A Word from the Pastor... A Word from the Pastor...

DECEMBER, 2013
Let me shine Seventh Annual
Votuur 11, Issur 12
We invite our neighbors to come to the
Lords table to join us in building up the
body of Christ.
MISSION STATEMENT:
Thank you, Anne Lamot. Profound in its simplicity, your new book
draws me into each of the three words of its title as an expression of
prayer: Help, Thanks, Wow. I have found myself repeatedly praying
those three words not simultaneously, but in the midst of the eve
rydayness of sickness and health, greetings and goodbyes, celebra
tions and stillness. Help. Thanks. Wow.
As we begin this new church year, we know there will be challenges,
sometimes overwhelming us, of times weighing us down. In these
times help is a good word to whisper or cry out or scream. It is amaz
ing to know that our Lord is only that one litle big word away
Help!
We know there will be times of joy and times of blessing. When such
times come your way, may thanks easily ow from your heart and
lips. Follow the example of our faith formation students and parents,
who are intentional about sharing a prayer of thanks at the end of
each day. Thanks! for each gif and grace and gratitude given and
received.
Finally, I hope every one of you will nd your breath taken away
with a surprising goodness that leads you into the spontaneous pray
er wow! Maybe your wow will be life changing, or maybe it
will be the wow of a passing moment that will forever imprint itself
on your minds eye.
May I share my latest prayerlled wow? It happened, in all plac
es, during a church meeting, at our annual meeting. Wow! I am
overwhelmed with joy and thanksgiving and count it a wonderful
gif to be your pastor.
Help. Thanks. Wow. A prety amazing way to pray.
In and through Christ, Pastor Steve

View from the Pew:

During the recent annual meeting, Pastor Steve mentioned a recent
exercise of being asked to list some things that Zion has going for it.
That prompted me to look around the room and reflect on the makeup of our
congregation.
In the 30-plus years that I've belonged to Zion, we have lost some amazing
people who have moved on to Heaven or some temporary earthly destination
outside of Utah. If there were such thing as a Lutheran Hall of Fame, many of
them would have been inducted into yet.
And yet, through a combination of newcomers in those 30 years and members
who arrived before me, Zion continues to be populated by remarkable people.
There's some risk in becoming too self-congratulatory, so I'll frame this as an
expression of thanks to people who give so much of themselves to make our
congregation what it is. There are continual reminders of the talent and
commitment of Zion's members, and sometimes we fail to give each other
enough credit for what happens in our midst. Zion indeed has a lot
going for it, in terms of location, facility, history, professional staffing
and the preschool. But it remains true that the church is the
membership, and the membership is the church.

**The Ruth Nelson Scholarship**

The Ruth Nelson Scholarship fund honors
the memory of a woman who served Zion for
many years as the wife of a pastor and as a con-
tributor to many of the congregations activities,
who had a great love for children. The fund is
used to support scholarships for deserving stu-
dents in our Let Me Shine Christian Playschool
and Preschool. Your contributions will help the
school to offer more scholarships and will be
greatly appreciated. Please place your offering
in one of the yellow envelopes in your pew and
mark it for Let Me Shine.

November was a busy month with Parent/
Teacher Conferences and the Scholastic
Book Fair. Let Me Shines fabulous
teachers worked hard as they met with
110 students parents and the book fair was also a great
success, earning our school over $1200.00 in new books!
The children love reading books in their classrooms
each week.
It was a joy to give thanks and worship with our
Let Me Shine families during our Thanksgiving Chapel
and Feast. Miss Genie did an amazing job leading the
children in song! We had almost 200 people in
attendance!
We thank all who participated in the Operation
Christmas Child service project this year. Let Me Shine
was able to donate 40 shoebox gifts!!! You have truly
blessed the lives of these children.
Dont forget enrollment for the 2014-2015
school year begins on January 6, 2014. Priority is given
to Zion members and families of currently enrolled
children. Enrollment opens to the general public on
February 3, 2014. Spaces fill up quickly so be sure to
get your application in on time!
May the good news of our Saviors birth fill your
hearts with joy this Christmas and the New Year.
Peace,
Miss Barb
