Melissa Sommers, Jenna Locklear, & Jessica Kelley

Target Population We presented our community presentation to a group of about 8 of medical professionals in the ear, nose, and throat department in Huntsville specifically in Dr. Hagoods Otolaryngologist office Friday November 15Th at 8am. Although we were all skeptical to go and try to teach any type of experienced and intelligent doctors anything they didnt already know, we all agreed that this experience was one that we wont ever forget. We had a great time and ended up having wonderful conversation with the staff and the doctors through the department, I believed we all learned new things and made connections between our professions that we had never of had thought of before. Survey Needs Assessment Contact: Denise Sommers Conveniently, Melissas mother works at this office and said that a lot of the time dental issues are linked to many of the problems their patients have. This was the perfect scenario to educate others in the office about the link between oral hygiene and the ear, nose and throat. Plan Goal: This goal of this presentation was to advance the knowledge of the staff about the importance of the mouth to the rest of the head. Objective: Each cavity in the head has an effect of the others; to educate on the effects and how you can prevent issues of the ear, nose and throat by taking care of the mouth and that maintaining oral health is imperative to maintaining overall systemic health We passed out brochures (attached) we created highlighting our topics: sinusitis, bad breath, cavities, and myositis of the jaw. 1. Q4Do you suggest proper oral hygiene to improve the health of a patient?

Melissa started off by asking a pre-question. Each staff member raised their hand to respond. After gathering the data, she gave the introduction on the link between oral health and the systemic heath concentrated in the head then discussed sinusitis in conjunction with dental infections. Jenna asked the questions 2, 3 and 4. Jenna then spoke of Sinus drainage causing halitosis and mouth breathing due to sinusitis which later causes cavities. She ended her speech with preventative measures. Jessicas topic was Myositis of the jaw leading to bruxism and tips to help your patients. She concluded our presentation with the post questions 5 and re asked 2,3 and 4. Educational Aids We used the brochures we created as the educational aid. With individuals that were very educated, we decided that a visual in which they could see clear pictures, follow along, and reflect on later would best benefit them. The pamphlet also included the questions in accordance with the presentation. The questions were a great opener and ended up leading to the conversation between us and the medical professionals. The interaction made us feel as if they really had a good time and learned something through our presentation, while also teaching us a few things along the way. Evaluation In our opinion our presentation was interesting and to the point. Visual aids and lecture were our methods of choice. Oral surveys of Pre and Post questions were thought provoking and obtained audience interaction. At the end we repeated the questions and recorded any change of answers to obtain the results for our graph. Just as we imagined, it resulted in the professionals realizing the link between oral health. They admitted oral health is something they should recommend to every patient. If they notice lack of oral hygiene, it is their responsibility to keep the publics health in mind and recommend them to a dentist to prevent further damage on their oral health may later lead to health problems. After the presentation was over, we decided that it would have been easier to give them a survey on paper. This would have saved time and their attention span. However, it went better than any of us expected. We all agreed that it was a wonderful learning experience and we were grateful for this opportunity. We felt it helped us connect to other health care professions that we would not have spoken with otherwise. We were able to obtain knowledgeable information that will help us in our future as dental hygienists. We were blessed with this opportunity to present to professionals that were willing to listen and interact with us is such a positive way.
