Agilent E6474A Wireless Network Optimization Platform for GSM and GPRS

Data Sheet

The Agilent Technologies E6474A Network Optimization Platform is a scalable, integrated, air interface measurement system. This system is used to support integration and maintenance of networks, obtaining comprehensive call performance and quantifying the end-users experience for both voice and data. The system includes extensive GSM and GPRS measurements as described in this document. Depending on the selected hardware options, the E6474A system can make measurements on E-GSM900, GSM850, DCS1800, PCS1900, dual-band GSM/PCS1900 or dual-band GSM/DCS networks. A PC interfaces to a maximum of four test mobile phones (or two phones for simultaneous data and trace measurements). System software controls the phones to make and record userselected GPRS and GSM measurements and phone messaging. GSM/GPRS measurements from Sagem's range of test mobiles and Motorola's T720i / T280i are supported on the E6474A platform. The Agilent GSM digital receiver or third-party scanner can be used in conjunction with the E6474A allowing correlation of RF measurements and phone measurements. A GPS receiver, which is integral to the Agilent receivers, may be used to obtain positioning information that is collated with the measurement results. The system can also be configured for use with a pen-tablet computer for indoor measurements without GPS. Logged data can be exported to mapping software for analysis.

About this document

This document gives detailed information on the features accessible on the E6474A GSM and GPRS drive test system and associated software and hardware options. Wireless data measurements are fundamental in the verification of the technologys end-to-end performance within a GPRS network; this capability is enabled through E6474A-700 and E6474A-710. Additional details are provided in the Agilent Wireless Data Measurement data sheet, literature number 5988-1507EN. System software The E6474A system software is a user-friendly Microsoft Windows-based application designed to reside on a laptop. It is scalable and provides flexible measurement capabilities. Through a selection of licensing options it is possible to configure the software to provide GSM and GPRS phone-based measurements, GSM receiver-based measurements and IP/application layer data measurements. With the multiple phone measurements license it is possible for the system to control up to four test mobile phones simultaneously (two for simultaneous data and trace). It is possible to expand your system at any time by adding software licenses or hardware to the base product. Multiple measurements can be made simultaneously. All the measurements can be displayed in real-time and logged to a database. Indoor measurement capability, without the need for GPS navigation, can be added by selecting the indoor measurements software license option. Refer to the E6474A Wireless Network Optimization Platform configuration guide, literature number 5988-2396EN, for detailed option information.

Data measurement

A significant number of the GPRS measurements shown in the above GPRS phone measurement section are only valid during data transactions. A method of supplying controlled uplink and downlink data to the GPRS mobile is therefore required. Agilent has developed integrated data sequencing and measurement applications which are available under E6474A-700 and -710 as outlined in the "Additional Options" section of this document. For detailed information on the data measurement capabilities, refer to the Agilent Wireless Data Measurement product overview, literature number 5980-2310E and the Agilent Wireless Data Measurement data sheet, literature number 5988-1507EN. The E6474A extracts, decodes and displays the messaging to and from the test mobile. The messages are presented in separate views: GSM Layer 2, GSM Layer 3 and GPRS RLC/MAC. The user has the ability to pause the decode stream and to expand to the next level of decode detail, including the message hex dumps and frame number. Filter control is also provided for Layer 3 messages. The decoded messages can be selected for textual export via the E6474A's export wizard. The three protocol logging views are further discussed below. GSM Layer 2 This view displays the Layer 2 messages as they occur. Individual messages can be decoded while a test is running or being played back by clicking the plus box next to the message. A Pause/Resume control is provided. Additional features are available via the Properties dialog tab, giving the user the ability to change the text font. GSM Layer 3 This view displays the Layer 3 messages as they occur. Individual messages can be decoded while a test is running or being played back by clicking the plus box next to the message. A Pause/Resume control is provided. Additional features are available via the Properties Dialog tab, giving the user the ability to change the text font and color-code of Layer 3 message types. A powerful message filtering capability is provided as well as a message notification feature, where the user can request up to five Layer 3 message types in pop-up views (message boxes) as they occur. Decoded Layer 3 messages can be exported enabling off-line analysis.

A Pause/Resume control is provided. Additional features are available via the Properties Dialog tab, giving the user the ability to change the text font.

GAIT Measurements

Software licenses E6474A-250 and -270 give access to three GAIT specific views: GAIT Signal view, GAIT Neighbors view and GAIT Layer 3. The parameters available in these views corespond to the GSM versions with additional information relating to GAIT State. They are designed to assist the user in the transition of TDMA to GSM.

GSM receiver measurements

The GSM receiver measurement function of the E6474A software is enabled by software E6474A-210, -220, -270 and -620. The receiver component of the E6474A system is capable of measuring E-GSM900, GSM-R, GSM850, DCS1800 and GSM1900 channels, depending on the receiver hardware connected. The measurements are independent of network parameter settings. The following views are available for the Agilent E645xx GSM receivers CW/Channel Power BCH Channel Analyzer Interference Analyzer Spectrum Analyzer

The controls listed below are available for each receiver measurement class: Measurement interval Time Distance Averaging Running Group Measurement interval defines the duration between measurements. This can be specified in terms of time (for example, execute a measurement every 200 milliseconds), or distance (for example, execute a measurement every 10 meters). Receiver measurements covered by each of the views are detailed below.

CW/Channel Power

The E6474A system can measure the peak power (CW power) at user-defined frequencies within a user-defined resolution bandwidth. The system can also measure the total power (channel power) within a user-defined bandwidth at a user-defined set of frequencies. Channel power differs from the CW power measurement in that the total power is integrated across the specified channel width. The user can define the frequencies to be measured in two different ways:

16

Frequency entry methods

List: Enter an arbitrary list of frequencies. Trace: Enter a start frequency, step size and count. The system measures at the start frequency, at the (start + step) frequency and lastly at the (start + (count - 1)*step) frequency. For example, if the start frequency is set to 900 MHz, the step size is set to 1 MHz, and the count is set to 4; then measurements are made at 900 MHz, 901 MHz, 902 MHz and 903 MHz. Frequencies can be specified in terms of frequency units or channel number. The CW/Channel Power view has four display modes: Channel Power Trace In this mode, the Channel Power bars are displayed according to the frequency/channel settings in the measurement controls. Channel Power List In this mode, the Channel Power bars are displayed according to the frequencies or channels in the user list in the measurement controls. CW Power Trace In this mode, the CW Power bars are displayed according to the frequency/channel settings in the measurement controls. CW Power List In this mode, the CW Power bars are displayed according to the frequencies or channels in the user list in the measurement controls. Measurement controls Resolution bandwidth (CW Power only) 8.36 kHz to 950 kHz in wideband mode 1.68 kHz to 190 kHz in narrowband mode Frequency Arbitrary list (list) Start / step / count (trace) Channel width (Channel Power only) IF bandwidth 1.25 MHz (wideband mode) 200 kHz (narrowband mode) E-GSM/GSM-R/GSM850 30 kHz to 35 MHz in wideband mode 5 kHz to 35 MHz in narrowband mode DCS1800 30 kHz to 75 MHz in wideband mode 5 kHz to 75 MHz in narrowband mode GSM1900 30 kHz to 60 MHz in wideband mode 5 kHz to 60 MHz in narrowband mode

17

BCH Channel Analyzer

The BCH Channel Analyzer view is used to display all of the channels in a selectable frequency range. The start and stop frequency are displayed and selectable. A user list scan capability and a measurement averaging capability are also available. The following measurements can be performed: All BCH Displays the full range of amplitude of all ARFCNs within the specified range. The system measures the power of all GSM channels in the user selected range. The results are displayed as a trace, with one point for each channel. If 20 or fewer channels are found in the range, they are displayed as a bar graph with amplitude versus frequency. Top N Displays the amplitude of N ARFCNs for an all BCH measurement, with the highest powers. The system measures all of the GSM channels in the user selected range and returns the N strongest GSM channels received, where N is a user-defined variable from 1 to 20. The results are displayed in a bar graph of amplitude versus frequency or a line graph of amplitude versus time. If a measured channel is a broadcast channel, the BSIC can be decoded. User list Returns power measurements from a user-defined list of frequencies or channels. There can be up to 40 ARFCN defined in the list. The user inputs or imports a list of up to 40 GSM channels to be measured. The measurements are displayed in a bar graph of amplitude versus frequency or a line graph of amplitude versus time. If a measured channel is a broadcast channel, the BSIC can be decoded. It is also possible to display the highest powers of the top N ARFCNs from this list.

The user list of frequencies can be imported from a text file. This allows regularly used sets of channels to be stored for quick loading into the application.

Interference Analyzer

The Interference Analyzer view measures the power of a serving channel and the upper and lower adjacent channels. Typically, the carrier frequency of the adjacent channel interference measurement is linked to the serving channel of the phone. When the phone is handed-off to a new channel, the adjacent channel interference measurement tunes to the new channel. The Interference Analyzer interference measurement can also be used independently from the phone. A user can define a specific channel to measure along with the associated upper and lower adjacent channels. Adjacent channel interference may arise from other cells/sectors in the network. Two independent adjacent channel interference measurements are provided in a single view. This is intended for two phone configurations. Each adjacent channel interference measurement can be linked to one of the phones.

An estimated BER is calculated based on the number of bit errors in the mid-amble of the synchronization burst.

19

Measurement types Adjacent channel measurement The E6474A can make adjacent channel interference measurements. For two user selectable channels, it can return the ratio in dB of the power in each channel to that in the immediately adjacent channels. The measurement can return either the peak power or average power over the eight time slots. Co-channel measurement For a single-user selectable broadcast channel, the E6474A can return the total power in the channel, primary carrier to interference ratio, fading and show a bar graph of symbol delay spread. It can also decode the BSIC of the primary and secondary signals in the channel.2 Measurement controls Measurement types Adjacent channel analysis (average or peak power) Co-channel analysis Co-channel carrier frequency Frequency Channel Adjacent channel carrier frequency (A and B) Frequency Channel Display controls Show value (bar graphs only) Power in dBm Measurement results Adjacent carrier (A) Ratio in dB of power in C / C+1 Ratio in dB of power in C / C-1 Adjacent carrier (B) Ratio in dB of power in C / C+1 Ratio in dB of power in C / C-1 Co-channel Measurement status: No error, No FCH, No SCH, bit errors Total power received in channel in dBm Primary power in dBm of strongest signal path Peak deviation fading in dB from primary power Ratio of primary power / interference in dB (C/I) Primary BSIC: provided C/I > 2 dB Secondary BSIC: provided 2 dB < C/I < 10 dB (typical) Symbol delay spread (multi-path) graph Power in dBm at +/- 1 to 6 symbols offsets

Ability to decode the secondary BSIC is dependent on the received signal characteristics at the instant the measurement is made. Performance is optimal while stationary and will degrade with speed. The primary BSIC and C/I are much less affected by vehicle speed.

Features common to the E6474A platform

View Management

There are a number of features that are common to the E6474A platform software and that are available in all technologies. These features include the ability to record and playback data sets, export the data to post-processing software packages, display parameters on time charts and route maps and define flexible alerts and alarms, based on user requirements. These features are detailed in this section: View management Cell naming Report generator Call Statistics view GPS Data recording and playback Data export Link editor Measurement Parameters view Custom view Alarms view Time charts Route map view A view management tool is available to enable a reduced number of views to be presented to the drive-test technician. Specific views can be selected or deselected for display. The phone-based measurements and receiver-based broadcast channel analyzer provide cell naming features. The cell naming features are dependent on the user providing a text file database with position and cell configuration information. Where the cell ID is known, for example in the phone serving cell measurement, this is used to correlate with the cell name in the database. Where no cell ID is known, for example in neighbor cell measurements or receiver based measurements, a "best guess" algorithm is implemented. This algorithm makes use of the geographic location, ARFCN and BSIC to attempt to determine which cell from the database is the best match. The format of the cell database is a text file with the following fields: Cell name Longitude Serving ARFCN TCH ARFCN Latitude Cell ID Azimuth A number of Cellsite database formats can be imported, including:- TXT, Agilent StationInfo files, ICS, AXF, BXF, CDB, MDB, HP

The E6474A system provides fast and easy report generation. The Report generator command is available at any time during logging, Live Update mode, or when replaying a data file. All of the active views are captured, and an HTML document is created that contains a screen capture of each active view. Each report includes a header section and a dialog box prompts the user to enter the header information listed below. Smart defaults and persistent information are used (marked *), so minimal text entry is required. There is no limit to the number of reports that can be generated. Header elements: Report title* User name Company Time* Date* Location* defaults to current GPS fix Comments user entered notes Call Statistics are displayed in the Call Stats view. The Call Stats view shows the call termination classifications and counts, and call progress messages. For a system with multiple phones, each device is represented by its own column. Technology (technology of the device) Label (shows device label) Total calls # of good calls # of blocked calls # of dropped calls # of no service calls (shows the total number of calls that could not be placed or completed due to the loss of network service.) # of no communication calls Progress (A message indicating the call progress is displayed in this field) The Agilent E6474A system has the ability to work with several types of GPS interfaces. The system is compatible with the communications protocols listed below. The physical interface is RS-232 with a DB9 connector. 26

Custom View

Custom view gives the user flexibility to create customized views by selecting parameters required and displaying them in a tabular format. Up to 40 parameters can be applied per view and multiple views can be created and saved for reuse. The Alarms view is used to configure alarms that are triggered by parameters received during a test that meet user-defined criteria. Parameters collected as integer values or messages, from connected phones, receivers or GPS navigation hardware, can be used to initiate alarms; these parameters are selected using the Measurement Parameter view. The user can choose any one or all of the following actions to occur on an alarm: A .WAV audio file can play A marker can be written to the database file, and displayed in the Route Map and Time Chart views A pop-up message box can be displayed Measurements can be paused or stopped Each alarm event is also tabulated on the Alarms view as it occurs. Fifty pictorial survey markers are available to depict alarm events within the Chart and Route Map views. Alarms require set-up prior to a database collection in order to enable survey markers during playback. The Alarms view enables the user to create simple or complex conditions to trigger an alarm. The following are examples of how an alarm can be generated: Monitor a single parameter for a single set of criteria. When the criteria are met, an alarm is generated. Monitor a single parameter and logically "AND" up to five sets of criteria. When all sets of criteria are met, an alarm is generated. Monitor several parameters, each with a single set of criteria. Each parameter can generate its own sound when the criteria are met. Monitor several parameters, each with multiple logically "ANDed" sets of criteria. Each parameter can generate its own sound when the criteria are met. Monitor a parameter that is collected as a text message and generate an alarm when the message changes. Configure multiple instances of the Alarms view. Use one for each device. Alarm configurations can be shared using export and import commands from the Alarms

Additional options

This section is designed to give a brief overview of relevant additional options. Please refer to the E6474A Wireless Network Optimization Platform configuration guide, literature number 5988-2396EN, for comprehensive configuration details. Data measurement software license, E6474A-700 The data measurement capability utilizes a client / server architecture, where the client is the test mobile and laptop combination and the server is a remote computer connected to an IP interface within the network. The data control and measurement user interface resides on the client laptop. The Agilent E6474A system is designed to allow a single server to support several clients. The data measurement sequence controller allows the user to construct flexible transmit and receive data geometries with programmable delays for both UDP and TCP mechanisms. Ping, Trace Route and multiple FTP and http transactions can also be included in the sequence. Full data measurement functionality on both transmit and receive paths (e.g., application throughput, IP throughput, IP bit error rate, data fragmentation and delay) will only be supported with the purchase of both E6474A-700 and -710. E6474A-700 can be used without the Agilent server software E6474A-710. This will enable the sequencing of access to public ftp and http sites enabling the measurement of total bytes downloaded, time to download, and data throughput at the application layer.

Software

30

Data measurement server software license, E6474A-710 The server is the target for the above data measurement option (E6474A-700). It calculates transmit path measurement results, as detailed above, and transmits them together with the requested data pages back to the mobile client for analysis and characterization. E6474A-710 requires the purchase of at least one data measurement software license (E6474A-700) and will support several option 700s. The E6474A-710 software resides on the server and, once installed, can operate unmanned. For detailed information on the data measurement capabilities, refer to the Agilent Wireless Data Measurement product overview, literature number 5980-2310E and the Agilent Wireless Data Measurement data sheet, literature number 5988-1507EN. Multiple phone control, E6474A-010 The Agilent E6474A-010, in addition to either the phone measurement license or the phone and receiver combination license, extends the system to support up to four test mobile phones simultaneously. Use of multiple phones can significantly improve optimization efficiency. Some applications of multiple phone configurations include: Simultaneously evaluate performance on multiple frequencies Execute origination, termination, and dropped call testing simultaneously Execute measurements on your network and competitive networks simultaneously Indoor measurement software license, option 030 Agilent E6474A-030 enables the system to operate using a touch tablet PC, without GPS, to make phone and receiver-based GSM wireless measurements inside of buildings. While walking through a building, waypoints are recorded on a floor plan of the building. Measurements are interpolated between waypoints. Indoor measurements require a BMP format floor plan or sketch of the building to be measured. An essential part of the indoor measurement system is a pen tablet computer, which allows the user to correlate measurements with positions on a floor plan. Refer to the E6474A Wireless Network Optimization Platform configuration guide, literature number 5988-2396EN. Indoor measurement features Autoscale Autopan Auto legend Ability to link phone or receiver measurements to plot Waypoints with interpolation Moveable waypoints The Analysis Reporter option is a simple-to-use report tool, which is integral to the E6474A platform.
