BANGKOK, 6 December 2013 (NNT) - Thailand has been in talks with many countries to sell rice in its stockpile, and the deal might be concluded within this year, according to the Ministry of Commerce According to the Commerce minister, Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisarn, Thailand has been in talks with the government of the Philippines and Indonesia, both of which will likely be concluded by the end of this year.Although the Thai government has as much as16 million tons of rice sitting in warehouses nationwide, only a small amount of rice need to be sold, Niwatthamrong said.Half of the stockpiled rice, or eight million tons, has been committed to other governments, while another five million tons are from the latest rice buying scheme, which requires farmers to send only rice to the government; rice bran and broken milled rice are excluded. Therefore, the real amount is much more lower than the registered figure.Meanwhile, foreign trade department's director-general Surasak Riangkreau said there was a high possibility that Thailand would sell rice to Indonesia because the country was in demand of as much as 600,000 tons of rice. Thailand is also in talks to sell 250,000 tons of rice to Iran.

Rice purchases will aid farmers, says buffer stock panel chairman
The government plans to support rice farmers by buying more than 100,000 tonnes of the staple in the coming weeks, the chairman of the buffer stock purchasing committee, U Chit Khine, told Mizzima on November 4.U Chit Khine welcomed indications that the government would increase the allocation to buy rice for the buffer stock.The amount provided by the government to subsidize the purchase of buffer stock rice in previous years was quite low, he said.But this year, both the government and the parliament have shown interest in buying more rice for the buffer stock.U Chit Khine said the rice would be bought in January and the price would be fixed at rates that were fair to farmers. Over 54 lakh MT paddy arrives in Haryana

Over 54.78 lakh metric tonnes of paddy has so far arrived in various mandis of Haryana during the current procurement season as compared to the arrival of over 52.01 lakh metric tonnes of paddy during the corresponding period last year.Stating this here on Friday, a spokesman of the Food and Supplies Department said that out of the total arrival, the government agencies have procured over 35.73 lakh metric tonnes of paddy and millers have purchased over 19.05 lakh metric tonnes of the produce. He said Food and Supplies Department has purchased over 14.45 lakh metric tonnes of paddy, HAFED over 10.20 lakh metric tonnes, Agro Industries Corporation over 5.84 lakh metric tonnes, Haryana Warehousing Corporation over 3.44 lakh metric tonnes, CONFED over 1.65 lakh metric tonnes and Food Corporation of India 13,157 metric tonnes of paddy.The spokesman said that district Karnal is leading in paddy arrival where over 9.70 lakh metric tonnes of paddy having arrived in the mandis, followed by Kurukshetra with over 9.43 lakh metric tonnes. Haryana rice mills seek relaxation in paddy damage norms

CHANDIGARH: Rice mills in Haryana are in a limbo as the Food Corporation of India (FCI) has not relaxed norms related to damage of milled rice procured by it from them. Resultantly, Haryanahas stopped supply of rice to the central pool from its 1,000-odd mills.Seeking relaxation on the damage percentage, Haryana rice mill owners are now approaching the state government to pursue their case with FCI. They claim that inclement weather has resulted in the damage of paddy crop. Haryana Rice millers Association (HRMA) said that faced a damage of 5 to 7% as against the FCI's norm of 3%. "This is not just the case in Haryana but other paddy growing states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab,Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh are also involved. FCI and the Centre should increase the damage percentage to 4.5% for the survival of farmer and the miller. We have also written to Union state minister for agriculture K V Thomas besides giving representations to Kurukshetra MP Navin Jindal and Sirsa MP Ashok Tanwar," said Rajender Aggarwal, HRMA president.

China still evaluating banned Syngenta GMO corn

China is still evaluating whether to approve the strain of genetically-modified corn that caused it to reject some U.S. imports in the last few weeks after its discovery in cargoes, a spokesman for the country's agriculture ministry said.The spokesman, Bi Meijia, said at a press briefing on Friday that the strain, Syngenta's insectresistant MIR162, was still being evaluated after U.S.-based Syngenta provided additional information about the product in November.Bi said that although Syngenta had applied for approval as early as 2010, the testing data for MIR162 was not yet complete.He did not give any timetable for when the corn may be approved.The strain is already shipped to Japan, South Korea, Russia and even the European Union, which is notoriously slow in approving GMO crop varieties.At the same briefing, agriculture minister Han Changfu said that China was committed to maintaining its 95 percent rate of self-sufficiency in grain, but would take greater advantage of international markets to guarantee supply.
