Questionnaire Analysis

My first question in my questionnaire was what age the person answering was. I restricted the age categories to 15-18 as these are the ages I had already decided for my film to be targeted towards. I asked this question so that I could see what my largest age group were. The responses from my questionnaire, when collected and analysed together showed that my largest age category was 16 years old. This was the largest category with 14 of the responses being from people age 16. The smallest age category was 15 years old. There was only one person who responded and was 15 years old. The other two categories, 17 and 18 years old, had a similar number of responses between each other. These responses tell me that my main focus when filming, thinking about all scenes, language, images and age appropriate acting, should be for the minimum age of 16. This has affected some of my original ideas and plans for my film as they now would not be age appropriate and therefore would not appeal to my main age category. This is because some plans would have been seen to be to baby like and childish. Whereas other ideas would have been too rude for this age category to see.

This is the second question from my questionnaire. I asked the question of how often people watch horror films because I wanted to make sure that I had an audience that would actually watch my genre of film, this being horror. Asking how often people who responded watched a horror film also indicated that there is knowledge of the horror genre. The responses I received from this question was that most people watch at least one horror film each month. This was the largest response with 10 people choosing this category. The second highest response to this question was the category Never. 7 people had chosen this category, however the overall number of people who do watch a horror film, without looking at how often they watch a horror film, is much higher when combined together than the number of people who do not watch a horror film ever. This means that from these responses, I will need to make sure my film is interesting enough for those who like to watch a lot of horror films as they will have enough knowledge to subconsciously compare it to others they have seen. This does not affect my filming much at all. This being because although some responded saying they never watch horror films, they still have a knowledge about horror. Also most people who answered do watch horror films which informs me that I will have an audience that would want to watch my film, due to it being a horror genre.

This third question from my questionnaire was asking what the audience expects to see when watching a horror film. This was a multiple choice question, this meant that the people responding could choose more than one answer. I asked this question so that I knew what would attract people into watching my film the most. This question showed that the category with the largest response was scary surprises. This category had 22 responses showing that this is what people expect to see most in a horror film. The second largest response was that people expect to see a murderer in a horror film. This will affect my final film as from these responses I know people already expect just from hearing that the film will be horror genre. This means that in my film I must include scary surprises and a murderer possible. However from now having this feedback, including scary surprises in my film will guarantee it appealing to people because this is what they expect to see.

The fourth question from my questionnaire is asking the audience who they would prefer the main character to be. I asked this question so that when I begin filming, I know who the audience is wanting to see the most, a male or female main character. This question was a simple two choices, tick one answer question. The results from this question was that more people would prefer the main character to be female rather than male. 18 out of the 33 people who answered my questionnaire had chosen female. This does have an effect on my final filming because it has decided for me who the main character needs to be in order to make my film more appealing to the audience. This means my main character needs to be female rather than male.

What characteristics would you expect the main character to have?

Curiousity, not a lot of logic or common sense, hidden past/background, some eccentric/unorthodox tastes... Usually though, I'd expect the main character to be an attractive American, high-pitched, whiny young girl who is scared and all too happy to seek someone to rescue her. Or she may go underneath some 'incredible character development' and man-up enough to find an excruciatingly simple/obvious solution to the problem. These are my expectations, not my preferences.

This was the first open question I put in my questionnaire. The question was asking the audience what characteristics they would expect to see from the main character. I asked this question because I wanted to know, when watching a horror film, what my audience expect to see from the character. This would also tell me how I can appeal my film to the audience a lot more if I include the characteristics that they suggested. The responses I got from this question was that the majority of the those who had responded had said they want the main character to be attractive and appealing to the eye, confident and outgoing in circumstances throughout the film as well as also showing nerves and fear. This has affected my final film as I need to make sure that the main character displays a mixture of these different characteristics in order to appeal to the audience more. If my main character does not show these different characteristics then it means my target audience will not be as interested in watching my film than if these characteristics were displayed.

This question is asking the audience how they expect to see characters to die in a horror film. I asked this question because I knew that some people when answering would have given their preferred choice of how characters die in a film and some would have said the option that they always see the most, whether it is their preferred choice or not. The results from this question was that most people said they would expect to see characters to die from a mysterious disappearance because 14 out of 33 people had responded with this category. The second category that had the most responses was slow torture. 11 people had chosen this category as how they would expect to see characters to die. There is a small difference between how many people wanted one category to the other. This impacts my final film as I should now try and aim to include both slow torture and mysterious disappearance into the death of a character. Even though mysterious disappearance was the most popular choice, there was only a small margin between the two. Combining both will mean I will please majority of those who had responded, improving the appeal to watch my horror film and having not one way of characters dying but two will create diversity. This is because characters dying the same way may become boring and unappealing.

This question from my questionnaire was seeing what weapons people, who watch horror films, expect to be used most within the film. I chose this question because I want to know, if I decide to include a weapon in my horror film, what people would expect to see and this also gives me an understanding of what type of horror films are appealed to the most. This is by seeing what kind of films had used that weapon the most and this will then tell me what sub-genre that horror film was. The responses I gathered from this question was that the majority of people who had responded had said they would expect to see a knife used most in a horror film. This had the largest response with 17 people choosing this category. This will have an effect on my final film because I now know that people will be less interested in watching my film if they see a gun rather than a knife and I know this from the response from the survey because 15 more people had chosen a knife over a gun. Using a knife may be seen as following all the other films that have a knife as the main weapon in the horror film, however it will mean I have an audience immediately interested in my film because they want to see a knife being used.

This question was asking about the setting of horror films. I had asked what setting would be scariest in a horror film. I asked this question so that I could see the most popular answer and how/ if I would be able to include it in my final film. Also why I asked this question was to the fact that having a slight idea of what setting people find scariest when watching a film, and being scared is what appeals to people, starting off with a setting that I know a majority of people already find scary will guarantee some people will want to watch it. The responses I got from this question was the category that people found scariest in a horror film was an abandoned town. 13 people had chosen this category which tells me that this is what people find scariest and what would be best if I want to gain a large audience that would want to watch my film. This does have an effect on my final filming because the category that was most popular might not fit into a psychological horror genre. This would mean I will have to either find a way that could display elements of an abandoned town or fit the genre into using an abandoned town.

What scares you the most and why?

Poltergeists, possession, psychological torture, loss of control etc. Also the idea of facing these scenarios alone.

This last question in my questionnaire was asking, in general, what people are scared of most. This question was not specifically about what scares people in horror films, but what scares them personally. I asked this question so that I could see what generally has a greater chance at scaring people and seeing if what is more likely to scare people can be included in my final film. The responses I got from this question was that a majority of people get scared by things that make them jump, did not expect to happen or what they had not spotted originally by themselves before it is revealed in a scarier way. This was said a few times by different people for this question. Other answers that were given was clowns and stuff being based on a true story. This will and wont affect my film because some answers, such as people being scared of clowns, will not fit into a psychological genre. Therefore I cannot use this because otherwise I will be losing track of the main genre of film, the story behind it and will not look professional. Other answers however, such as stuff that makes you jump, is helpful and also relevant to my final film because that is what a psychological horror aims to do mainly. Even though this is scary to people, it is what also appeals to them as well because they get a thrill when watching and that is what is appealing.
