IT 242 WEEK 4 VLAN

It 242 Week 4 Assignment: Vlan October 21, 2013

In this scenario, the first thing that I would recommend Is that you put some switches in so that you can route the people that are going through different hubs and routers directly to the router so that they

IT 242 WEEK 4 VLAN are not passing through multiple hubs. This would make their transmissions to the router much quicker and would reduce any lag that they may experience. The benefits of creating a VLAN are the fact that the users can access the private network through another hub. Only authorized computers can access the VLAN. This makes it so that the user can still go through another router; however their computer sends the data to the proper part of the network and keeps it very secure. No users outside the VLAN can communicate with anyone inside the VLAN. This eliminates problems with other users using the bandwidth in the VLAN and helps to keep the information contained to that network. I would recommend that the switches be set up properly, that they are configured properly so that they can all access the VLAN network and information can be passed. You should have the users that were moved upstairs connected through the router upstairs to access the network; they should be able to access the network by the VLAN through the router. The way to improve the security is to make sure that there is a strong password that is used on all the switches as they all have to have the same password to access the VLAN. Also Isolate the VLAN; you can even group users on the same physical segment. Administrators can control each port and control access to each port. The type of membership that I would choose would be the port address. The reason that I would choose this one over the rest is that it is much easier to install, and its very easy to manage option. In this scenario I would recommend a layer 2 switch because its much VLAN easier to install and does not have to go through the whole process of verifying everything. It would be much more efficient and would not cause problems with lag etc. The types of trunking that are needed is a VTP server will be needed to control all the information and it will allow you to create, add, and delete VLANs that are in the domain. Also you will need to have 2

IT 242 WEEK 4 VLAN VTP clients at least, one for each floor so that the VLAN is configured 3 right, this allows the computers to access the VLAN properly. If it is decided that information needs to stay within the VLAN for a segment, a Transparent can be included so that only computers on that individual VLAN can access certain information. The purpose of using the VLAN trunk protocol is to allow more than one VLAN to connect to the other. This allows the different VLANs to share information back and forth. The benefit is that other VLANs can access information and send information that is authorized. The VTP is a layer 2 messaging protocol that keeps the configuration information consistent throughout a common administration domain. It also manages the added, deleted, and name changes of VLANs across the different switches. It also helps to minimize the possibility of misconfigurations and configuration inconsistencies that may cause problems, like VLAN name duplication, or the wrong type of VLAN specified. As a backup, if the VLAN fails, all computers should have access to the network through the LAN as well so that if needed they can still send and receive information, should the VLAN fail. This will allow operations to continue while the VLAN is being troubleshooted.
