COMPREHENSIVE TUTORIAL PROGRAM ON TESTING OF NEW & IN SERVICE TRANSFORMER OIL AND LUBRICATING OILS
ABOUT THE TUTORIAL Power transformers are vital links in the power system network. These costly systems have to function for long periods without any problems. Any failure of these components will lead to serious consequential losses. Condition monitoring of these equipment is essential and important to have reliable power system network. Condition monitoring and condition assessment of the transformer can be done by monitoring the various properties of oils. Insulating oil having high heat transfer efficiency is used as coolant and insulating media in transformers and switchgears. The New Transformer oil before filling into a Transformer has to undergo stringent quality tests, as per IEC 60296 and IS: 335 Standard Specification. Critical and basic characteristics like Density, Kinematic Viscosity, Interfacial Tension, Flash point, Pour point, Breakdown voltage, Moisture Content, Dielectric dissipation factor, Specific resistance and long duration tests viz. Oxidation Stability, Ageing characteristics, Sulphur Content, PCA, PCBs etc. are need to be assessed. The in service transformer oils are being assessed as per IS1866, IEC 60422 and IEC 60599 Standards. The Dissolved gas analysis of in-service transformer oil helps in finding faults in transformers like Arcing, Sparking, Over-heating or burning of solid insulation in incipient stage itself. The Furan content in the Transformer oil helps in assessing the condition of solid insulation in the transformer. In modern rotating machines low fuel input, high energy throughput and high reliability are the basic guidelines. Intricate engines with close tolerances between moving parts has become possible due to the increased ability of the lubricants to meet these needs with the help of tailored package of additives. The functional Properties such as stability to oxidation and degradation, dispersion of the sludge deposits produced in the system, modification of friction in the system, providing fluid film under extreme loads, depression of pour point can be improved by special additives. Condition monitoring in terms of condition of lubricant, wear debrie analysis / elemental analysis can give information on the abnormal degradation, wear and tear, etc. to protect the machines and enhance their service life. This tutorial is organized in four modules mainly to give an elaborate coverage of IS 335, IEC 60296; IS: 1866, IEC 60422 & IEC 60599 and ASTM Standards of Transformer Oil and Lubricating oil to give maintenance engineers an in-depth understanding of maintenance of transformer, transformer oil and Lubricating Systems. The program consists of lectures by experts of CPRI. Programme Objective and methodology : Tutorial involves lectures by experienced faculty followed by discussion. Case studies will be discussed in addition to laboratory visit. The Five day program will be conducted as Four Independent Modules. Module I : Tutorial is focused on various properties of new insulating oil and aims to provide the theoretical and deciding parameters to use in transformers and other allied electrical equipment. At the end of this program the participant shall be able to understand: Procedures for the sampling of new insulating oil Define the parameters of new oil for the transformers. Standards and specifications applicable. Significance of various parameters specified for insulating oil. Module II : Tutorial is focused on various properties of in-service insulating oil and aims to provide significance of parameters that are practically measured on routine basis for Transformer condition monitoring and maintenance. At the end of this program the participant shall be able to understand: Procedures for the sampling of insulating oil Important parameters for monitoring the condition of oil for continued usage. Standards and specifications applicable. Significance of various parameters of insulating oil.

Module III : Tutorial is focused on various diagnostic properties of in-service insulating oil and aims to provide significance of parameters that practically measured on routine basis for Transformer condition monitoring and maintenance. At the end of this program the participant shall be able to understand: Procedures for the diagnostic monitoring of transformers Important parameters for monitoring the internal condition of transformer and transformer insulation Standards and specifications applicable. Significance of various diagnostic parameters like Dissolved Gas Analysis and Furan analysis. Module IV : Tutorial is focused on various parameters of lubricating in general and turbine oils in particular and aims at providing the basic evaluation parameters and their significance and condition monitoring. At the end of this program the participant shall be able to understand: Parameters of lubricating oil evaluation Additive formulation of lubricating oils Condition assessment aspects of lubricating oils Standards and specifications applicable. Significance of various diagnostic parameters to assess degradation products Lube oil reclamation and reuse Who May Attend Engineers of electrical background working in Electrical maintenance and substations.
