The forward screed shall be adGusted so that the float will lap the distance specified by the Angineer on each transverse trip. The float shall pass over each areas of pavement at least two times, but e:cessive operation over a given area will not be permitted. $ny e:cess water or soupy material shall be wasted over the side forms on each pass. $lternative *echanical *ethod. $s an alternative, the -ontractor may use a machine composed of a cutting and smoothing float or floats suspended from and guided by a rigid frame. The frame shall be carried by four or more visible wheels riding on, and constantly in contact with the side forms. If necessary, following one of the preceding method of floating, long handled floats having blades not less than #." cm 6. feet7 in length and #. cm 65 inches7 in width may be used to smooth and fill in opente:tured areas in the pavement. 8ong-handled floats shall not be used to float the entire surface of the pavement in lieu of, or supplementing, one of the preceding methods of floating. 9hen stri;e off and consolidation are done by the hand method and the crown of the pavement will not permit the use of the longitudinal float, the surface shall be floated transversely by means of the long-handled float. -are shall be ta;en not to wor; the crown out of the pavement during the operation. $fter floating, any e:cess water and laitance shall be removed from the surface of the pavement by a !-m straight-edge or more in length. Noints $ll Goints shall be constructed in accordance with Subsection !##.!.#'. 5. Protection $gainst <ain In order that the concrete may be properly protected against rain before the concrete is sufficiently hardened, the -ontractor will be re uired to have available at all times, materials for the protection of the edges and surface of the unhardened concrete. Such protective materials shall consist of standard metal forms or wood plan;s having a nominal thic;ness of not less than ." mm 6' inches7 and a nominal width of not less than the thic;ness of the pavement at its edge for the protection of the pavement edges, and covering material such as burlap or cotton mats, curing paper or plastic sheeting materials for the protection of the surface of the pavement. 9hen rain appears imminent, all paving operations shall stop and all available personnel shall begin placing forms against the sides of the pavement and covering the surface of the unhardened concrete with the protective covering. 311.3.20 Acceptance o( Concrete The strength level of the concrete will be considered satisfactory if the averages of all sets of three 6!7 consecutive strength test results e ual or e:ceed the specified strength, fcF and no individual strength test result is deficient by more than #.> of the specified strength, fcF. -oncrete deemed to be not acceptable using the above criteria may be reGected unless the -ontractor can provide evidence, by means of core tests, that the uality of concrete represented by failed test results is acceptable in place. $t least three 6!7 representative cores shall be ta;en from each member or area

The obtaining and testing of drilled cores shall be in accordance with $$S%T& T '1. -oncrete in the area represented by the cores will be considered ade uate if the average strength of the cores is e ual to at least 3.> of, and if no single core is less than (.> of, the specified strength, fcF. If such tests are not conducted prior to the specified age the pavement shall not be operated to traffic until #1 days after the concrete was placed. The completed pavement shall be accepted on a lot basis. $ lot shall be considered as #""" linear meters of pavement when a single traffic lane is poured or ."" linear meters when two lanes are poured concurrently. unit is shorter than K of the normal lot length, it shall be included in the previous lot. &ther areas such as intersections, entrances, crossovers, ramp, etc., will be grouped together to form a lot. Small irregular areas may be included with other unit areas to form a lot. Each lot will be divided into five (5) equal se !ents and one co"e will be obtained f"o! each se !ent in acco"dance with ##$%&' & 24( '. Pavement Thic;ness It is the intent of this Specification that the pavement has a uniform thic;ness as called for on the Plans for the average of each lot as defined. $fter the pavement has met all surface smoothness re uirements, cores for thic;ness measurements will be ta;en. In calculating the average thic;ness of the pavement, individual measurements which are in e:cess of the specified thic;ness by more than . mm will be considered as the specified thic;ness plus . mm and measurement which are less than the specified thic;ness by more than '. mm shall not be included in the average. 9hen the average thic;ness for the lot is deficient, the contract unit price will be adGusted for thic;ness in accordance with paragraph 6! below7. Individual areas within a segment found deficient in thic;ness by more than '. mm shall be evaluated by the Angineer, and if in his Gudgment, the deficient areas warrant removal, they shall be removed and replaced by the -ontractor with pavement of the specified thic;ness at his entire e:pense. %owever, if the evaluation of the Angineer is that the deficient area should not be removed and replaced, such area will not be paid. 9hen the measurement of any core is less than the specified thic;ness by more than '. mm, the actual thic;ness of the pavement in this area will be determined by ta;ing additional cores at no less than . m intervals parallel to the center line in each direction from the affected location until a core is found in each direction, which is not deficient in thic;ness by more than '. mm. The area of slab for which no payment will be made shall be the product of the paving width multiplied by the distance along the center line of the road between transverse sections found not deficient in thic;ness by more than '. mm. The thic;ness of the remainder of the segment to be used to get the average thic;ness of each lot shall be determined by ta;ing the average thic;ness of additional cores which are not deficient by more than '. mm. !. $dGustment for Thic;ness
