Intro to Applied Animal Genetics

ANSC 1510 4 Credits Course Syllabus Spring 2014 MWF 10:00-11:20am Instructor: Tara Baxter Email: TLB237@cornell.edu Office Hours: Wednesdays 3:00-5:00pm or by individual appointment, T TAs: Jessica Shannon and Laura Hayward Email:JJS999@cornell.edu LMH4444@cornell.edu Office Hours: Jess-- Tuesdays: 10:00-12:00pm Laura--Fridays 1:00-3:00pm Course Description Farmers and ranchers are the true geneticists of the past, experimenting with genetics long before even Gregor Mendel knew that one gene controlled wrinkling in peas. This course will re-introduce you to the fundamental basics of Mendelian genetics and then will focus on the effects of selection on animal populations. We will also introduce a number of concepts in population genetics and quantitative genetics that are important in the animal industry as descriptive herd/breed statistics. This course uses two different genetic simulation tools so students can manage their own digital herds and experiment with genetics first hand. Additionally, we will cover modern molecular techniques that are currently in use for animal health and overall improvement. Learning Objectives At the completion of this course students will be able to: Describe the principles of basic Mendelian genetics and inheritance Predict the potential outcomes and likelihoods of a cross between two individuals of known genotypes Determine the genotype of an individual using parental pedigree information and/or using offspring/testcross information Use performance information to select appropriate individuals for breeding programs focused on a quantitative trait Attendance Policy As this course does not have a required reading component, attendance is mandatory. Students will be assessed in their attendance by answering poll questions with a mobile device (laptop, cell phone, tablet, etc.) Students may have up to three unexcused absences before they will begin to lose points for the course. There are a total of 40 attendance points, one per class. You begin with 3 attendance points already given to you to account for your absences. If you do not use some or all of your absences, you will get up to the additional 3 points in extra credit.

Make-up and Late Work Policies The exam for this class is administered during class and therefore NO makeups will be offered. No exceptions. There are no make up points available for students who have more than three unexcused absences. Projects and reports turned in late will be docked 10% of the total possible score per day late. Where to go for help Office hours are listed at the top of this syllabus. Please try to attend one of these three sessions first before scheduling an individual appointment. For help running COWGAMES, please see the User Manual: http://users.tamuk.edu/kfsdl00/usersmanual.htm For help running equine-ranch, please see the game Help Files: http://www.equine-ranch.com/voxknowledge/
For additional help beyond these resources you can get assistance at the Cornell Learning Strategies Center. Here you can learn more about study skills and habits that will help you succeed in your coursework here at Cornell. You may also request to schedule individual time with a tutor to work on different subjects. For this course, it is recommended you request a biology tutor. In future semesters, we hope to have an undergraduate tutor in place at the learning center available specifically for this course. For more information about the Learning Strategies Center, please visit their website: http://lsc.cornell.edu/index.html Students with Disabilities Requests for academic accommodations for students with disabilities are to be made to the professor within the first two weeks of class. All students must be registered with the Student Disability Services to verify their eligibility for these exceptions.
