senior citizen population will increase from 35 million 72 million over the next 17 years. This growth rate represents that 20 percent of the US will be over the age of 65 by 2030. With this statistic in mind, children of seniors often ask themselves how they will offer their parents a quality life while giving them independence of living in their own home. Local Right at Home owner, Mary Farmer, offers the services that many seniors need now and will increasingly require over the next 30 plus years to be able to stay in their homes safely for a longer period of time. Farmer established a Right at Home franchise company in Albuquerque, NM during 2003. When creating a list of services to offer Albuquerque senior population Farmer looked at the business from the point of view of the consumer to offer a wide array of services. Farmer shared that both of her parents passed away 20 years ago and during the time that they were ill she was not living near them. Farmer said the time she had with her parents during their illnesses was not quality time. Their illnesses required Farmer to spend time calling doctors, emptying out the fridge, and being task driven while she was visiting with them. I wish I would have had a caregiver to communicate with long distance so my time, while I was with my parents, could have been spent by their side, said Farmer. Right at Home provides professional services with regard to a seniors Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as personal care assistance, medication reminders, errand transport, and meal preparation. We try to build a schedule around the client, said Farmer. We also actively recruit nursing students from UNM. I also assess for services that are beyond mine that will benefit the person. Farmer believes that socialization is also key to the quality of life for all seniors. A seniors world can diminish day by day as loved ones pass away and getting out of the house becomes harder, said Farmer. Right at Home specializes in offering companionship to all of their consumers.
