Performance Task(s): Goal: Compare decimals to the thousandths place value using >, =, and < symbols. Students will write decimals in expanded form to compare decimals. Students will use Inspiration to show how to compare decimal numbers to the thousandths place value. Stage 3 Learning Plan


Learning Activities:
Engage The teacher will review place values with students by giving students numbers and having them create a number by standing in front of the classroom. Elicit - The teacher will state what numbers need to be in which place values and students will create the desired number. Explore Students will be given a place value chart. Students will work with a partner to create the numbers describe to them using place values. Students will use cubes to represent the numbers in each place value and write the expanded form of the decimals based on their representations. Students will complete Decimal Garden to practice writing the standard form of the decimal and the fraction representation of the decimal. Explain The teacher will discuss how using the expanded form and place values help the students compare decimals. Elaborate & Extend The teacher will give students two decimals and have the students use their place value charts to help them compare the decimals. Evaluate - Students will create an Inspiration concept map showing how to compare decimals to the thousandths place. Students will show how to compare the decimals to the thousandths place using place values and expanded form.
