Consumables for welding high strength steels Strength levels in weld metals are relatively easily attained via additions of conventional alloying elements such as Ni, Cr & Mo, as the weld deposit has a largely as cast microstructure. OERLIKON welding consumable alloying regimes are designed to optimise the chemical composition to match the high level of strength required while generating high levels of weld metal toughness.

High strength fine-grained construction steels

For all the different designs of cranes, high strength steels are used to fulfill increasingly demanding applications, while good weldability is required for on site welding. The evolution in steel production over the last decades has taken place via two development routes: normalised and quenched and tempered steels with very high yield strengths (S690Q, S890Q, S960Q and S 1100Q) and thermomechanically rolled TMCP steels with a more moderate yield strength, but with higher toughness (S355M, S460M and S500M).

Technical Focus 1: Hydrogen Induced Cold Cracking

During welding, high-strength steels are susceptible to hydrogen induced or cold cracking. The cold-cracking behaviour of weld joints is influenced as follows:
I

Chemical analysis of the base metal and the Carbon equivalent or CET* value. Chemical analysis of the weld metal Hydrogen content of the weld metal Base material thickness Inherent stress level of the construction Heat input during welding

I I I I I

Welding technology for high strength fine-grained constructional steels

High strength steels can be welded by all conventional welding processes, manual or mechanised, however arc welding and shielded arc welding are generally preferred because of the lower heat input. Apart from conventional methods, laser welding is particularly recommended for thinner plates, because of the high welding speed and hence the narrow heat-affected zone.
2010-924

*CET = C + (Mn+Mo) / 10 + (Cr+Cu) / 20 + Ni / 40

Cold cracks can be effectively avoided if the following guidelines are observed:
I

The base material should be preheated if necessary, depending on the weld preparation, workpiece thickness and steel grade. The joint should be clean and dry Low hydrogen welding consumables should be used, i.e. <5 ml H2 per 100 g deposited weld metal When possible, leaner alloyed systems depositing a lower strength weld metal should be used Welding sequence plans should be observed, in order to avoid high stress levels.

I I

In general, instructions as per SEW 088 for the avoidance of cracks should be followed. OERLIKON welding consumables are designed to satisfy the most stringent requirements in terms of diffusible hydrogen level. The manufacturing process has been designed by OERLIKON to produce very low hydrogen consumables with a high resistance to subsequent moisture pick-up during use. These advanced techniques applied to the design of OERLIKON welding consumables have contributed to the global recognition for reliable and high quality construction of HYSS when using OERLIKON welding products.

Technical focus 2: Preheating

Preheating involves heating the base material, which has to be welded. There are four main reasons for using preheat: 1. it reduces the cooling rate in the weld metal and base material, producing a more ductile metallurgical structure with a higher resistance to cold cracking 2. a slower cooling rate reduces the potential for cracking 3. it reduces the shrinkage stresses in the weld and base material 4. it can be used to help to ensure specific properties, such as weld metal and base material hardness In determining whether or not to preheat, the following issues should be considered: 1. chemical analysis of base material 2. requirements of the base material 3. section and base material thickness 4. ambient air temperature 5. welding consumable hydrogen content 6. previous cracking problems When welding high yield strength steels in the range of section thicknesses 5 - 30 mm, the application of pre-heat is an important consideration to prevent hydrogen induced or cold cracking. OERLIKON welding consumables for these applications are designed to have low levels of moisture, and hence low levels of diffusible hydrogen, both at the start of welding and after to exposure to atmospheric moisture during the working period, which is an important factor when welding these hardenable high yield strength steels. The methodology for calculating pre-heats is as follows: Carbon equivalent CET

Technical Focus 3: Heat Input

Heat input is a relative measure of the energy transferred per unit length of weld. It is an important factor because, similar to preheat and interpass temperature, it influences the cooling rate t8-5, which may affect the metallurgical structure and hence the mechanical properties of the weld and the HAZ, see graph below. The higher the heat input the slower the cooling rate and the lower the heat input the faster the cooling rate.

Influence of the temperature cycle on grain size range during welding

To calculate the heat input per unit length of weld when arc welding, the following formula is used:
E=Ix U 60 x VS 1000

The heat input Q is derived from above formula by the multiplication with an energy factor which depends on the welding process applied.
Q= xE
where E = heat input per unit length of weld (kJ/mm), U = voltage (V), I = current (A), and VS = welding speed (mm/min). The efficiency is dependent on the welding process used, with shielded metal arc welding having a value of 0.8, gas metal arc welding and submerged arc welding, 1.0, and gas tungsten arc welding, 0.7.

If cooling speeds are too low, joint toughness properties are impaired and the heat affected zone is widened. The t8-5 time should be between 6 - 15 s. The interpass temperature should be 25 C - 50 C higher than the preheating temperature. Heat inputs above 3.0 - 3.5 kJ/mm should be avoided. Should PWHT be necessary after welding, it should be carried out in the range 530 C - 580 C.

The Soft Silence PulseTM is a quieter pulsed mode mainly intended Soft for stainless steel welding applications. The SSPTM produces a Silence softer but very stable arc with good wetting of the weld bead. PulseTM This waveform significantly reduces spatter and gives a very fine (SSP) appearance to the weld bead. The Cold Double PulseTM produces very high quality welds on thin material while avoiding distortion. CDPTM gives a TIG appearance to Cold the weld and is very effective on very thin aluminium or stainless Double steel sheet (< 2 mm). The operating technique is made easier due PulseTM to good control of the weld pool even on badly-prepared sheets. (CDP) This sequencer mode automatically chains hot arc and cold arc regimes together.

AZURMATIC cutting tables

2002-506

1806-064

3 models of table adapted to the process of cutting

Extraction table for dry cutting
The AZURMATIC table with air extraction offers unrivalled efficiency in terms of fume extraction due to its unique system of transverse extraction ducts. Robustly designed in one-piece or modular form, the table is divided over its length into 1 metre sections, extraction taking place across the full width of the table on the module in operation only. Mechanical grills actuated by the displacement of the machine provide suction under the sheet at the place of cutting only. This principle of operation guarantees optimum extraction, irrespective of the size of the sheet being cut, while maintaining a modest extraction air-flow rate. Technical characteristics: Transverse duct extraction system, I Division into 1 metre sections over the length of the table (500 and 750 mm sections on demand for intensive use), I Removable slag boxes, I Removable workpiece supporting frame with flat irons (section 100 x 6 mm) and wire mesh grid (50 x 50 x 5 mm), I Maximum capacity: sheet up to 300 mm thick.
I

Constant water level extraction table

Various processes, especially plasma cutting with nonimmersed water vortex, require a cutting table with water recovery and fume extraction. This table provides both possibilities. This process (which is patented) avoids the need for filtering equipment upstream of fume extraction. Technical characteristics: One-piece design divided into 630 mm sections, I Standard lengths of 3 to 12 m, I Standard widths: 1.5 - 2 - 2.5 and 3 m, I Height: 700, 800 or 920 mm I Maximum capacity: sheet thickness 50 mm.
I

Variable water level tables

Variable water level tables are specifically intended for immersed plasma cutting. This procedure limits pollution by solid or gaseous matter and gives protection against audible and visual stress. It improves accuracy of cutting while limiting distortion caused by heating of the workpiece. Technical characteristics: I Modular construction in lengths of 1.5, 1.75 and 2 m, I Widths to demand, I Pivoting workpiece support frame for easier, faster cleaning.
