PRE-REQUISITE: COEN 3153 (Principle of Comm) CREDIT UNITS: 3

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is an introduction to the basic concepts of electronic and data communications systems. Topics include data communication fundamentals; telephone and multiplex systems; digital communications. It also includes discussions on data transmission fundamentals; communication errors and correction; and several file transfer protocols, fundamentals of designing, implementing and using data communication networks particularly local area networks. Also, the OSI Reference model will be discuss in detailed. As a case study, appropriate software platform will be utilized to supplement and complement the different networking technologies discussed. VI. OBJECTIVES: of data

General Objective: To introduce the basic concepts communications to Computer Engineering students.

Specific Objectives: At the end of the course, the students should be able to: (a) discuss the concept and history of data communications. (b) define the components needed to establish communications and the options available in applying each component. (c) identify the fundamental terminology relating to general data communications and computer networks. (d) understand the different error-handling techniques. (e) know the different file transfer protocols. (f) identify and appreciate the different applications and types of computer communication networks. (g) Understand and describe the concept and functionality of each layer in the ISO reference model for open systems interconnection. (h) discuss some of the standard protocol suites that are based on the ISO protocols. (i) describe the different topologies and transmission media commonly used in wired local area networks. (j) discuss the alternative medium access control methods used in local area networks. (k) understand the current trend of data communications technology and standards.
