Chelsea Derksen History Dueling Documents #4 Student Voices for a New America In this dueling documents there were

three separate documents presented. These documents were from three organizations of students. They are: Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), and the Students of Democratic Society (SDS). Each of these organizations addressed the topic of justice. In the SNCC statement of purpose was primarily focused on the fact that in order to have the actual possibility of justice, nonviolence is the key. They state the love is the motif of nonviolence and that is what binds man to man. They feel like through nonviolence everything in society changes and Justice for all overthrows injustice. They want to appeal to societys conscience and the moral nature of human existence. The YAF Sharon statement they state that the youth of America have responsibility to affirm certain truths. It is also the purpose of the government to protect the most important thing to America, which is their freedom. They stress that everything should be judged on the question of Does it serve the just interests of the United States. In the SDS Port Huron Statement document, their primary focus is on freedom and equality. They feel that these area some of the biggest problems in our society. They bring up examples of the Cold War and that the declaration of all men are created equal.. didnt

matter in the fact of Negro life for the South and some cities of the North. They want others to have a yearning and feel as if there is an alternative to the present world and society we live in today. Their focus is on promoting individuals to want to make a change and to yearn for a change. All of these organizations were very well put together. They all had very prominent points that I feel still applies today. I feel as if not one of these organizations has it right, but that all do. There are many different approaches to the topic of justice and many ways to approach it. Nonviolence is very important. If there isnt violence, then there is love. Everyone needs love and his is something that is very important for each individual. Love takes away the want and need for violence. Love brings people together and helps people feel more as one. I loved this document especially because it is focused on the love which will eventually bring our society together in a more cohesive way. Also, doing whats best for the United States is very important. Everyone in society will appreciate the government and world a whole lot more if they know that they are looking out for their best interest. Lastly, equality is a big issue, even today. There are still traces of racism and injustice towards others in this world we live in today. I feel like if individuals had the desire to make a change and the want to make things better, more things would get done. If we are all working together for the greater good, and for a clear purpose, that brings about a feeling of unity amongst the United States and makes us willing to do things not only for ourselves, but for the greater good of the population.
