WHAT IS LEARNING
LEARNING IS AN ENDURING CHANGE IN BEHAVIOUR, OR IN THE CAPACITY TO BEHAVE IN A GIVEN FASHION, WHICH RESULTS FROM PRACTICE OR OTHER FORMS OF EXPERIENCE (Shuell, 1986)

WHAT IS LEARNING APPROACH/STYLE


Is a preference about how a person likes to learn.

Some people will prefer to have information presented to them as

a whole while others will want to detail


Some people will prefer to have information presented in text or speech while others would want pictures Some people will prefer to learn by doing

There is no right or wrong regarding the learning approach/style we have. Knowing your learning style may help you develop coping strategies to compensate for your weaknesses and capitalize on your strenghts

Peter Honey and Alan Momford have identified four learning style preferenceL Activist Reflector Theorist Pragmatis

ACTIVIST
Learn best when a. Involved in new experiences, problem and opportunities b. Working with others in team tasks c. Being thrown in the deep end with a difficult task d. Chairing meetings, leading discussions

ACTIVIST
Learn less when: a. A listening to lectures or long explanation b. Reading, writing or thinking on their owm c. Absorbing and understanding data d. Following precise instruction to the letter

REFLECTOR
Learnt best when: Observing individuals or group at work Reviewing what has happened and thinking about what they have learned Producing analyses and reports doing tasks with without tight deadlines

REFLECTORS
Learn less when: Acting as leader or role playing in front of others Doing things with no time to prepare Being thrown in at the deep end Being rushed or worried by deadlines

THEORIST
Learn best when: Put in complex situation where they have to use their skills and knowlegde They are instructured situations whit clear purpose They are offered interesting ideas or concepts even though they are not immediately relevant They have the chance to question and probe ideas

THEORIST
Learn less when: They have to participate ins situations which emphasise emotion and feelings The activity in unstructured or briefing is poor They have to do things whitout knowing the principles or concepts involved

PRAGMATISTS
Best learn when: There is a link between the topic and job They have the chance to try out techniques They are shown a model they can copy

PRAGMATISTS
Less learn when: There is no obvious or immediate benefit that they can recognise There is no practice or guideline on how to do it The event or learning is all theory
