Homeostasis: Body Temperature

Grade Level/Subject Area: 12th Grade, Science, Human Anatomy and Physiology State or National Standards (GPS or CCGPS): SAP1. Students will analyze anatomical structures in relationship to their physiological functions. C. Explain the role of homeostasis and its mechanisms as these relate to the body as a whole and predict the consequences of the failure to maintain homeostasis. Essential Questions: What is Homeostasis? How does it affect body temperature? What happens if homeostasis is not maintained?

Lesson Objectives: Students will: Understand the process of homeostasis in the human body. Explain how positive and negative feedback influence homeostasis in the human body. Know that homeostasis is regulated by the nervous system and the hypothalamus. Be able to demonstrate an example of homeostasis in the human body.

Performance Objectives: Students will complete an activity with homeostasis where they control the homeostasis of a virtual human being and write a journal entry about their experiences. Students will also complete a project about the Negative Feedback System in a small group.

Technology Connections (Post related URLs): http://abreland.blogspot.com/2013/10/smartnotebook.html http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/tdc02.sci.life.reg.bodycontrol/body-control-center/ Materials: Smart board

Procedures: Whole Group: Have comprehensive class discussions

Small Group:

Complete a project about the negative feedback system by dividing it amongst themselves and tying it together.

Individual: Complete homework Class assignments Keep a journal.

Differentiation of Instruction: Activities will be broken down into smaller chunks for students with processing disorders. All instructions, informational material etc will be printed out, given to and gone over with each individual student that needs it. For students that have trouble writing they will be given the option of typing on a computer or using a talk to text software Assessment: Homework, Quizzes and tests will be given in order to assess the students understanding of the material Directions for the Assessment: All homework is due before or on the due date and directions will be given prior to it being handed out and even sent home with the students for continued support. A time will be allotted at the beginning of class in order to go over information then take a short quiz. On test days the students will be given as much time as they need to complete the test. Some tests may be given as take home tests. Differentiation of Assessment: Students will be taken to a different room where they can focus more easily. Each question and answer choice will also be read aloud. Tests will also be broken down into smaller chunks for easier understanding. Rubric:

Building A Structure : Negative Feedback system: Body temperature

Teacher Name: Ms. Breland

Student Name: CATEGORY Construction - Care Taken

________________________________________ 4 Great care taken in construction process so that the structure is neat, attractive and follows plans accurately. Appropriate materials were selected and creatively modified in ways that made them even better. 3 Constuction was careful and accurate for the most part, but 1-2 details could have been refined for a more attractive product. Appropriate materials were selected and there was an attempt at creative modification to make them even better. Plan is neat with clear measurements and labeling for most components. Explanations by all group members indicate a relatively accurate understanding of scientific principles underlying the construction and modifications. 2 Construction accurately followed the plans, but 3-4 details could have been refined for a more attractive product. Appropriate materials were selected. 1 Construction appears careless or haphazard. Many details need refinement for a strong or attractive product. Inappropriate materials were selected and contributed to a product that performed poorly.

Construction Materials

Plan

Plan is neat with clear measurements and labeling for all components. Explanations by all group members indicate a clear and accurate understanding of scientific principles underlying the construction and modifications.

Plan provides clear measurements and labeling for most components.

Scientific Knowledge

Explanations by most group members indicate relatively accurate understanding of scientific principles underlying the construction and modifications.

Plan does not show measurements clearly or is otherwise inadequately labeled. Explanations by several members of the group do not illustrate much understanding of scientific principles underlying the construction and modifications.
