` Potential by Paul Tarrance

It is a known fact that one of the greatest fears of students is writing. Years ago, I deemed writing useless and sometimes failed to complete assignments from my teacher on what type of writer I was. I would make up numerous ignorant excuses on how writing was inconsequential to life. Why should I write? I can just tell you or my hand writing is sloppy were things I would say to prevent me from writing papers I viewed as unnecessary at the time. I wasnt a strong writer for the simple fact that I didnt read. I loved to talk and as a child, I was able to hold conversations and express myself very well, but lacked the knowledge of transferring it to paper. Therefore, I despised writing. My feeling for writing was similar to the feeling of children who dreads eating their vegetables. However, when you grow older, you acquire a taste for them. You discover that they are vital and necessary for growth. As years progressed, I discovered that writing brings an unimaginable enjoyment and fulfillment to life. In elementary school, I didnt enjoy writing because I couldnt transfer my thoughts and feelings on paper in the proper way, my penmanship was horrible, and I found countless grammatical errors. These struggles made me push writing further away. As I flashback to elementary school days of story time, a chance to share with the class a story you created, I remember myself always being able to tell the best stories. However, when it was time to read the story from my own paper, it would always be dysfunctional. My nouns and pronouns were misplaced and my ideas were scattered all over, but my

teacher saw the potential of my writing. She always assisted me with correcting my paper, spelling a word, and encouraging me through words like, Paul your writing is improving. As I matured, my love for writing formed, consequently, because of a teachers encouragement and introduction to motivational writers. She would let us hear speeches like I Have a Dream by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., or poems like Our Deepest Fear by Maroniine Williamson. This form of writing influenced me. I was amazed by what their words could inspire people to do and how much I could identify with them. I was also astonished at how well they were able to communicate their emotions through paper and the way it flowed. Their pieces left the reader in no array or confusion. The readers of these great writers understood their message and it permanently remained in their minds and souls. Our deepest fear is not the we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measures are words that are glued to my memory, ingrained into my soul for eternity My teacher told us that the power of writing provokes change and thoughts when the piece is finished. That you should write what you feel, and what ever you want to say. Adjust the words into masterpieces. Since then, I developed a thirst for writing about my interests. Athunication is my aim in writing, giving my personal experience thro`ugh persuasive writings, reflections, and poems when given a choice. My writing has really improved since my adolescent years. I know how to express my ideas on paper, but I still have a tremendous amount of improving, as far as organization, grammar, and much more. One of the key elements of writing is to never tell what it is, but always tell what it represents. Ray Bradbury once said, You fail only

if you stop writing. I acknowledge myself as a writer with great potential and I am striving every day to surmount my limitations.
