Vocabulary
Grid map Transportation map Product map Anticipatory set/introduction: Introduction: Before the students and I read the section from the text, I will introduce the vocabulary from the section to them. I will ask them how their parents get to unknown places. I will then introduce the vocabulary to them grid map, travel map, and product map, and show examples of each type of map. Procedure: I will pass out three papers. 1 Grid Map- from the book 1 Transportation Map- from the book 1 Product Map- from the book

I will ask the students to find an item on each map. They will work with a partner to do each problem. I will choose a pair of students to give the answer and explain how they got their answer. This will be done for each map. Reading the section I will choose a popsicle stick with the students names on it to choose a reader. The students not reading will follow along in their books. Each student that gets chosen will choose if they want to read or pass. If they choose to read they will each read a paragraph. Grid Maps Students will read the paragraphs in this section. When they are done reading the section I will ask the students to work with their partner to find what square South Manitou Island is located in. Transportation Maps Students will read the paragraphs in this section. When they are done reading the section I will ask the students to work with their partner to figure out what form of transportation they would use to travel from Hart Plaza to the Old Federal Building in downtown Detroit, Mi. Product Maps Students will read the paragraphs in this section. When they are done reading the section I will ask the students to work with their partner to figure out which product comes form Traverse City, Mi. Wrap up: I will review the three types of maps and how to use each one. Closure: Students will answer three questions about each map from the three maps I handed out at the beginning of the lesson. They will do this individually. ASSESSMENT: 1. Group: Students oral responses in class discussion. 2. Individual: Students will complete nine questions at the end of the lesson. Accommodations: This class has numerous students in Title-1 reading. In our school we do RTI for reading groups. Here is where they have to read out loud. To prevent students from anxiety in whole class activities I let them choose whether they want to read or pass. Partner differentiated learning strategies are used to assist students in their understanding of the content. Students that dont find the material as challenging as other students are given the opportunity to teach their peers during partnered learning.

All students participate in Social Studies. There is a cognitively impaired student that has been paired up with a higher-level student. He does well with explaining concepts and directions to her.
