PROBLEM
Miningactivitiesgenerateliquidwaste containingheavymetalsandhigh concentrationsofsulphates.

SOLUTION
Astrategyforthetreatmentofthiswasteis theuseofbiologicalsystemswithsulphate reducingbacteria(SRB)andmetal accumulatingplants.

CONCLUSIONS
Alternativecarbonsourcecanbeusedbysulphate reducingbacteria Retentiontimeandsolidmatrixdidnotaffectsulphate reduction(3days) butthewaterheighthastobeconsidered Sulphate reductionefficiencyishigherinamoreanaerobicsystemfrom 14%(semianaerobic)upto90%(fullyanaerobic) Sulphate reductionismoreefficientwhenworkingwithisolatedconsortia CDOisacriticalparametertobeconsideredinthedesignandoperation ofapilotplant.
