Andrew Thongsavath Mr. Newman English 101: Rhetoric 16 September 2013 Statement of Scope for Annotated Bibliography Workplace safety is often unregulated even though OSHA is required to regulate safety. Usually, if the safety is regulated, the workplaces are inconsistent with OSHAs regulations. To make matters worse, OSHA isnt even consistent with regulations in all regions. Because of inconsistencies in regulations, there will always be issues with workplace safety, which can be fixed by having regional OSHA departments adopt national guidelines for companies. This essay will explore inconsistencies with regulation in the workplace and with OSHA. I will begin the essay with facts showing that many industries are not regulated. Then, I will make note of injuries and how companies hide injuries. After that, I will introduce OSHA and shift to how it is supposed to affect the workplace positively. Further, I will discuss how OSHAs department guidelines vary based on region. To finish, I will detail how OSHA can unify its policies and ensure that all businesses follow its regulations. The selected bibliography includes sources that address common business safety practices and discrepancies with OSHA. The anonymous source describes that certain businesses actually make sure that their workers are safe. The Hygiene Fact Sheet just describes simple safety precautions that should be done by workplaces. Kim OConnell suggests businesses to carry out safety precautions to save money in fines, but most businesses dont follow this idea. Josh Kovner explains that there are discrepancies between regional OSHA departments. Bill Mah explains that health code violations often times go unnoticed by OSHA. Together, these sources give an in depth view of how business safety regulations operate in relation to OSHAs guidelines.
