Importance of Reliability. Business Performance Life Cycle Costs Repair & Maintenance Costs Warranty Costs Definition of Reliability: LIFE NORM Definition of Reliability How to measure Reliability? How to Model a Systems Reliability? What can Statistics do for this?

One of the major aspects of the customers perception of the products QUALITY is its: RELIABILITY

Life Cycle Costs. A huge part of the Product Life Cycle Costs are defined by the Repair Costs of the System. For Trucks and Cars a clear split-up in Preventive and Corrective Costs can be made. In general the Corrective part of the

costs is up to 60 or 70% of the total Repair and Maintenance Costs.

Repair and Maintenance Costs The Reliability of the Components and Systems Used in a Complex System can contribute to 50% of the total Repair and Maintenance Costs. The more repairs there can be expected, the more focus on Service-Ability is required.

Warranty Costs For a mature product (complex system) it might often show that the Warranty costs are not only due to

Process Flaws, but still for a major part a result of Design Failures. If no Quality process is implemented, this is usually the case. A sample distribution between Design and Process Failures is given in the figure beneath.

Definition of Reliability:

Reliability is the probability that an item will perform a required function under stated conditions for a stated period of time.

Within the definition all aspects have to be defined before measuring and analyzing the system Reliability is possible. The general interpretation of the words in the definition are described below. Item: Required Function: - Main System / Subsystem / Component. - Degree of functioning on main system level. - Determined by the level of functioning of the

sub-systems and the relation they have with the main system. Stated Conditions: Stated Period of Time: - To be defined in detail, like Users Patterns; Transport Classes, etc. - Standard System Service Life (Life Norm = LN).

Special attention is normally required for defining the Life Norm. This as it must be clear to all parties was the customer expectation of the Life of the Product will be. Instead of working with an average Life, in many cases the B(10) Life is defined as a reference point. This as this can be measured more simple and it is the Life that the customer will really "feel".

LIFE NORM An important issue is to make the designers clear that you have defined a QUALITY REFERENCE POINT by defining a Life Norm (LN). Normally the B(10) point of a System is defined the Life Norm
