Sheet (1) Electromechanical Transient in SEPS (Equal Area Criterion)

Appreviations: EPS : Electrical power system. IB : Infinite bus. TSM: Transient stability margin. CA : Clearing angle. CCA: Critical clearing angle. TL : Transmission line. Simplified EPS:

1. Give the general formulation of the method of equal areas. 2. A generator is delivering 50% of power which it is capable of delivering through a TL to an IB. a fault occurs which increases the reactance between the generator and the IB to 400% of the value before fault. When the fault is isolated the maximum power which can be delivered is 75% of the original max. value. Determine the CCA for the conditions described. 3. For the system shown in Fig. 1, Calculate the CCA if a 3-ph S.C. occurs at the beginning of one of the TL. All parameters are given in p.u. as follows: T1 = T2 = T3 = T4 = 0.16; TL = 0.24; X1 = 0.28; X2 = 0.16

4. A simplified EPS is subjected to a 3-ph. Fault. Determine the fault CA maintaining a TSM of 110 %, also find the maximum value of the rotor angle in the process of oscillations. System power-angle characteristics are pure sinusoidal at all operating conditions. System capacities are 4, 1, and 3 p.u. at pre-fault. fault and post-fault conditions. Two p.u. power is transmitted to the IB in normal operating conditions. 5. A generator is delivering 0.25 of Pmax to an IB through a T.L. A fault occurs such that the reactance between the generator and the IB is increased to two times its pre-fault value. Find the maximum value of the rotor angle in the process of oscillations in the case of sustained fault. 6. A simplified EPS is subjected to a 2-ph S.C. at the beginning of one of the TL at instant to (5o = 30), during an interval t, at t 1 (1 = 52), the 2-ph S.C. developed to a 3-ph one, and then at instant t 2 (2 = 73), the faulty line is disconnected. If the maximum power that can be transmitted in prefault, fault and post-fault conditions are 2, 0.8 and 1.6 p.u. respectively. Check the system transient stability and calculate the TSM. All parameters are given in p.u. as follows: Xd`= 0.3; Tl = T2=0.14; TL = 0.5p.u. 7. For the simplified EPS of prob. (7), a shunt reactor of 0.211 p.u. is connected at the beginning of the TL. Determine the maximum swing of the rotor (o=30o). 8. For the simplified EPS of prob. (7), a 3-ph S.C. occurs at the middle of one of the TL at instant to (0 = 30). At instant t1 (1 = 60), the defective line is disconnected. Determine the maximum value of the rotor angle in the process of oscillation.
