Unit Lesson Plan Day 7 Essential Question/s What fossils have archeologists collected that support that Native Americans lived in Virginia? What are some contributions of American Indian culture on present-day life? How are American Indians of the past different from those of today? How is artwork produced by the Native Americans different from Artwork produced in todays society? NCSS THEME People Places and Environments VA Standards of learning History 2.2: The students will compare the lives and contributions of three American Indian cultures of the past and present, with emphasis on the Powhatan of the Easter Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo peoples of the Southwest. Living Systems 2.5: The student will investigate and understand that living things are part of a system. c) Habitats change over time due to many influences d) Fossils provide information about living systems that were on Earth years ago Fine Arts 2.13: The students will compare works of art, elements of architecture, and artifacts of other cultures with those of their culture. Health 2.5: The student will demonstrate ways to communicate consideration and respect for the health of individuals in the community. Objectives Students will be able to (SWBAT): SWBAT: Explain how Native American culture changed overtime due to their changing habitat SWBAT: Determine the contributions of Native American culture on present-day life. SWBAT: Analyze data recovered by archeologists to make inferences about Native American culture SWBAT: Compare Native American artwork with artwork from todays culture. Materials for Learning Activities 1. Investigations Journal 2. Chart paper 3. Markers 4. YouTube video 5. Visual aids o Modern art

o Native American art-students should be introduced to this all week o Contributions o Native American Reservations Procedures for Learning Activities (Language Arts Extension) Today this lesson will take place during two different blocks of time. In the Language Arts block we will be writing a letter to Archeologist Dan about our class findings and our conclusions about the Native American tribe basted on the fossils, artifacts and evidence. In our Social Studies block we will wrap up our social studies content for the Summative Assessment tomorrow. Language Arts Mini Lesson: 1. Have all of the students get their Investigation Journals 2. Have them talk to a neighbor and convince them why they think that the fossils belong to a certain tribe and what evidence they have 3. Through shared writing, construct a letter to Dan the Archeologist that explains the class findings. Social Studies Lesson Introduction1. Play YouTube video (on Weebly Site) About Native American Culture and how it has changed (3:03) Instructional Strategies- (Small group/ 2. Put a large piece of chart paper, with a different question on top of all 5 tables. a. Questions on top of the chart paper: i. What have Native Americans contributed to the world today? ii. How has life for the Native Americans changed since the settlers first came to American? iii. How have habitats changed over time, effecting Native Americans? iv. How is Native American artwork different from artwork today? v. How was Native American artwork affected by the resources that the Native Americans had? b. Put students into groups and assign them a marker color c. Have the students rotate to all 5 tables, answering the questions on the chart paper i. Everyone must take a turn writing ii. They must come to a conclusion about what to write together iii. They only have 3 minutes at every station d. After every group has answered all five questions, have students walk around and read what the other groups wrote 3. Bring the chart paper to the carpet and talk about each one. a. Have visual aid to help clarify the questions about artwork

For example: Have a picture of modern artwork and Native American artwork, talk about how artists today have more resources and how the artwork looks different (Naturalistic Intelligence: these learners learn best making connections relating to the natural world. This lesson provides a time line for students contrasting and explaining life for Native Americans during colonial times, in opposition to Native Americans today.) Assessment Collaborative Posters: Assess deeper thinking and connection forming about objective topics 2.2 and 2.5 and 2.13

This class is the day before the Summative Assessment: The purpose of this lesson was to make connections between all of the content areas and consolidate all of the ideas. If students need support in an area: offer to help them during lunch and hold a Lunch Bunch to meet the needs of the students who are not grasping the different concepts Differentiation o Language arts lessons can be differentiated through the use of shared, guided or independent writing of letters o This lesson gives students the opportunity to think deeply about topics and make connections between different materials. If necessary, the teacher can provide more visual aids to help students make connections. Accommodations: o Students who do not feel comfortable writing on the chart paper can draw on the chart paper or they can have another student scribe for them o Students can be given more time to answer the questions at the 5 stations o Students can choose three stations out of five to complete
