Accessing your technique level: Clarinet Learning good tone and technique is ESSENTIAL for the music undergraduate.

One way to learn tone and technique thoroughly and quickly is to combine technique with warm-up. Choose 2 or 3 Warm-Up Options (listed in order of difficulty) every day. Follow Warm-Up with a focused practice on technique. Melody Smith Technique Level 1: Klose Scale Study Warm-Up Option 1: Do this weeks assigned major scales (around Circle of 4ths) ascending only, one octave, lowest on your instrument, fermata on top tonic; repeat as needed ( to correct mistakes or to memorize more completely). Wet all reeds and change every 6 scales or so, sorting as you go. Stretch your embouchure, neck, hands, spine and/or hips every time you stop. Warm-Up Option 2: Do same but 2 octaves. Wet all reeds and change every 6 scales or so, continue to sort. Stretch your embouchure, neck, hands, spine and/or hips every time you stop Warm-Up Option 3: Do this weeks assigned minor scales ascending and descending, one octave, lowest on your instrument, fermata on last tonic. Use Klose rhythm pattern. Continue to change & sort reeds and stretch as needed Warm-Up Option 4: Do this weeks assigned minor scales ascending and descending, two octaves, lowest on your instrument, fermata on last tonic. Use Klose rhythm pattern. Continue to change & sort reeds and stretch as needed Warm-Up Option 5: Do half of this weeks assigned major and minor scale pairs slowly with fermata on the last note. Technique Daily Intensive Routine: Map Metronome on one set each day Perfect Metronome Speed = Ability to do entire pattern, focusing on correct notes, good rhythm and tone - no increase in metronome speed if these factors are sacrificed Ability to play continuously (with sip breaths) 3 times through pattern

Keep a list of metronome speeds for each day. If you were unsuccessful, subtract 3 from your best speed.
