Rehabilitation is to rebuild the homes, reunite the community, and re-render the living
standards and habits. The universal definition of a slum is a heavily populated urban area
characterized by substandard housing and filth. Slums lack water, no sewage or solid waste
facilities, pollution, and shelter shortages, ventilation problems, nonetheless they establish
homes on unused land that is usually privately owned or government owned. The major
reason for the growth of slums is migration in search of employment from villages to
metropolis. The consequence is a more crowded metropolis where lack of employment, food
and shelter is worsened by heavy expenditure. Slums are a global problem, Over 300
million urban poor in the developing countries live in squalid, unsafe environments. UN
Habitat predicts that by 2030, one in every three people in the world could be living in a
slum. Let’s wake up to the crisis that our generation will face, and make a move today
before it’s too late for changes to be implemented. Metropolitan Mumbai has about 7.5
million slums. Indeed, about 60 percent of Mumbai's population lives in an estimated
37,000 slums. These are not just figures that are just to be quoted in discussions, articles
and thesis. This is reality of 7.5 million living people. rehabilitation or slum improvement as
it is also called is the provision of basic services, But fundamental is social and moral
training programs to improve the well-being of the community. As the government realizes
the situation, projects of MUTP under MMRDA come into the picture. The transport
problems are aggravated by the exiting slums, sprawling over the roads. Managing the
rehabilitation of this large number of slum residents and commercial block in slums
therefore becomes a critical part of most transport projects. The project today comprises of
the following three plans: (i) the rail transport - to capacity optimization and enhancement
of railway system (ii)road transport - development of Traffic Management, road widening
and (iii) slum Rehabilitation.
The objective of this design competition slum rehabilitation was to encourage innovative and
creative concepts in design and development of housing for the urban poor
This design exercise was to identify LIG housing scheme in a metropolitan area as proposed
by local authorities of the concerned area and formulate a project as per the guidelines and
norms proposed for that project. The scheme can either be new development or
reconstruction on the same site.
Location – any city
Mod e – proposed housing scheme for LIG by the development authority, municipal
corporation etc.

Infrast ructure –
social infrastructure: as per development plan and if possible as per beneficiaries socio
economic survey.
Operat ion and maintenance – role of ngos / private sector in community facilities
management.
La nd scaping – basic planting design considering economic and environmental value and
requirement of low maintenance.
Project costing – project financial model indicating different stakeholders i.e. Ngos,
private sector, central and state government and beneficiaries share and overall project
viability.

Market-congestion caused by existing market at 3 kms from the site at the city core.lack of
market spaces for the growing residential sector.
Canoly canal-mein sewage channel of city, untreated waste water and blockage due to
encroachment.
Mangroves-site adjacent eco sensitive zone, encroachment to the eco zone and as a part of
commercialization unawareness among public.
Slum-poor socio economic conditions, poor housing condition, poor hygienic condition,
water lodged area and adjacent to the canoly canal
Urban form is typically characterized by medium density development which uses zoning,
the provision of good public transit, emphasis on urban design and pedestrianization and
public spaces.
PRINCIPLES-
Appropriate technology
Efficiency
Balanced movement
Canal front development and boating facilities will be provided in order to connect the
various parts of the city using waterways which is a sustainable method of development of
commutation.
Ecological museum in the mangroves zone in order to conserve the eco sensitive
neighborhoods in a sustainable manner
Commercial street developed to gain advantage of the sustained public circulation that will
be generated due to the development of transit facilities like boating.
Multistoried car parking market provided to solve the problem of shortage of car parking
spaces and relocation of the present city area.
Community living promoted which will provide spaces for production residence selling or
marking living for the residence of slum.
ZO NING -
Canal Front Street-connects various hubs street pattern, serves as a interactive spaces.
Therefore imbibing the spirit of community living in each and every inhabitant.
It can be accessed both by the public as well as the inhabitants of the site.muultistory

MA TE RI AL S USE D FO R C ON ST RUC TIO N- depending upon the arrangement
of the different graphical forms of the vascular bundles in the product, an aesthetic image is
formed that contrasts with the inherent simplicity of the coconut palm. Coconut coir fibre is
the seed hair fibre obtained from the outer shell or husk of the coconut. In addition coconut
coir has low thermal conductivity. Using coconut coir cement board as a construction
component with low thermal conductivity will reduce heat transferees into the building
which decrease energy consumption of the building. The main parameter was investigated
namely mixture ratio coconut coir fibre, cement and water.

The basic advantage is that because bamboo is a light material the entire dead weight of the
building has reduced to almost 1/3 rd of the similar building constructed by conventional
RCC slab and masonry walls.
