psychomotor- Students will demonstrate the proper technique for jumping rope by keeping their eyes on the rope and wrists at waists. Cognitive- Students will demonstrate their proper level of jumping rope by checking off the completed levels of the jump rope ladder. Affective- Students will demonstrate cooperation by helping other students in the class by demonstrating their skills, communicating, or encouraging their other classmates. Technology- Students will watch a YouTube video clip to get an idea of different jump rope jumps they will be completing today. B. Teacher I will be able to demonstrate and instruct all students the correct mechanics of jumping rope while maintaining a safe and enjoyable setting. 2. Complete List of Equipment You Will Need 25 jump ropes (have different sizes and styles for students), Jump Rope Ladder worksheets, pencils, poster, and on white board 3. Protocols - What are 3-5 protocols you will review with the students at the beginning of class? Write them the same way you will tell them to the students. I will have the students stand on the black line that is near the stage and explain that this will be the bring it in space, so when I yell those three words, bring all equipment you are using and stand on the line neatly, facing the stage (me). I will use the term freeze when I have something to go over. When I say, freeze I want you to stop moving as quickly as possible, hold on to the equipment, and look at me for further directions. Finally, jumping rope is a very fun activity but it can be dangerous at times. I want everyone to be spread out across the gym and to not go into anyones jumping bubble (the entire space you take up with the jump rope). If I see someone do this, you will get only 1 warning and then you must sit out for a few minutes. 4. Instant Activity -- Before class begins, have jump ropes available in the front of the gymnasium and they have approximately 3 minutes to explore the different ways to jump rope before I go over explain each way. This gives me a chance to assess each students skill before the lesson. 5. Set Induction- To get students excited about jumping rope, I will show them a 1:50 minute YouTube clip of a girl demonstrating her expertise of the skill. I will explain to the students that jumping rope is a very fun activity that everyone can always get better at and it is very good for your cardiovascular health. They can also use these skills for Jump Rope for Heart that is coming up in February. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=inv9GmZ7VyI>

LESSON CONTENT & Teaching Cues The cues PROGRESSIONS are short quotes of what Introduction, skills task analysis, you are saying to students activity/games to remind them of proper form. Introduction- Explain to the students that we will be going over the proper way to jump rope and other ways you can jump rope by yourself, and then we will begin to jump rope in groups and if we have time we may even get to start double-dutching. Go over the protocols listed above. Set Induction- Video clip for the students to watch on the iPad so they can all see how there are many ways to jump rope. It will be used as a demonstration tool and will excite the students for the lesson. Instant Activity- Complete instant activity above to assess students skill level. Eyes on the rope

MANAGERIAL STRATEGIES Organization of space, equipment, students (diagrams of practice formations, equipment set up, and game situations), including method for assigning students to groups Teaching by Invitation: Prior to the start of class, have different jump ropes out and accessible so that students can choose whatever they feel would work best for them. Students will grab their preferred jump rope and will spread out across the gym so they will not hit anyone with their equipment. X x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x x

Safety Procedures Checking field, equipment, and facilities for debris, damage, etc. What safety procedures will you take to make sure ALL students are safe in your class? Walk around gym space to make sure there is no food, water spots, or any other debris/damage that could possible cause harm. Have the equipment spread out at the front of the gym so students do not collide. Make sure students are spread out across gym to increase safety.

Have students stay out of each others bubble. Failure to do this will result in sitting out of class for 2 minutes. Be sure to be strict about the protocols and to allow only one warning, followed by a 2-minute penalty. If they break a rule after the 2 minute penalty, they will sit out for the remainder of the class.

They must stay within the gym space. Bring it in area= by the stage. Tell each student to grab his/her jump rope and to line up on the black line. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx - students X teacher Activity 1: Students will grab their preferred jump rope and will spread out across the gym so they will not hit anyone with

Activity #1- Jumping Explain how to properly jump rope through a demonstration. It is important for students to know there are various ways to jump Wrists above waists rope, however this is the most basic way. Have students practice for a few minutes. Ask students to count the amount of times they can jump over the rope without messing

up. Repeat the cues. Activity #2- Jump Rope Ladder On a poster, the white board, and the different sheets of paper is something known as the Jump Rope Ladder. This is for every student to complete individually, however you can receive tips of advise from another classmate. There are 18 levels of this ladder and they get harder as the number increases. You must be able to do each level for at least 15 seconds before moving onto the next level. I will be walking around to check to make sure no one is checking off levels they did not complete! Be honest! If you are stuck on a level, you may skip it and try another. Keep working on the levels that are hard for you. Check off each level you complete. Come to me if you have any questions. Demonstrate the first 5 jumps. Jump Rope Ladder 1. Forwards jump- jump over forwards 2. Double bounce- two bounces before one jump 3. Single bounce- one bounce and jump 4. Hop- on one foot 5. Backwards jump 6. Jog & jump 7. Hot peppers- jump as fast as you can 8. Side swing- swing rope out wide and then jump 9. Straddle- jump with feet out

Intra-Task Variation- for those students who are struggling, have them swing the rope over their head until it hits their feet, then have the student jump over the non-moving rope so they get the movements down. For the students who are already excelling, have then try to jump very fast and not make mistakes. eyes on the rope Pinpointing- Ask student before they demonstrate a way to jump rope to the class and make sure to call the cues out. Freeze! Have students drop their ropes and stand in a space they can see/hear me. Begin Activity #2 and demonstrate the first 5 types of jumps:

Have students stay out of each others bubble.

Make sure students are spread out across gym to increase safety.

1.

Forwards jump- jump over forwards 2. Double bounce- two bounces before one jump 3. Single bounce- one bounce and jump 4. Hop- on one foot 5. Backwards jump

Keep the papers out of the way of the space the students are jumping around so they do not slip on the sheets of paper.

wide 10. Twister- twist body while jumping 11. Skier- jump side to side over a line when jumping 12. Bell- jump up and down the line 13. Heel taps- switch heel taps when jumping 14. Rocker- body like a rocking chair/horse 15. Hopscotch- single, straddle, single, straddle 16. The X- criss cross legs when jumping 17. Crossovers- cross arms when jumping 18. Double unders- rope passes under twice to one jump Activity #3- Jumping Rope in groups. Once students display an average level of competency, then I will begin to explain Jumping Rope in groups. For those students who are still struggling, I would like them to remain on the Jump Rope Ladder, so they can still be successful in this lesson. This requires a longer rope. Two people will turn the rope while the other person will try and jump over the rope. The turners must do the 1,2,3 before they swing the initial rope. The jumper should try and stay in the same area. After 10 jumps trade positions.

Hand out a piece of paper to students as you walk around the gym observing them. Remind the students to check off each level they get to! TBI: Allow students to try each different level, rather than only allowing them to move up once they succeed in the previous level. ITV: If students are progressing rapidly, give them a harder rope to use or get them to count as many times they can do each level without making a mistake. Bring It in Tell each student to grab his/her jump rope and to line up on the black line to get ready for Activity #3. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx - students X teacher 1,2,3 Before you begin this activity, choose the three most skilled students in the class to demonstrate group jumping. Make sure you ask before they demonstrate. Break groups up into 3s based on similar eye color. ITV- If students are not doing well, have the Turners swing the rope slower. If students are doing well, have them change directions, speed up the rope, have them clap, or even let them

Wrists above waists

The ropes are NOT weapons, do not swing them (whip) them at people!

Make sure students are spread out across gym to increase safety.

Closure- have students return all equipment to the front of the stage nicely and neatly and then to stand on the black line to end lesson.

double dutch.

6. Closure/Assessment - How can you prove they met the objectives stated above? Great job today class. I was really impressed with how you all practiced the proper safety and many of you are very good at jumping rope. What are some things you should do when jumping rope? Should I swing my arms all around or keep them above my waist and turns my wrist? In order to jump as fast as possible should I jump as high as I can or small, short jumps? You can easily jump rope at home by yourself or with others. Jump Rope for Heart is coming up around in the spring so be there! By observing students throughout the class, I will able to assess them based on my psychomotor, cognitive, and affective objectives. I will be able to walk around to each student and ask him or her questions to assess their cognitive and affective understanding, while being able to observe their psychomotor progress by collecting their Jump Rope Ladder worksheets. PA and National Standards: National: Standard 1- The physically literate individual demonstrates competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns Standard 2- The physically literate individual applies knowledge of concepts, principles, strategies and tactics related to movement and performance.
