Last Withdrawal Date: Course Description: This course provides a survey of fundamental biological principals for non-science majors. Emphasis is placed on basic chemistry, cell biology, metabolism, genetics, taxonomy, evolution, ecology, diversity and other related topics. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate increased knowledge and better understanding of biology as it applies to everyday life. Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of biology, including: 1) the basic concepts of chemistry, 2) cell organization and function, 3) genetics, 4) morphological differences and similarities among living organisms, 5) evolution of organisms, 6) ecological relationships among organisms. Core Competency: Central Piedmont Community College has adopted a set of core competencies that are expected of all graduates. Communication, Critical Thinking, Personal Growth & Responsibility, and Information Technology & Quantitative Literacy have been identified as skills needed to be successful in the workplace or to participate as an educated citizen. These competencies are demonstrated through the content of the discipline or program of study, and complement basic program knowledge and application. This course will address Critical Thinking. Evaluation/ Assessment/ Grading: Lecture grade= 2/3 of Biology grade Lab grade= 1/3 of Biology grade

Lecture: There will be four (4) exams given throughout the semester. Exams are all of equal weight. I do NOT give make up exams, however, if you know ahead of time that you will not be able to take a scheduled exam, please let me know and we will see if we can arrange for you to take the exam at

another time PRIOR to the scheduled exam. The exams will be given online in Blackboard. They will be open for four (4) days and close at 11pm on the last day. Lab: There will be 4 tests and a presentation final exam given throughout the semester. Tests are of equal weight. Lab tests will be taken online in Blackboard. There will be no make-up tests given. There will be written assignments that will become part of the lab grade. There will also be an optional test given at the end of the semester. This final test will replace the lowest (or missing) lab test grade (if you choose to take it). Attendance: Powerpoints, lecture and lab tests, and learning aids are located online in Blackboard. Students must check their CPCC email and the course site in Blackboard regularly. Regular class attendance is required to remain entitled to financial aid and Veterans Benefits. For this class, attendance will be assessed by regular participation in the class discussion forum also located in Blackboard. Faculty are required to report irregular attendance to the College which may result in benefits. Failure to attend class and/or withdrawal from class may impact your financial assistance. Additionally before withdrawing, consider whether this course is a prerequisite for another course; whether the course will be offered again in the future; whether withdrawing will delay plans to transfer graduation; or whether withdrawing will affect eligibility for honors designation, health insurance benefits, or other financial arrangements. When a student determines that he/she will be unable to complete courses in which he/she is currently enrolled, it is the students responsibility to initiate procedures leading to a formal withdrawal (W) in order to avoid a failing (F) grade.
