Freshman Point Guard Leads Queens to Victory

The Grady Cole Center was the center of many festivities in the past weekend. Queens University of Charlotte chose this location to hold their homecoming basketball games. The Grady Cole center has been the center for home games for Queens since they began building their new gymnasium, the Levine center, which is scheduled to open in the fall semester of 2013. The Mens game was the peak of Queens Universities homecoming, the Royals had many other festivities during the weekend. A tailgate party hosted by Queens student government was going to be bigger than ever until Charlotte weather took a turn for the worse. Snow ripped through the Queens city all day and caused the tailgate to be much less than satisfactory than planned. But the mens game would prove more than enough to excite the campus and heat up the night. The game this weekend pitted the Queens University Royals against the Erskine College Flyers, the flyers entered the game with the better record of the two (14-8). The jump ball went to the Flyers but it was the Royals who would start out with a large run, widening the gap between the two teams. Erskine would not lie down so easily, however. Star player Corey Sorrell went 10 for 13 in field goal range, making it a race to the finish line for both teams. The game was a bit of a nail-biter. The Royals lost and gained the lead 3 times throughout the game. The Royals advantage over Erskine was senior power

forward Antonio Stabler and freshman point guard Joby Glymph. Combined, Glymph and Stabler went for 35 of the Royals 60 total points. Tre Mclean and Samuel Johnson went 100% from the field each. While only shooting 4 shots between the two of them, their offensive efficiency contributed to the win over the Flyers. Glymph had a standout night, setting a personal record of 19 points. Glymph also added 2 rebounds and 5 assists, with only 4 turnovers in 35 minutes. Stabler had an average game, scoring 16 points, 1 block, 1 steal and 9 rebounds. Along with Brandon Nichols, David Mason, Samuel Johnson and Tre Mclean, the Royals had a solid defensive and offensive effort that would give them the edge over Erskine in the long run. Erskine did not give up the game and kept the score tight throughout the entire night. At one point in the second half, the Royals led the Flyers by 13 points but the Flyers fought their way back with the help of star forward Corey Sorrell and guard Roderick Perkins. Along with his 10 out of 13 field goals, Sorrell had 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 turnovers in his 38 minutes of gameplay. Perkins, who played the entire 40 minutes of the game, contributed by going 6 for 13 from the field with 4 steals, 3 blocks, 1 assist and 4 boards. Mike Gabbard, Jake Haslam and Deshaun Hall went for a total of 21 points, 9 blocks and 2 steals by Hall. Sorrell, Perkins, Gabbard, Haslam and Hall all started and played the vast majority of the minutes. As the game came to a close, the Flyers were up by 2 and the Royals had possession of the ball. With 1:19 to play, Brandon Nichols shot from 3-point range and put the Royals up by 1. Little did the Royals know, this would be the last basket of the entire game. With the Royals up by one, Erskine pushed the ball down the court and Queens managed to deflect the ball out of bounds under Erskines goal. Senior post Samuel Johnson was placed in front of the ball for defense against Erskines inbound play. In what was either a complete mistake or perfect timing, the Erskine guard who inbounded the ball threw a pass just as Johnson hit the ground, rendering him unable to get a hand on the ball. With the added .8 seconds on the clock as a result of the referees decision, Erskine had just enough time to catch the ball and put it back. Erskines efforts to put the ball in the basket in this crucial time were thwarted by senior guard Brandon Nichols. Nichols swatted the ball away, which allowed the clock to start and the remaining .8 seconds to run off and ultimately gave the win to the Royals. Queens next game is away against Barton College, where the Royals will be fighting to even the score against the bulldogs who beat the Royals at Grady Cole earlier this year.
